I'm sure the Heads were available to see pupils between five and seven but I always got the impression the girls were supposed to be doing prep at that time and so wondered if they ever actually managed to do so? Or was their prep excused if they went to see her?

I would imagine that they would have to finsih their prep in less time - don't some of the girls have their music practise at prep time and there's never mention of them having extra time or being excused.
I'm sure at least on a Saturday morning they finish their prep before mending and then reading so presumably they would catch up in that time.

Occasionally there's also mention of girls doing prep in the early morning (I think Jack Lambert does in Leader when she gets Len to help her).

As far as I remember, it seems to be usually the Prefects who 'drop in' on the Head; presumably they would have had free periods during the day in which to work as well. They must have had more time to work than the rest of the school anyway, given that they can never have got that much done when on prep duty.

Does anyone apart from Prefects ever make use of this rule to see the Heads?

Ummmm, completely different school here but at Kingscote (Marlows) they had a visiting time to see the Head. No-one ever availed herself of it though i think. And Head Girl also spent an evening visiting with the Head once a week and chatting over school politics. Can't even imagine doing that at my school...

In Gay, there's something about how prep starts at five-thirty, so at five-ten they have twenty minutes in which to see Miss Bubb.
