While staring out of the window of the library today, I was thinking about Ann's drabble, and I started wondering why (in EBD world) Joey and Grizel were such good friends given the age gap and complete dissimilarity of character. (Ann's 'forgotten sister' makes sense of this brilliantly, IMO). Then I started wondering why whether Joey actually had any friends at the High school. Given how popular she is at the CS, and how she keeps in touch with people for years, it seems strange that there is never any mention of friends from England (apart from Mary and Rosalie, who come out to join the CS anyway). And given how ill Joey was supposed to be, how on earth was she up to being on a netball team with Rosalie/Mary?

Embarassed Thank you Caz!
*feels guilty at distracting Caz from more productive activities*

There's no suggestion that their netball team was any good... Wink

The opening of the series implies Jo is a bookish type as a result of being delicate. From The School at the Chalet:

"Jo reads entirely too much," [Dick] grumbled as he went to the door. "That's one thing I hope you'll alter a little."
"She'll have plenty to take her out of doors," replied his sister serenely. "She really needs other companions."

I'd never really considered the lack of information about Joey's past at High School, but yuor right it is strange very little is mentioned. Perhaps EBD just wanted a break with the past?

As for Joey and Grizel, Im not sure you could describe them as best friends when they are younger, they bicker just a bit too much for that. But given the small numbers of pupils, especially borders, at the school to begin with, then this would have brought them together more.

I read the start of School at the other day and I was thinking how on earth had Jo been allowed to play netball seeing as she collapses in a coughing fit at the least thing!

Another EBDism? What does puzzle me, is why they pitch on Robin as the likely TB sufferer, when we never hear of her ever having as much as a chest infection, yet Jo, who is forever getting bronchitis and all sorts of chest troubles, is never even once mentioned as a candidate for the San.

I thought it was mentioned at some point (by Elizaveta's father)

Maybe Jo needed to be a smaller school to make an impression to start with (and being sister of the Head would give her a good start) then as the school got larger she was already popular so her popularity (and confidnece) grew

I don't know if this would have been true of the school Joey went to, but is it possible that it was fairly small and therefore maybe had mixed age groups in forms, or would it have been clearly defined as it is now? I just thought the mixed ages would maybe have resulted in Grizel and Joey being in the same form.
