Not sure if this is the right part of the board, but never mind! I discovered last night that the frontispieces in two of my hardbacks have come away from the spine. I also have a copy of 'Elinor M Brent Dyer's Chalet School' which is literally falling to pieces (and has been since i bought it, new, for 10p many years ago!). Does anyone know of a good, non-damaging way of fixing the pages back in (and of repairing ripped DWs)?

In my library, we usually stick loose pages back in with Copydex (foul stuff) but it's incredibly difficult to get them level with the remaining pages...

Just don't use sellotape!

Conservators tend to use materials that cause effects which can be reversed, therefore causing no permanent damage. Try something that can be dissolved in water, like a simple flour and water paste?

Not sure what to suggest if this is not strong enough!

Ripped DWs - I tend to get a library film and make a cover for the DW and just arange the broken pieces in the right places and it tends to hold it together well enough, it's not an actual fix, but it prevents further damage.

Loose pages - I have used a child's paintbrush and applied a careful smear of wood glue to the loose page edge. Don't know how conservatorially correct it is, but it does work.

Sellotape, and its many analogues are bad news for books. The only exception I would make is for cloth tape (the sort for joining pieces of carpet) It was used on one of my Richard Scarry books which had lost its spine and forty years on is still holding well. But I'd only use carpet tape on a book that had lost its spine and therefore was really not worth a lot.
