Three little words

#1: Three little words Author: RosyLocation: Gloucestershire-London-Aberystwyth PostPosted: Sat Oct 29, 2005 10:54 am

I was absolutely torn, you know? How could he go to my parents, and tell them this, and yet not tell me? I don’t care that I was 16. If he really loved me, then why could he not have told me this? Something so utterly fundamental. I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Len, darling. How could I have told you? He said, looking at me in a manner that half suggested appeasement, under which fear undoubtedly lay.

I have no idea what to do. And now, here I am. Engaged. That seems a strange word to say. Me. Engaged. It all seemed to happen so fast. I felt as if I had to say yes. I don’t know of anyone who actually said no to an engagement. And nobody else here is. Who do I tell how I feel? My sisters wouldn’t understand. Everyone else here is so excited. And all I feel is…I don’t think even I know how I feel. It’s not that I don’t want to be engaged, it just happened so fast.

He put his head in his hands, and sat quietly for a few moments. “Len, you’re all I ever wanted. Can’t you see that? How could I have told you? You wouldn’t have wanted to hear this, and you know it.” He sighed heavily and then looked straight at me “If you’re trying to break off the engagement then please just tell me now.”

I realised then, that my heart sank, when he spoke those words.

We sat there in silence for a little while. Just loosely entwined fingers touching. And it was then that it dawned on me that although I was in part afraid, I was in part happy.

“I don’t want to break off the engagement.” I said quietly, looking at him, and seeing the relief flickering across his eyes.

He looked back at me. And I was sure that my heart skipped a beat.

“Talk to me Len. You aren’t happy. Tell me what to do to make it right.”

I wriggled a little closer, and brought my head down on his chest. It felt oddly right, as he dropped a kiss onto the top of my head gently. Did I dare to tell him how I really felt? This was all so new to me, and I felt like a lost child in so many ways.

“It isn’t that I don’t love you,” I replied, as he stroked my hair gently, “because I do.”

I felt him relax a little as I said those words, and I realised he was shaking a little. Maybe he was finding all this as strange and hard as I was.

“And I love you,” he answered.

“It’s just happened so quickly. Three weeks ago we were just friends. And now here we are. Engaged. And it feels like I’ve barely had time to catch my breath. I just can’t keep up with it all. Do you understand what I mean?” I shifted myself to look at him, and he smiled at me, before reaching to kiss me gently.

“I loved you for so long Len. And I can’t quite believe you actually agreed to marry me. I was never sure that you would. I mean, I hoped and prayed, but you know your own mind. I never wanted to pressurise you into anything. And had you said no, then I would have accepted it somehow.”

That was the first time he had said those words to me. Three little words. Words that changed everything for me.

“I remember so clearly the panic that flooded through me, when I heard he was missing. I was beside myself. I suddenly wanted you so badly, and you weren’t there. I had no idea where you were, and what had changed to make me feel like this. That morning was horrendous.”
He had taken my hands in his again, and I felt a smile creep across my face. This felt right. Yes, he was older than me, and yes I was soon to go to Oxford, but being with him made my heart sing.

“ I should have asked you properly, you know.” He commented, as we sat there, hands entwined.

A giggle rose up inside of me.

“You can ask me again,” I replied mischeviously, and he looked at me quizzically. “Ask me again.”

“You want me to propose to you again?” He repeated.

I nodded.

He raised one eyebrow at me, kissed me on the tip of my nose, and pulled me to my feet.

“Your wish is my command.” He replied, and dropping to one knee, he pulled out a little green box. “I’ve been waiting for the right time to give you this,” he said, as he opened the box, “and now seems as good a time as any.”

It seemed so strange that we were both shaking a little, given that we were already engaged.

“Mary Helena Maynard,” he began, and taking my left hand into his, he began to slip my engagement ring onto my finger.
“ I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my days with you. Would you do me the greatest honour and agree to be my wife?”

I found tears spilling down my cheeks. I know not why, whether it was relief, or just happiness. “Oh Reg, of course I will.” I whispered, and he stood up, and wrapped his arms around me, with the biggest grin I’ve ever seen on anyone, across his face.
