Mihiri awoke suddenly from her peaceful slumbers to the sound of the rising bell clanging in her ears. Though she had been at the Chalet School for nearly a term now, it was a noise no girl ever really liked to hear. However, today as she clambered out of bed, squeaks of delight could be heard emitting from the two cubicles that had windows in the dormitory and Vi Lucy's voice carried to the furthest corners of the room.
'It's snowing' she exclaimed, 'really ever so hard, and isn't it glorious!!'
The pronouncement set the dormitory alight and it seemed everyone was talking at once about when they would be able to first go out and more importantly when winter sporting would begin. Emerence Hope, chancing her luck, was caught trying to make for one of the window cubicles and was promptly soundly squashed by her dormitory prefect Clem Barrass, who then turned on the occupants reminding them to keep the noise down, otherwise Matey would be upon them! This had the effect of subduing the girls long enough for them to finish their dormitory work, before they fled to their common room to see the sight and give rein to their tongues again. There was a good reason for their excitement. This was the schools first term in Switzerland and very few of the girls had ever seen snow quite like this!

After prayers, the headmistress, Miss Annersley, informed the school that winter sports would begin as soon as there was a clear day and the ground had frozen. Unfortunately for the girls, this did not happen for three days but then, at last, they awoke to wonderful glittering landscape, under a pale winter sun. Very shortly a stream of excited girls could be seen making their way from the school to the meadowland behind the Elisehütte, where they would practice their skiing. Like many of the girls Mihiri had never learnt to ski and she watched Mddle de Lachennais skim across the snow with awe. However, she was not given much time to stand around and watch, and she was grabbed by Josette Russell, with whom she was developing a growing friendship, and pulled over to a quieter spot.

'Come on Mihiri' she said with a grin, 'I spent two winters in Canada with snow like this, so I can ski a decent amount, I can give you a hand in getting your balance.' She set Mihiri off and surveyed her attempts with a critical eye.
'Try to keep your legs apart to keep the points of your skis from crossing' she shouted.
'Whaaatt...' Mihiri, her concentration disturbed looked up at Josette and consequently met her doom and the soft snow.
Josette had her back on her feet in seconds and, after about another fifteen minutes, Mihiri found that she could cover a short distance fairly easily.
In the mean time Josette had been chased off to warm up by the Head Girl, Julie Lucy, who then came and spent some of her time in helping Mihiri, leaving that young lady to realise just how decent the prefects were at this school.

A short while later Miss Burnett, the games mistress, blew her whistle and, to the girls’ glee, as they gather around her, announced there would now be a snow fight. The next few minutes were fully occupied in picking up sides and choosing the location of the 'fort'. Mihiri found herself on the same team as the members of the 'gang' and she and Josette had the responsibility of guarding a spot between two snow-covered bushes.
'I’ve been dying to have a real snow fight at school' Josette proclaimed, as they made their snowballs. 'Auntie Joey has told me all about the ones they had when she was at school in the Tyrol and they sounded fabulous!'
What Mihiri might have replied was lost forever as at that moment the fight commenced and the girls became lost in the excitement as snowballs where hurled and tossed in all directions.

Mihiri came perilously close to being captured at one point and was only saved by Josette. That young lady had seen the trouble and had wildly yanked Mihiri back before Katharine Gordon could take her chance. So the fun continued. The defenders of the fort lost members but also gathered a fair few prisoners and were doing good work in defending their ground, largely in part due to Mary-Lou, who had taken command of the operation from the beginning and no one dared to anything but obey!!

Mihiri was enjoying herself immensely, she was covered in snow from the hits she had taken but was also throwing for all she was worth. Suddenly, from the right, she heard her name called and, without thinking or looking, she picked up two snowballs and threw them in that direction with a sure aim, that saw them land directly in the face of her opponent, who turned out to be none other than Miss Annersley herself!

Mihiri stood frozen still with horror as she looked on at the sight, and some of the girls nearby who had seen the event, also stopped and looked on with interest. Miss Annersley stood still and silent for what seemed to Mihiri to be hours. Then she gave Mihiri as particular look with glimmering blue eyes surveying her from head to toe, that made that young lady turn a bright shade of scarlet. The heat of her face melted the remains of the snow, sending them slithering off the end of her nose to fall to the ground.
'I-I'mmmm s-sooorry,' she mumbled.

The silence reigned again until Miss Annersley decided to speak.
'Well Mihiri,’ she said with a quiet severity that made the girl shake in her shoes. I hope this will teach you to look and think before you throw in future.' Then she added. 'If you do, I see no reason why you cannot make an excellent member of the cricket team this summer.

With this she turned, leaving Mihiri to realise that it wasn't just the prefects who were decent in this school!! As for Miss Annersley, she was dying to laugh but this was something she was unable to do until later that evening as she retold the tale to Joey Maynard and a few select members of staff in the comfort of her own private sitting room.

Fantastic!

I am so in awe of these CS teachers who can keep their laughter in until they reach the privacy of the staffroom! Why can I not do this when my children do absurd things that need disciplining? More often than not I just dissolve into giggles, and that is the end of any sort of lecture...
