Claire O’shea was recovering from a day of name tagging and trying-ons she sat down and began to practice her cello but she couldn’t settle to it she was far to excited, she was of to boarding school, it had taken months of coxing but finally her parents were persuaded that her governess of 6 years, Ms Bradley, had been outgrown and it was time for Claire to move on to a larger establishment where she could get connexions, she could there achieve her goal, to become a neurosurgeon. And so at the end of the summer Claire would be off to The Austrian Tyrol to the chalet school, she would be leaving the small village near cork tomorrow and meeting the escort mistress, Miss Wilby, at Victoria station on Friday, arriving at the school on Sunday, for the start of term on Tuesday.

The train whistled into Victoria station, Claire who was dressed in her new uniform of a brown gymslip and straw hat, waited nervously on the platform for Miss Wilby, who had been holidaying in Oban with her sister and was now returning to her place, as biology mistress, at the school. She had volunteered to collect Claire from the station and take her to school.
She knew little of the small Irish girl, but all reports of her seemed good and she was looking forward to meeting and talking with her. Miss Wilby placed down her book as the train slowed down and glanced out the window, as the smoke cleared she saw her new pupil, there was no doubt about it, Miss Betany had said that, at their last meeting Claire was small, thin and had the most startlingly beautiful red hair, in her comparatively short time teaching at the school she had grown accustomed to the girls in their uniform but to see this tiny girl in it seemed strange somehow. Putting these thoughts aside she gathered her belongings and disembarked form the train to meet the new girl.

Miss Wilby was relieved to find that Claire was a sensible child, who, after promising to write many times, was released by her mother, they boarded the train which would take them off to Austria. Although Claire was excited about going away she couldn’t help feeling lost and alone as she saw her mother and her sheltered life with Ms Bradley disappear into the distance, as the new exciting Austrian life was about to begin

The journey to Dover was fairly uneventful as both of them slept for most of it but when they boarded the ferry they got up to stretch their legs and watch the white cliffs disappear into the dark fog, then in almost no time at all they were docking at Calais and on another train heading for Paris, where they spent the night in a small hostel. After a refreshing night’s sleep they awoke and spent an enjoyable Saturday touring Paris and visiting The Arc de Triomphe and the famous Notre-Dame cathedral then they boarded the overnight train to take them over the border and eventually to Innsbruck.
Claire awoke with a start, the jolting movement of the train had changed as it slowed down, she looked out the window and a site, so different from the old buildings of Paris and the small thatched cottages of her Irish village as to have been on a different planet, met her eyes. She could see forests, lakes, mountains capped with snow sticking their heads into the clouds, grassy plains scattered with colourful clumps of alpine flowers and in the distance a town was growing closer

After collecting their possessions, including Claire’s cello that towered over her, they made their way out of the station and through the beautiful town, stopping to have their hair washed and cut before ascending the mountain railway. They arrived in the mountain valley and Claire O’shea received her first view of the school at the chalet.

“Simone! Simone!” Joey Betany came charging through the blue dormitory where Simone was enjoying a final lie-in before the start of term,
“Simone, get up Miss Wilby’s back!” Simone groaned realising that she would have to get up. She sat up and pulled her dressing gown on Joey marched into the cubicle and extracted her friend’s duvet and attempted to fling it over the balcony, luckily she tripped and tangled herself up in it before they both flew gracefully into the floor, Joey picked herself up and hung the duvet over the balcony more carefully before returning to Simone.
“So what’s the commotion?” yawned Simone.
“I told you, Miss Wilby’s back with a new girl, Madge says she’s just our age. She knew he mother back in England” Simone looked downcast and fingered her short black hair,
“Don’t worry old thing,” said Joey quickly cottoning on, “I’ll still be your chum, I’m allowed more chums than just you. Anyway, my sister says get up and come and meet Claire, she’s a darling you’ll simply love her!”

#13:  Author: CharlotteLocation: Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale PostPosted: Sun May 30, 2004 12:55 pm

Simone put on her uniform and raced downstairs after Joey she was in such a rush that she ran straight into a small, red headed girl waiting nervously in the hall.
“ Oh sorry, are you alright? I suppose Madame has sent you up from “la petit chalet”? Why? Does she need some help?” Simone babbled, annoyed that Joey got to meet Claire while she was looking after the Babies.
“Actually,” the girl started irritably ”My name’s Claire O’shea, I’ve just come over with Miss Wilby.”
“Oh!” exclaimed Simone, “ I didn’t realise, I thought… But you’re so small!” This was clearly the wrong thing to say, Claire turned, fixed her with an icy glare and stormed off. Simone looked after her; she hadn’t meant to upset her. She walked off to the lake.
Joey saw her friend disappearing down the hill, she stared wonderingly.
“ Where’s she off to?”
“Who dear?” replied Miss Wilby?
“Simone. I’m off to see what’s up with her, I thought she was going to look after Claire with me!”
“ Well, take Claire with you, remember, she’s new so doesn’t know anyone yet!!”

ok so i've finaly got some more!!

Joey trotted off to her dorm and found Claire unpacking into her cubicle.
“Come on, let’s go down to the lake, have you seen it up close yet?” she seized Claire’s hand and led her off to the lakeside.
“Simone! Simone! Where are you? Simone come on, you’ve got to meet Claire!” Simone emerged tear stained from the trees lining the shore.
“Simone! Simone, What’s wrong? Joey ran over to her friend and tried to console her. Simone caught sight of Joey’s companion and grew silent
“Nothing, no I was just, nothing.”
Joey looked between Claire and Simone,
“Do you two know each other?”
“ No,” Said Simone Quickly ”Hello Claire,” she intoned in an expressionless voice, “it’s nice to have you here.”
Joey looked shocked, why was her friend behaving in this way towards a new girl? She linked arms with both girls keeping up a strained conversation, for, although both girls were happy enough to talk to Joey not one word passed between them. They walked around the lake, Joey listening to Claire’s account of the journey from Ireland, once or twice Simone made loud remarks, trying to gain Joey’s attention but one look from Claire silenced her at once, Joey was stunned how could such a small girl command such power over a child such as Simone? She made her mind up to ask both girls about this to determine the truth.

After Mittagessen Joey traipsed up to her sister’s room and knocked to announce her presence before entering and sinking into a chair, Madge entered and, catching sight of Joey, smiled.
“ Have you made friends with Claire? Remember we used to know her mother, back in England?”
“Yes,” said Joey quietly, “I remember, although I was quite small, wasn’t she marred the Vicar?”
“Yes, I believe you’re right, what a marvel you are, you were only eight when they left for Ireland, she never said she had a daughter, I suppose we didn’t know her well.”
“Did Simone know her before she came here?” Joey looked expectantly at her sister, who shook her head.
“Simone? No, I don’t think so, Mademoiselle said she’d never heard of the child and she’s awfully close to her cousin. Why do you ask?”
“It’s just that,” all Joey’s concerns that Simone was afraid of the new girl poured out, “and, you see, I can’t have it like this, Simone might do something drastic again, but I can’t ignore Claire, she’s new.”
“Yes I can see what you mean, have you tried asking Simone what’s wrong?”
“When I talked to her she wailed hysterically that I didn’t like her.”
“Do you think she imagines that she’s being replaced by Claire?”
“I thought that at first,” responded Joey “but, Simone, she seems to be scared, as if Claire controls her.”

#37:  Author: CharlotteLocation: Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale PostPosted: Tue Jun 01, 2004 5:37 pm

The next day Claire settled into her new life at the chalet, she attached herself to Joey, Simone was left to tag along jealously.
“Come and meet the steamer with me!” Joey pulled Claire and Simone off to the landing to meet the pupils, arriving at the school, off the steamer.
“Hey there’s Bernhilda, Wanda and all the others,”
“Don’t they look jolly in their uniforms,” injected Claire, “Just the part for English school girls,”
“Joey!” exclaimed Evadne Lewis arriving at their side. ”Who’s your new friend, isn’t she adorable!” Claire glowed, basking in the admiration of the girls as they crowded over
“Hi there! I’m Erica.” Introduced a tall, striking girl “I’m Evadne’s cousin, you must be Joey,” she said to the owner of that name, ”Evadne’s told me so much about you, I’ll be in your form I think. Now, Is there anything to eat around here?”

#38:  Author: CharlotteLocation: Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale PostPosted: Tue Jun 01, 2004 8:11 pm

After the girls had drank and eaten their fill, the new girls went to meet Miss Bettany, whilst the old hands unpacked and caught up on the holiday news.
“I didn’t know your cousin was coming, Evadne.” Grizel said, “no one told us.”
“She wasn’t meant to be coming until next term at least, but then over the summer she met this boy, Andrew, She sneaked out to see him all holiday. “ by now no one was unpacking, they were listening to Evadne’s tale, “but one night Uncle James, her father, caught them together and forbade her to see him again he said that boys like that mean trouble and wrote to Miss Bettany straight away to ask if Erica could come here straight away.”
“Oh! How romantic,” put in Margia, ” Lovers sent apart by her evil tyrant of a father, it’s just like a novel!”
“ I say, that’s a bit harsh, you can’t say Erica’s Father is a cruel tyrant, you’ve never met him and it’s not polite, you wouldn’t like people to say such things about your father no matter what he’d done to you!”
Evadne flashed a smile at Joey, “No, you’re right Joey, it is ever so impolite, but uncle James is very strict,”
“I’m sure Erica was responsible enough to look after herself.”
“ I think he was acting for the best.”
The girls were about to fly into an argument when Claire and Erica entered talking animatedly; everyone was silent and looked at the incomers. There was an awkward pause. Erica looked around. “So,” she said, “who’s going to help me unpack?” Margia immediately ran over to help. Claire sat on Joey’s bed and waited patiently, listening to the conversation, for the conversation to stop and people to notice her.

“Are you unpacked yet?” inquired Joey aware of the silence. “We’ve been here for days so I’ll help you with your things!” This statement, although not directed at anyone in particular was greeted by many people wanting to take her up on her offer eventually when all the girls were unpacked and the dorm was looking less chaotic the talking ceased again and the girls turned to look at Claire still sitting on the bed, the sun was shining through the window behind her and the light seemed to make her hair glitter,
“So, Claire, Why did you come here?” asked Grizel.
“ Oh,” said Claire with a sigh, “ my governess couldn’t take my schooling far enough to meet the requirements for my desired profession,”
“And what was that?” demanded Grizel. Claire turned, making sure the whole room were listening,
“To be a neurosurgeon,” a couple of the older girls looked startled, the younger ones seemed impressed.
Claire sauntered to Joey’s side, “ Come on Jo, lets go to the music room, I need to practice my cello, and you can listen!” Joey allowed herself to be steered from the room. The others stared after them in amazement; this new girl had taken control over Joey, and was telling her what to do. What was going on?

Ok! here goes!
The first day of term passed without to many mishaps and the staff were happy with the way all the new girls were settling in
“Although Simone’s behaviour seems bizarre.” Voiced Miss Wilby, ”She seems to have become surly and quiet.”
“ You surely don’t mean my Simone, Elspeth!” Cried Mademoiselle, “She would never!” Miss Wilby looked to Madge who gave her a look that all to plainly said, don’t argue. So she contented herself by sighing, and pronouncing that she must be mistaken, Mademoiselle was satisfied by this and said no more.
Meanwhile, in the dorm, chaos reigned as Evadne, Erica and Margia were attacking Joey, Claire and Simone with pillows, bolsters and duvets, Juliet, the head of the dorm was trying, in vain, to regain control over her unruly students. Suddenly Joey froze in the act of beating Evadne with her duvet,
“Quick! Someone’s Coming!” They scampered back to their beds, all except Claire and Simone who were left, both clutching the end of a bolster, suddenly there was a ripping sound and feathers scattered all over the dorm, Claire scrambled into bed as the door opened and Miss Wilby entered to see Simone, sitting on the floor, surrounded by feathers.
“ Simone, Kindly get up, return to your bed, tomorrow morning I shall expect you in my study with your excuse for this behaviour.” Miss Wilby left and Simone promptly burst into tears, from her bed by the window Claire gave a quiet chuckle.

just a short bit, getting bored of being on pg 3!
_______________________________________________
The pillow fight had few ill effects, Simone was let off lightly, Miss Wilby put it down to “beginning-of-term-high-spirits” and only had her reciting “The song of Hiawatha”, but Simone felt she could no longer trust any of her friends, when they had not spoken up for her, She spent more time alone, or with her older cousin, but the girls, taken up with the new pupils and the fresh term’s lessons didn’t seem to notice.
Life in the blue dorm went on much as normal, (only slightly quieter). Joey and Claire were inseparable and Margia had attached herself to Erica and Evadne, Simone was generally to be found, every evening, playing alone with her paper dolls.

Juliet alone seemed to have noticed Simone’s change in character, she approached the matter cautiously, she knew how hysterical Simone could be.
“Simone come walk with me,” Simone stopped on her way to the music room, “yes?” they walked together to the jetty and sat together “Simone, what’s happened between you and Joey? You always seemed so close,” Simone turned away, “is it Claire?” As Simone had been alone since Claire’s arrival it was an obvious guess but Simone turned back, “ you’ve noticed too? I mean…” she trailed off.
“Ever since Claire came you’ve been avoiding Joey, why?“ Simone turned a tear-stained face to Juliet, “ Claire is controlling Joey, It’s not her fault!” Juliet reached out to comfort the younger girl, suddenly she froze, she gasped and clutched her side, wincing with pain.

have now Found time to write (had to take my dad into hospital, nothing serious, but lots of waiting about so i wrote some more!)

Simone looked at her in horror and then came to her senses, she ran up to school to get help.
Juliet was taken up to san and Dr Jem was summoned. Simone found Miss Betany in a classroom, collecting papers, “It was me! I’ve made Juliet ill!” Madge, used to Simone’s hysteria took her up to her room, away from the eyes of the small crowd of girls who had gathered in the doorway.
“Juliet’s illness has nothing to do with you, we don’t know what’s wrong with her but you can rest assured that you are not the cause. As soon as Dr Russell has finished seeing to her you may go and visit.”
“No! Don’t you understand? I would make it worse!”

#69:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Jul 15, 2004 12:07 pm

Well, there's a dramatic place to pause.

#70:  Author: CharlotteLocation: Casterton, Kirkby Lonsdale PostPosted: Sat Jul 17, 2004 5:26 pm

However after Dr Russell’s visit he advised Miss Betany to not let the girls see Juliet until she recovered “and given her present condition it think it would be wise for her to been seen by a specialist, I shall, with your permission, take Juliet to a sanatorium I know of until she recovers.” Miss Betany agreed and Juliet went away, that night, with the doctor.
Rumours spread round the school like wildfire, stories of a man with red eyes came in the night and spirited her away. An unknown relative had taken her away to a far off land where she was to be a princess. In “La Petit Chalet” the stories were even wilder “She has been Kidnapped by fearsome a Welsh dragon” Claire happened to be passing as she heard Amy telling this absurdity to he companion, Emily. “Do you know what’s happened to Juliet?” she asked.
“She’s been kidnapped by a welsh dragon,” replied Emily stolidly, “you just heard.” Claire waved her hand impatiently, “honestly! You babies will believe anything!” Amy and Emily exchanged glances and looked sulkily at her, “we will not!”
“Well do you want to know what’s really happened to Juliet?” The girls looked again at Claire, now eager.
“Juliet is ill, she’s gone to a sanatorium to recover, but the mystery is, how did she get ill? No one knows, but Simone was the only one with her.” The Girls stared open mouthed at Claire, “really?”
“Really.” She replied.

Joey went to her sister’s room and knocked, the door opened and Madge peered out looking weary but happy, “Hello Joey-Baba, What is it?“ She had caught sight of her sister’s pale face and red eyes, “Joey, are you ill?“
“No, I’m fine, what’s happened to Juliet? There are the wildest rumours spreading throughout the school! And, oh! I love Juliet as if she were my own sister, what has happened to her?“
Joey, What roomers? Who’s saying these things?“
“Everyone, the whole school, the juniors are going wild, but there stories are always so. But even us middles and the Seniors are swapping stories, someone said that her God father, a convicted criminal on the run has taken her away, has she gone for good?“
Madge was relived that Joey did not seem to be ill, but angry that a simple matter of a girl going away unexpectedly, had, not only kept her awake all night, supervising Juliet’s dispatch, but had got her school into a frenzy which had got her frail sister into such a state. She rose,
“Where are you going?”
“To tell the Girls where Juliet’s has gone to finish these rumours.”
Miss Bettany’s address to the girls was brief and to the point, she told them that Juliet had been taken ill and had gone to a sanatorium to recover.
The speech from the headmistress had the opposite effect from the one intended, although all the wild rumours ceased, however the school was alarmed, what was this illness and though only the juniors and middles voiced it, could it be caught?

Ooh. Interesting...

So why does Claire have such a thing against Simone?

#81:  Author: EllieLocation: Lincolnshire PostPosted: Sun Jul 25, 2004 8:09 pm

A new drabble, well new to me anyway. The Tyrol, Madge as HM and an evil new girl....what else could one ask for, except for more of course.

Looking forward to more of this. Is Claire controlling all the middles and juniours now?

Just a short bit for now...

Within minutes of Madge giving her announcement the school had separated into groups to discuss Juliet’s condition. Simone was the only person not there and Claire noticed.
“Where do you think Simone is?” she asked Amy. “I don’t know,” Amy shook her head “ What does it matter? We all might be about to be very ill. Maybe she’s already ill and in san.”
“Maybe she is in san, but she’s not ill. She was the only one with Simone with Juliet when she got ill,” Amy shot a scared look at Claire “do you mean that Simone is the reason that Juliet’s ill?”
Claire shrugged, “Maybe.”
She wandered off to find Joey, but, out the corner of her eye, she watched Amy spread this news around the younger members of the school.

a little more...
______________
When Madge heard the latest rumour from her younger sister her lips grew white and her eyes flashed with anger, she rose, “I am going to address the girls again and quash these silly rumours, Joey do you know who it is starting them?” Joey shook her head, “It’s just talk, but so many people are getting the same idea, of course I knew it was all nonsense. Simone? Poisoning Juliet? What nonsense!” Suddenly flushed, “I didn’t tell you that before, well, they’re just silly rumours, nonsense really.”
Madge looked again at Joey trying to see if she was playing the fool, “Joey, I am going to address the school on this information, If I find that it is untrue, I shall be very angry.” Joey looked mutinous, “you don’t believe me?” Her voice sounded hurt and Madge finally knew that it was the truth “It’s just that it’s so unusual, and bizarre, I thought this might be another trick being played by you middles.”
Joey looked hurt at these words, “Playing a trick? Us middles? On you? We wouldn’t, honest injun, we wouldn’t!” Madge giggled and then became serious again,
“No, This matter has to be sorted out once an for all,” She rose and made her way to the door, “Joey, you go and tell the prefects to summon the school, I want to give an announcement.”

have typed it up again, more soon!
The announcement seemed to have had the required effect on the girls, Joey reported that no more wild rumours were being spread around Madge looked satisfied, then she looked at Joey beadily, “Joey,” Joey looked up “you don’t know who’s bee n spreading these rumours around do you?” Joey jumped to her feet; it was like a firework had gone off inside her. “You use me! Just because I’m your sister, you use me as a spy, to find things out for you, and I don’t like being your sneak.” Madge sat motionless, shocked by this unexpected outburst, then she regained her senses, “Joey that is incredibly rude, go to your dormitory, I do not wish to see you again until you’re in a better frame of mind. Now, off to your dormitory.” Joey stormed out glowering, but when she reached the dormy her rage was driven out of her mind by something else.

Erica was bending over the wash basin, when Joey entered she looked up, Joey took one look at Erica’s pale face and rushed over, “are you ill?” this question was somewhat unnecessary given Erica’s condition. “ Is it something you ate? Or are you coming down with influenza? Shall I go and get help?” as Joey’s suggestion seemed the only possible action, Joey ran to her sister’s study “Madge, Madge, come quickly it’s Erica, she’s ill!” Madge looked at Joey searchingly, “Joey, if I find out that this is a joke I will-“
“No it’s not, just come quickly. She is ill.”
Madge finally believed Joey and followed her from the room, “is she really ill Joey? Do you know why? Is it something she ate? Or is she coming down with influenza?” Joey shrugged “I don’t know, but if it was something she ate surely we’d all be ill?”
When they reached the dormy they entered and sure enough Erica was still there looking the worse for wear,

some more!
___________

Madge took Erica to her study to lie down, but couldn’t find a thing wrong with her, and decided that she must have just eaten too much, and indeed she noticed that Erica did seem to have a large appetite for a girl of her age. Madge left the idea alone for some days but when no less than 3 people had discovered Erica being ill in various parts in the school, she decided to have a talk with the girl.
“Erica, Is anything wrong? You seem to be ill, however you haven’t got temperature and you look healthy enough. Is something worrying you?”
Ms Bettany was so consoling, Erica looked into her face.
“I am worried about something. It was very Kind of you to agree to take me a term earlier than we expected, but I do really miss my family, I want to see them again, I feel so cut off from them. I suppose that’s what’s making me ill.” Madge looked hard into the girl's face and was satisfied with her answer.
“But what can we do to help?”
Erica looked startled, “we, I’m sure I’ll be fine soon, It’s just the shock, I’ve never been away from mother and father so long. But I am getting used to it.”
“ I should think so to,” replied Madge, “It’s almost half term!” then she laughed, “doesn’t time fly!” Erica smiled too, and then rose
“Thank you Madame, this has helped me a lot, but I must go, it is my practice time. Good bye! And thank you.”
As Erica left Miss Bettany looked up, she noticed that she was a little more rounded than when she arrived, “that’s good,” Madge thought. ” This mountain air is good for her, she looks more like a schoolgirl and less like a model” she smiled to herself and decided that the Erica mystery was solved.

Yikes! I must be dim - that hadn't occurred to me - I thought she was making herself ill to frame Simone, or someone.

I'd thought it might be an eating disorder -- but Ellie's explanation makes more sense giving the rumors about Juliet's illness. Confused

ETA given the rumors, I mean.
