Quote:
“She’s only given me sixpence instead of two shillings, and it’ll all have to go into the church c’llections tomorrow, ‘cos it’s two thrip’nies.”
“What rotten luck!” Tom exclaimed. “I say, Barbara, if you want anything I’ll lend you a bob.”
Barbara shook her head at this munificent offer, and Bride cried in horrified tones, “She can’t borrow, Tom! It isn’t allowed.”
“Why on earth not? ‘Tisn’t as if she wouldn’t pay me back. Of course she would, and I’ve got the cash and don’t want it specially this week.”

When reading this I started to wonder why Barbara couldn't change her thrupennies with Tom or one of the others and give a penny or tuppence to each collections. This wouldn't be borrowing so any ideas why she didn't do it?

Maybe they didn't have change...? (Bear in mind decimalisation occured long before I was even thought of and I can't get my head around pre-decimal currency)

Presumably because it would be seen as dishonest to spend money when it has been deiberately docked by Matey

Also the others might not have had exactly the right change

a *bob* is a shilling ie 12d (d = old pennies)

At one point, someone is fined and only allowed money for church collections (and possibly stamps?) Sorry, have no idea of the reference, but if anyone recognises it, I think it would support Dawn's point.

Also, there might have been a suggested amount that they were honour bound to put into the collection. So, giving change for that would have been rather naughty. When my Mum was a cub leader and taking the boys to church when they were away at camp, one enterprising cub put his sixpence onto the plate and helped himself to change. She was not amused, but felt it was hardly the time or the place to make a scene. I feel fairly sure the little boy would have regretted it later ... knowing my Mum as I do.

Oh, poor child. he might not have come from a church-going family, so wouldn't have known!

I'm sure there's a Noel Streatfeild book where someone asks nana (or equivalent!) for their church collection in pennies in order to keep some and her sister says this would be wrong cos the sixpence is for the church. Think it's Wintle's Wonders/ Dancing Shoes...

My main reasoning behind asking was that the way it was put made it sound that she wouldn't normally have put threepence into each collection, just as that was the coinage she didn't have a choice

I've just read the same quote, and had the same 'wonderings'. For some reason I always understood that children put a penny in church collections. Three pence seems rather a lot to me, especially as they had to buy such a lot with their pocket money. I can understand about their not being allowed to borrow money from each other.

Im sure that one of the Ozanne twins tells a story about how the other one withdrew money from the bank after having pocket money docked by Matey and that the subsequent lecture she recieved about dishonesty had her (in CS lingo) weeping like a waterspout!

Maybe in 'Tom'?

I think that part follows immeadiately after the part that Claire quoted.

Rosie - I have the same memory as you and also of the Nana-type person saying something to the effect of "I wasn't born yesterday"
