Jack's dressing room

#1: Jack's dressing room Author: Sarah_LLocation: Redcar PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 1:08 am

What was this exactly? Would Jack have kept his clothes there, as well as dressing in it? And why did he need a dressing room in the first place - was this normal for men at the time?

#2:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 1:30 am

I've seen it in a number of books about years gone by. I think that men and women weren't supposed to see each other change - even husband and wife, so men had a seperate dressing room. Plus, at least with Jack, if he came home late he could change without turning on the bedroom light and waking up Joey.
Though in the CS world, there often seemed to be children sleeping in dressing rooms. Maybe they were older houses built when dressing rooms were used, but by CS time the dressing rooms were no longer used for their original purpose.

#3:  Author: SusanLocation: Carlisle PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 2:05 am

I expect they stemmed from times gone by when people had valets and maids to help them dress aand had to wash etc. in teir rooms. Couldn't have an impressionable maid or manservant see the master or mistress getting changed.

Like Chelsea I think they are mentioned for Doctors so if they get called out in the night or home late they can get dressed or ready for bed without disturbing their wives.

It's very nice little room, attached to the main bedroom, where Jack sleeps when he doesn't want to disturb Joey.

I was playing sardines and got stuck there ~ no one has come to find me, honest!!

#5:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 12:20 pm

*hauls Ally out by her hair*

And in fact, in Switzerland, Jack's dressing room was on the other side of the passage, not next to Jack and Joey's room! You should at least know where you are!

Oh crikey where am I then< I didn't realise one could get so lost in Freudesheim

I don't know, Ally. *worried now* Maybe you're in Reg's dressing room...

*runs away chuckling evilly*

#8:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 6:25 pm

A man's dressing room would be where he kept his clothes. There would also be single bed in there for him to sleep in if he came home late, or his wife was ill or ought not to be disturbed.

#9:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 6:39 pm

*wonders how Jennie knows this*

#10:  Author: Guest PostPosted: Thu Jan 29, 2004 9:44 pm

The bedroom was the wife's room and the dressing room the man's bedroom/changing area. I think it goes back to days when men had 'needs' and the shy, retiring wife didn't. She would allow him entry to her bedroom at suitable intervals and then 9 months later pop out a baby! It was a privilege of the rch to not have to share the same bed every night. Dorothy Sayers fans will see that she talks about Lord Peter's dressing room.

Aw, huggles honey!

#13:  Author: claireLocation: SOUTH WALES PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 5:53 pm

I think it is just used for Jack to change if he gets called out at night (I think he has a phone extension there as well)
As most of them seem to open out of the bedroom I can see why the CS girls put their young babies in them rather than the nurseries as while they were still breastfed the mother would still have to get up to them whether or not they had a nurse/nanny.
I suppose when they were common going back to the man's needs etc it also means if he was having an affair then he could get away with it as if he's not sleeping in his wife's bed then he could go anywhere at night

#14:  Author: AllyLocation: Jack Maynard's Dressing Room!! PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 6:14 pm

I'm in Freudesheim so its definitely NOT Reg's room, I think it might be Jack's secret drinking room, theres a strange smeel of achohol!!

#15:  Author: KBLocation: Melbourne, Australia PostPosted: Fri Jan 30, 2004 10:43 pm

Hmm, maybe it's Anna's secret retreat...

The stress of single-handedly running a large house and bringing up 11 children has driven her to drink!!

Most definatly. D can even snore laid on his side with his mouth closed. In fact he has even been known to snore whilst awake Evil or Very Mad

I think dressing rooms were a great idea, you could get away from your blokey if they snored too much or after arguments (sure must have beaten sleeping on a sofa!! Wink )

Pokes with elbows sometimes work, too.

Swiping the duvet is another good ploy, although that's a good idea even when there isn't snoring.

Carolyn thats fairly evil, but when i've had to share a double bed with Xan i nick the duvet Rolling Eyes

#27:  Author: Sarah_LLocation: Redcar PostPosted: Sun Feb 01, 2004 2:34 pm

I always end up with most of the duvet, but I blame my boyfriend. You se, when he turns around in bed, he doesn't take the duvet with him, so he's virtually throwing it off. Not my fault, honest. The one time recently he's snored, I simply asked him not to snore, and he stopped!

#28:  Author: AngelLocation: London, England PostPosted: Sun Feb 01, 2004 2:56 pm

Snoring is bad for the health, and I snore a lot, and no one has found a way to stop me...

I was reading some magazine article the other day, and it said something about how woman cocoon themselves in the duvet leaving men with none!

My Dad steals it from my Mum most of the time!

#31:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Sun Feb 08, 2004 5:45 pm

My dad snores - loudly. Not that big a deal given that I didn't sleep in my parents room but! I had two twin beds in my bedroom (it doubled as the guest room) so when my mum was sick and couldn't deal with my dad in her bed, he slept in the other bed in my room - generally he'd come in after I'd gone to bed, so I'd only know when I was awoken by his snoring (I'm a very light sleeper). I'd try to wake him up by throwing things at him, so he'd often awaken with all my teddies on top of him. If it didn't work, I'd take my pillow and duvet and sleep on the floor in the hallway outside the bedrooms.

Just out of interest -- What's a duvet? Some kind of bed covering I gather.

#34:  Author: ChelseaLocation: Your Imagination PostPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2004 12:58 am

Basically a duvet is a comforter. THough I usually use comforter if it goes on the bed as is, while a duvet has to be put into a cover (like a pillow goes into a pillow case). I made these disctinctions up, however, so they may not be accurate.

#35:  Author: PatMacLocation: Yorkshire England PostPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2004 2:16 am

They're not quite the same and you don't need blankets or a top sheet. they are the same as the plumeau in the Tyrol CS series. When my American Daughter in law came over the first time she was quite puzzled! However they took one home last time they came so I guess she's a convert now.

Of course I care about other bears. I was in Windsor the other week and noticed the teddy bear shop was no longer. I had all these horrifif visions of teddies wandering the streets very lost and lonely, and my Dad made it worse by mentioning skips. But then I found another shop in Eton and knew they had a home.

Well, knowing what you feel about teddy bears, I thought it was a reasonable enough question.

It's only an hour and a half tops to Windsor from mine, Vikki

And surely the fair is 10-4 or similar, in which case you could easily do both!

#82:  Author: VikkiLocation: Possibly in hell! It's certainly hot enough....... PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2004 9:17 pm

Well, I'm hoping I might make it to the fair before it finishes, but I'm not counting on it, because that way I won't be too upset if I don't! If I convince myself I can make it and then I can't, I'll end up being fed up, the other way, it's a bonus!
