OK, next summer I am planning to go to the Achensee with some friends (oh, and Chloë) as part of my Queen's Guide Award.

The purpose of my (4-day) exploration is to visit CS sites in the area and though I've been there before (when I was 15) I was wondering if there was anyone whose brain I could pick about this.

Evidently my fluffy little friends with whom I am going exploring will be helping me decide what we do and when etc, but what I am pondering at the moment (well, along with lots and LOTS of other things that I needn't bore you with) is the question of what the most important CS-y things to do are.

Anyone got any ideas/hints/tips/suggestions?

(And as I am running the trip, I am hoping to avoid fatal/near-fatal calamities; any other sort of calamities; someone becoming so ill only the Red Sarafan can save them etc etc tc... although, obviously, I will be keeping my eyes open for any nice doctor-types there might be about the place Mr. Green)

Swim in the lake?

I think C_Rachel and Rebecca have been there recently so they may be able to give you more info.

I know its not EBD but have you read the bit about the guides in Visitors? You could reinact that!!

Do you have the Achensee handbook?

Xan! Or was that not meant to sound the way I read it?!?

Depends which way you read it!! Wink

#6:  Author: RachelLocation: Plotting in my lair PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 6:46 pm

Surely you have to climb up to an alm with your knees bent and drink hot milk flavoured with onions and garlic!

I will be very disappointed in you if you don't Xan!

#7:  Author: VikkiLocation: Possibly in hell! It's certainly hot enough....... PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 6:48 pm

Rachel!!! Are you trying to KILL Xan? Cos that suggestion could well do it!!!

#8:  Author: RachelLocation: Plotting in my lair PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 7:08 pm

I wasn't actively trying to kill her but a death is always a bonus.

OK, so I totally fogot Xan's dairy free lifestyle.

Maybe, Xan, you could take a ncie bottle of Soya milk with you and add an onion and bulb of garlic to it and so be able to join in? Wink

#9:  Author: *Aletea*Location: Manchester PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 7:14 pm

And don't forget a few fag ends to give it the lovely smoky flavour!

#10:  Author: RachelLocation: Plotting in my lair PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 7:38 pm

Mmmmm-mmmmm! I bet Xan is drooling with anticipation already!

Back on to the semi-serious subject, are you planning "trips" (to places like the dripping rock) or are you looking more for "themes" (like the whole walking up the mountain path singing CS songs) ?

#11:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 8:16 pm

Visit the dripping rock. Walk around the lake and return on the steamer. Go on an expidition and get lost/stuck/rained on.

#12:  Author: PatLocation: Doncaster PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 9:34 pm

Definitely see if you can get hold of 'The Achensee Handbook' It tells you whre all the important sites are. i have a copy, and I think FOCS are ging to bring out an update sometime this year.

#13:  Author: XantheLocation: London/Cambridge PostPosted: Mon Mar 29, 2004 11:43 am

*giggling*

thank you for your lovely suggestions Wink

I do have a copy of the Achensee Handbook somewhere I think, but if FOCS are bringing out a new one soon so much the better (yippee!)

I am so early on in my plannage that I've not really considered trips/themes... though walking up the mountain path singing could be quite fun, not least as two of the people going will not ever sing Sad

I'll need to involve them in the planning to a certain degree...

And of course, I have to do a full report back on it as well Shocked

dont forget, you have to bump into a San doctor who will minister to one of your friends then mysteriously become engaged to him 3 weeks later without ever appearing to have seen him again. Although you are allowed to blush if his name/the san/doctors/romance (delete as appropriate) is mentioned.

Jennie: Chloë isn't eighteen until the end of August...

Ooh, Xan! Shiny-Xan Can/May I come??? (Will pay my Rangers sub if it's needed (since I haven't paid in the last three years oopsy!).

Please please pwetty pwease Very Happy

I take it you're camping? Ooh, I love camping Smile I hold our county record for getting an Icelandic up & down properly (okay so the fact the rain was coming was a help and bribery helped my little Guides!) And I have plenty of (hopefully not needed) dealing-with-a-fit-in-a-tent-at-3-am experience!

Oh, and I can (sort of) cook on a trangia!

(stops selling herself as she remembers it's probably so late that Xan's already submitted those particular forms to her CC...)

*edited to add a question*
How many of your friends are Chalet-nuts, Xan? Cos between you and Chloë, they'll certainly get an education (also suggests that the more Chaletians are there, the lighter bags will be since the number of CS books being taken will be fewer per person!)

#29:  Author: XantheLocation: London/Cambridge PostPosted: Mon Apr 12, 2004 6:43 pm

*makes complicated spluttery noise*

no, we won't be camping!

I have a group of CS-reading friends of the right age (hurrah!) and we will be staying in an appartment and cooking for ourselves Mr. Green

I've spent the afternoon doing some research-type-stuff in preparation for my meeting with the County Outdoor Advisor tomorrow and I am getting a little bit excited now!

I am not spreeing, I am bumping, again in search of the collective wisdom of the board...

Below are the possible activities I came up with - and I shall be asking the rest of the people coming for their ideas as well, obviously, but I just wondered if any of you can think of anything very CS-y that I have missed!

Exploring Pertisau and the immediate area
Memorial to EBD?
Hotel Post?
Try to find the Chalet?

Visit Jenbach (Spärtz in the books)
Steamer to Seespitz then mountain-railway…
Shopping (a recognised CS activity I tell you!)?
Visit to the church (where they escaped in “Exile”)?
Visit to the Jenbacher Museum in the afternoon?

Exploring the lakeside
Walk to the Dripping Rock?
Steamer on the lake?
Visit Scholastika/Buchau?
Rowing boat on the lake?
Swimming/paddling?
Visit folk-museum-thing?

Visit Innsbruck
House with the Golden Roof?
Maria-Theresien Strasse? (yes more shopping…)
Hofkirche & Folk Museum?
Ferdinandeum Museum?
Triumphal Arch?
[/i]

Help! That was me (or possibly I, it is too late/early to think about these things) - the board was mean&evil and logged me out!

Well, I'm still sulking about being too old to come on the trip, but how about going to the Sonnalpe shelf? And maybe going looking for the cave? (yes, okay, I know it doesn't really exist......)

Ooooh, and how about looking for the little church that's mentioned in Visitors? Isn't there a bit where Jo is working for a guide badge? first class, or second class or something?

Yes, and thankfully the urge to laugh was quelled by him thoughtfully showing me the MRI of my right knee, because the urge to sit and eeble overtook my tendency to laughing-at-things-that-aren't-funny...

Why, Xan? Give us the bad news. Do you need nagging to do your exercises? May we help you in that department?

#119:  Author: XantheLocation: London/Cambridge PostPosted: Tue Jun 29, 2004 3:14 pm

Oh, only because I am spectacularly bad with all things icky&squishy and I feel the MRI came into that category... yick...

Erm, and ta muchly, but nagging will assuredly not be required - I fully intend to do what I am meant to! Shocked

#120:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Tue Jun 29, 2004 3:18 pm

Oh shucks, I love nagging.

But anyway, keep us posted about the improvements or otherwise.

BTW: do you want me to go to Addenbrookes to tell the ortho that you are all grown up now, and don't need to be patted on the head? Forcibly?

#121:  Author: VikkiLocation: Possibly in hell! It's certainly hot enough....... PostPosted: Tue Jun 29, 2004 3:23 pm

Xan, I'm sure you won't need nagging, and I hope you pointed out to the surgeon that you were not in fact a seven year old, and as such did not need to be patronised in that way!

Sorry to deprive you of two of your most favourite pastimes, but it wasn't Addenbrookes, it was my local hospital... (oh yes, for I am home until sometime in September... *happy dancing*)

Edited to correct spelling and reply to Vikki!
