Just reading "Gay" and I noticed that, on Gay's train trip to Ruth after running away from school, she and Mrs Learoyd are forced to sit in a different train compartment from 'Father' between Birmingham. If it was for the smoking compartment, I'm sure EBD would say so, and as there's a male soldier in the compartment with them, it can't be a 'women only' thing. It could be because there's not enough space, but it seems odd to leave two women/girls without a chaperone...

I've read this too and did wonder about it. I got the impression it was because the train was so full there wasn't space for them all together. I suppose ideally a chaperone would have been the ideal. But if there was only space for two to sit together then the alternative would have been for either Gay or Mrs Learoyd sitting on their own, so i suppose it was the best solution!

When you say Mrs Learoyd is that Grandmother or Father's wife. Because if it was Grandmother, I'd say she'd be perfectly capable of looking after herself.

Is this the HB you're talking about KB because I can't find anything about Father having to go in a different carriage in the PB.

But then who would be chaperoning Gay with 'Father'?

Grandmother would be considered to be a perfectly acceptable chaperone for Gay. She'd probably have cut the hands off anyone who went near Gay.

Yes, it's in the HB. And Claire, married men were considered to be good chaperones.

Somehow the fact they were married cut off all their desires? Razz
