The CBB -> Cookies & Drabbles

#1: CBB Advent Calendar: December 1st Author: CBB Triumvirate PostPosted: Wed Dec 01, 2004 8:34 am

Good Morning!
Welcome to the CBB Advent Calendar. If you cast your poor dull minds back a few months you may (if you are lucky) remember we asked you for some suggestions for drabbles. Now we are asking you to stretch your little minds to guess the person, object (or place) and the phrase in each of the Advent Drabbles; one will be posted each day during December. Answers will be given on the correct thread - eventually!

Rosamund Lilley sat in the common room looking troubled. Her face had lengthened as she sat reading a long letter from home. At first she had half thought her mother was teasing her, then her appalled mind had hoped desperately that her mother was teasing her, but apparently it wasn’t so.

Joan Baker, coming in at that moment saw how troubled her erstwhile friend looked. Rather tentatively she approached the other girl and asked gruffly “Anything wrong?” She knew after her behaviour the previous term that Ros was unlikely to confide in her, but Ros looked so distraught that not even thick-skinned Joan could stand to leave her alone in her misery.

“Oh Joan,” began Ros, before choking up. With tears in her eyes, Ros sat staring at Joan, who felt completely helpless in the face of so much distress.
“Come on old thing, what’s the matter? You can tell me you know,” she added blushing furiously as she saw the doubt creep across Ros’s face.

“Oh Joan, I can’t tell you. I really can’t” sobbed out Rosamund, getting to her feet and dashing from the room. Joan sat back in amazement, her curiosity roused as to what on earth could have set calm steady Ros off like that.

Ros headed for the Splasheries, the one place she felt she could go with some hope of remaining free from discovery. She needed to think things through in order to come to terms with the news her mother had broken to her. The inner room, with it’s row of cubicles, had magically appeared in 1969, much to the relief of the girls, and the appearance had worked retrospectively, so that girls from all eras of the school had access to the necessary facilities.
She locked herself into one of the cubicles and sat down, taking out the letter again to read it through. The faint hope that the contents had changed since the first time she’d read it faded away. It was all to true and she would have to come to terms with it. If it had been her sister she would have been over the moon, but it wasn’t and that made all the difference.

Joan had stood in the Common Room staring at the door that has slammed behind Ros for a couple of minutes before she moved. Part of her was eaten up with curiosity, but the better part was truly concerned for Ros. Coming to a decision, she went in search of Len Maynard, knowing that she was friendly with Ros, and also had the gift of understanding others inherited from her mother. Having heard all that Joan had had to say, Len went searching for Ros. Since she didn’t want to be caught upstairs by Matey, for whom she had a healthy respect, she tried downstairs first and the obvious place was the Splasheries. At first she thought no one was there, for it didn’t occur to her that someone would lock themselves into a cubicle, and Ros had in any case lifted her feet off the floor so that they couldn’t be seen. She’d been caught that way when she had hidden herself away to read rather than join in the Saturday night dancing!
“Ros? Are you in here?” Len called, certain that she wasn’t, since she was not immediately visible. She walked around the outer room, looking behind the coats hanging there and finally decided to have a quick look in the inner room, where the cubicles stood in a row down one wall. All the doors were standing open except one, which was firmly closed. Len looked thoughtful and then dropped to her knees to look under the door. There was no sign of any feet, for Ros had lifted them up onto the seat, but Len was no convinced and tried the door. Finding it locked she nodded in satisfaction.
“Ros, why on earth didn’t you answer? You must have heard me calling. Come on out - it’s nearly time for Kaffee. A nice cup of milky coffee will do you the world of good and then we can try and sort things out. Joan said you were upset about something.”
Ros sighed the sigh of the sorely afflicted and lowered her feet to the floor. There was no help for it; when Len used that tone she was not going to give up, she knew that. Reluctantly Ros opened the door and came out.

Ros followed Len down the corridor towards the spiesaal. She sat at her place and accepted the food offered to her, sipping her coffee, but unable to make herself eat she crumbled the bread twists onto her plate. This would normally have brought nemesis down on her head, but Matey was absent that day, seeing to one of the maids who had a conveniently burnt hand, and the prefect in charge of the table was more interested in trying to learn her rep which she had written illicitly on her hand than in seeing that a silly middle ate her bread.
Len did not let up easily and Ros found that the younger girl dogged her footsteps till bedtime. It was with a sigh of relief that Ros dropped the curtains that night, and then lay on the bed and re read her mother’s letter by torchlight. She got away with this complete disregard of the rules because it was the norm, the dormy prefect was using her torch to read a film magazine, while Len was reading an article smuggled into school about how to clear her complexion. Len suffered rather badly from acne, and did not find that the clear mountain air or the fresh spring water made any difference.

As Ros lay there she could hear faintly from the next cubicle Sinatra crooning ‘3 coins in the fountain’ as Con listened to radio Luxemburg, muffling the sound by putting her head and the radio underneath her pillow. As Ros read it changed to Doris Day, then an advert, ‘Try muffs, not a sausage better’ Then Dicky Valentine came on. As ‘Mr Sandman’ started Ros slipped off the bed and padded through to Con’s cubicle.
“Shove over,” she said as she climbed into bed alongside Con and joined her under the pillow. Entranced in their dreams as they listened to their heart throb they lay there and giggled. Ros forgot the letter from her mother until she found it on the floor the following morning and tossed it into the bin. After all when you could listen to Dicky Valentine what did it matter who got to help dad pick the spuds.

Idea remembering the first big Gather ...

Ros Lilley
The Splasheries
"A nice cup of milky coffee will do you the world of good and then we can try and sort things out."

Is that the sort of thing you mean? And the correct guesses will be revealed at the end?

from the team who brought you Sybil Russell, Plas Howell and the baseball bat

I seem to remember the thread where we had to make suggestions was for a person, an object and a phrase.

Looks like it has as much, or as little to do with advent as the ones Rachel and I wrote did!

I recall the thread, it was in Inspire and Challenge asking for a person, an object and a phrase, looks like they have been written into styories and we have to work out, should be easy for those people who made the original suggestions, I seem to remember I put Peggy Bettany and a silver bullet, can't remember the phrase I used though.

Here's my guess for this one
Len Maynard,
bread twists
complete disregard for the rules.

You can have as many guesses as you like.

Three of us have each written part of each drabble, and each part contains one of the three things (person, object and phrase). You seem to have got the idea, but no one has got it right yet!

There will be another drabble tomorrow, if you liked this one that is. We will be counting down to Christmas as Carolyn and Rachel did last year.

The answers to this one is :

Joan Baker
A cup of milky coffee
'Not a sausage'

and as to why Ros was upset...well who knows, this is fcs, and considering what has been written for some of the other suggestions all I can say is 'hold onto your hats folks!'.

Tempting as it is to see if we can go all the way to 'four hundreds that' we will give in now and say, yes, at some point in the dim and distant future we will reveal who we are. Possibly!
