#1: Broadening our horizons... Author: pimLocation: the place where public transport doesn't work properly! PostPosted: Tue Mar 23, 2004 11:55 pm

Inspired by a conversation with PatMac about how EBD and the CS managed to influence our lives. So, um, my personal list:

1. She got me into learning languages (and look where I ended up!)
2. I've had a burning desire to visit Austria and all of Switzerland (I've only made it to Geneva so far) thanks to the books.

Dum, diddly, dum. I think there are more things I can hold EBD responsible for but I can;t remember them off the top of my head *g*

Hmm, I went to Switzerland, which I wouldn't otherwise have done, and then there's that little book thing... Embarassed

The difference between "can" and "may" is much clearer than when it was just parental nagging...

1. Learning languages - although I must admit not French and German but more outlandish ones - Arabic, Nepali, Scottish and Irish Gaelic.
2. Correct English Grammar - I find I am forever correcting my brothers and sisters. And I find that I actually am quite formal with my speech (that's what comes of writing about long ago when schoolmasters did speak formally!)
3. I want to learn to ski.
4. I want to visit Austria and Switzerland

*agrees with the languages and grammar thing!*
Going to Pertisau was definitely CS-inspired, Switzerland much less so.

Really wanted to go to boarding school! And desperately wanted to see Tirol/anywhere mentioned in CS books - got to Geneva so far, although passed through a few more places Smile

Really helped me with the whole can/may thing too.

Just realised something! In one of the books, the girls stop at Swansea to catch the coaches - cool! I live in a CS location!!! Very HappyVery HappyVery HappyVery Happy Ahem... Embarassed sorry!

Ooh, I forgot the skiing! I was sooooooooo excited the first time I went skiing last winter, and like all good CS girls on their first attempt at skiing I spent most the day on my bum going down the slopes. But it was great!

i wrote 'than I' in one of my posts! I've also got really into learning languages, history and so on. She made me write books although none have been published...

Definitely languages for me. I started learning French when I was 9, which was about when I started reading the books, so that wasn't such a big thing. I was *so* excited at the prospect at learning German, though, and really disappointed when I started (age 12) and I didn't like it half as much as French. Also made me really excited when I finally started Latin.

I chose to learn German over French and Spanish, and have visited Austria.

Sometimes its small things such as pieces of knowledge I have gained from reading the book.

-I knew about the Passion Play when it came up in conversation
- I know about 'can' and 'may'
- I found this board and thus I know about:
    Tim Tams
    Cricket
    Irish Bacon
    The Great North/South divide
    A-levels and University admissions (sort of)
    ...

They've made me more aware of grammar, certainly more in writing than in speaking though I'm pretty hopeless at it still.

Our family trip to Austria was definitely CS inspired.

Can't say it worked on the languages front - they always bored me at school. Too much like hard work!

#13:  Author: Elisabeth PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2004 7:36 pm

1. Languages - intense desire to become at least trilingual
2. Developed an intense desire to go to Austria. Last summer we went to Switzerland for our family holiday. Stayed in a chalet overlooking Lake Thun. Went to Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen (presumably inspiration for Lauterbach), Berne. We hadn't really planned to make it a CS pilgrimage but it was soooooooooo exciting to see all the real places! Dying to go to Innsbruck now.
3. Want very much to see the Passion Play. One reason for keeping up my German.

#14:  Author: claireLocation: SOUTH WALES PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2004 8:35 pm

I dropped Welsh to take German at school and did both French and German to GCSE (German to A-level) which was heavily influenced by EBD

Does wanting lots of children come into it? Maybe thats down to EBD too

* I want a long family (despite not liking children) Confused

* I knew about the Passion Play and the Jungfrau in trivial pursuit.

* I never forgot the difference between can and may.

* I always wrap up warm when I stand in doorways for fear of catching
a chill and remember my slippers and dressing gown when wandering
at night.

* I spend hours rearranging my drawers until 'Matey would approve*

* I decided to become trilingual. I'm still working on that one.

* I'm determined to marry a man called Jack. (Anyone know any? Cuz I
sure as hell don't Crying or Very sad )

My friend Kate has a brother called Jack Nicci!
(he's only 18 though!!!!)

#17:  Author: NicciLocation: UK PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2004 9:18 pm

I'm 21 next month. So maybe that's a little bit young (don't want to be called a cradle snatcher!)

Besides, another thing is that I want to marry a man several years older than myself. Abi and I were discussing this today. We think its far more romantic!

* want to see Austria and switzerland
* wanted to go to boarding school
* was sadly very excited when i found out my secondary school had a similar form system to the CS Embarassed
* wanted to be trilingual (sort of worked - I took French and German to GCSE, I just can't remember any of it now!)

Smile My list would be as follows;

1) Wanted to learn languages then found out I was useless at them although I still totally believe that if I was surrounded by them and hearing nothing else I would soak it up easily (durhhh)

2) I am fanatical about keeping my drawers tidy.

3) I turn my mattress every week

4) I impressed my boss only last week by knowing where the passion play was performed

5) I regularly try to persuade my cat to sniff others' belongings and try to search for them (strangely she's not keen)

6) I believe that eating 6 meals a day is healthy - particularly the long oblongs of sugar (my waistline would deny this)

7) I now really do like climbing hills (always with my knees bent) luckily I live in Scotland and so can indulge this.

I'm just a living breathing wannabe

Lou - how did you pronounce obermau....whatever it's called?

When I'm grown up Wink I intend to eat throughout the day -
* milk and biscuit early in the morning
* breakfast
* elevenses
* lunch
* afternoon tea (coffee and cakes)
* dinner
* supper

How does that sound?

I know about the Passion play from the books, and so was fascinated to find a wood carving from Oberammagau(sp?) in my nanna's house.

#23:  Author: LLLocation: Tottenham, London PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 2:21 pm

Oberammergau, all of you bad spellers!

#24:  Author: LouLocation: Glasgow PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 3:02 pm

Without my bad spelling of the place this is how I pronounce it - but it could just be a guess and I might have made a fool of myself.

Oh - ber -am - er - gow

Oh I forgot climbing with my knees bent, I always do this now, and have even passed the tip on to others

#27:  Author: LLLocation: Tottenham, London PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 5:44 pm

It would probably be ow- ber- um-er-gow in the german pronunciation, I think

#28:  Author: DonnaLocation: Liverpool PostPosted: Thu Mar 25, 2004 6:38 pm

Only if there's an umlaut over the first O. Personally, I pronounce it the same way as Lou.

I forgot pim said she would start this thread!

It made me want to learn languages which left me with a complicated timetable at school to fit in German as well as French.

I wanted a large family - till I realised that could be a problem moneywise and without an Anna!

My English mistress had a thing about can and may so I just accepted that it was a particular 'thing' among English mistresses - now I wonder if she was influenced by the CS books when she was younger.

It taught me a lot of geography because I tried very hard to find the places on a map of Austria when I read the early books.

I think also Joey Bettany's growing up traumas reconciled me to the idea of growing up - which I did not want to do in my teens.

And like so many others, I learned to bend my knees when walking up hills.

I was REALLY excited to discover I would do French and German at Secondary School (did them both to A-Level) and did Italian when it was offered as an after-school class...

The moral aspects of midnight-feasting occured to me on Guide camps and school trips...

I persuaded my dad to take us to the Achensee when I was 15... and I'm planning to go again next summer as part of my Queen's Guide Award (the purpose of my exploration being to visit CS sites in the area Rolling Eyes )...

Well, I like learning my languages like most people here...I'm getting my cousin to speak only Norweigan to me while I'm over in Norway in the holidays to see if it'll improve my norweigan like Elisaveta speaking Russian (I think) improved Joey's Russian.

I went the whole hog and became a teacher and now sadly realise it's nothing like being at the chalet school.
I forced my husband to go to austria on holiday and paddle in the very cold (its spring fed you know) achensee. He does draw the line at changing his name to Jack!

and i've grown my hair so I can plait it, which I can't!

Well as i didn't read the books until i was 16 it hasn't really effected me as i'd already been to the Achensee (though that was due to Xan being a cs fan) and stayed in th Post hotel (that was me as i liked the name), had gone skiing twice, learned German since i was 11 and french for a year aged 11 and spanish from 11 til 16 and italian for a year when i was 16/17, involved in the whole midnightfeast and Guding things.

But i did get all excited and undersatnd the importance when i went to Switzerland and drove people barmy by knowing stuff partly thanks to the books adn also pointing out thigs mentioned in the books, oh and insisiting tht i found a cuddy St Bernard toy for myself!
