#1: The new Bettany baby Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Mon Oct 17, 2005 12:39 pm

Madge Bettany stared out of the window at the pouring rain, which somehow seemed to suit her mood. She kicked at the wall. She didn’t want another brother or sister. She and Dick had each other; they didn’t need anybody else. People seemed to expect her to be excited about it, but she didn’t like babies. They were smelly and noisy. If they were asleep you had to tiptoe around and whisper so as not to wake them. When they were awake they screamed or were sick the whole time. She kicked the wall again, harder. A baby brother or sister would ruin everything.

Meg Bettany sighed. She felt so tired and so hot. Lying on her bed she longed for a breeze to freshen the air and lift the oppressive humidity, but none came. Despite her discomfort, she smiled as she felt the baby move inside her. “You’re going to be a strong one, aren’t you,” she whispered to her unborn child, “a survivor.” She had taken such great care with this pregnancy; after Dick and Madge had been born there had been two stillborn births, then miscarriage after miscarriage.

When she had discovered she was with child again, she had hardly dared hope. She had taken great care, getting plenty of rest, avoiding anything strenuous over the last few months, praying fervently, and as she went from week to week with no sign of the dreaded bleeding and had felt the child stir within her, she had finally begun to believe that, this time, she would be blessed with a healthy infant, a brother or sister for Dick and Madge. Eventually, when she had less than two months to go, she had been sure enough to tell them.

Thanks, Liz. I am also wondering what made Madge change her mind. It's nice to see an insight into Meg's mind as well.

A friend of mine is currently expecting and I don't think her husband's 11-year-old is too impressed - having a baby around the house when you're that age probably doesn't seem like much fun! Maybe it is Mr (or was he a Major?) and Mrs Bettany's deaths that make Madge change her mind? Sad that Mrs Bettany has had so many problems but it explains the big age gap between the twins and Joey. Thanks Liz.

Dick didn’t understand why Madge was so upset at the prospect of a baby brother or sister. Of course, it would affect her more than him, because he would be going to England soon to go to school there, so he wouldn’t be around anyway, but he thought his twin was being a bit silly about it and had tried to tell her the baby would not really make any difference at all to their lives. She had stamped her foot and insisted that of course it would change everything, but she couldn’t make him understand that they wouldn’t be special in the same way any more.

“We’ll still be twins; that makes us special.” Dick had tried to reassure her.

Madge knew their twinship made them special, but she had seen enough of babies to know that everybody thought they were wonderful and exclaimed how beautiful they were. Madge thought they were red, wrinkled, ugly things, like Captain and Mrs Callaghan’s boy who had been sick on her last time they had visited; he was a really ugly baby!

Madge wasn’t beautiful, but with her long dark curly hair, dark eyes, fair skin and delicate bone structure, she was pretty enough to get plenty of comments and attention from those around her, and the attention had led to her being a little vain and rather spoilt. She hoped the baby wouldn’t be a girl. She enjoyed being the daughter of the house and didn’t want to share her position with anybody.

#16:  Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Mon Oct 17, 2005 9:14 pm

Madge ruled the roost in the Bettany house. Dick nearly always did what his strong-willed twin told him, their mother didn't like to deny her precious children anything, and her father, when he was home, liked to indulge his pretty daughter. Madge had soon learnt that a smile would get most of the servants twisted around her little finger. But a baby would spoil all that.

And the baby was making Mother ill. Mother had often been ill before, but with the baby she was doing nothing but lying on her bed resting most of the time. She didn’t have time to play games with Dick and Madge, or to take them out riding. Father spent all the time he was in the house looking after Mother, so there were no more games with him either. Madge adored her parents, and resented all the more that this baby was taking them away from her and it hadn’t even arrived yet.

Why did they want another baby anyway? She frowned and kicked the wall again. They had her and Dick; weren’t they enough? Nobody would have time for her with a baby around. She would be on her own and it was all this stupid baby’s fault. She would hate it. She already did hate it. She gave the wall one last kick, then wandered disconsolately around the bungalow, scowling. She paused outside her mother’s room and peeped in the gap by the door. Her father was in there too. She watched as he laughed and rested his hand on the bump where the baby was, then kissed Meg. Her mother was smiling and happy – they didn’t notice Madge in the doorway, they didn’t need her. Nobody needed her. Dick was excited about going to school and would forget her. Mother and Father would have the new baby, and would forget her.

She wouldn’t be forgotten. She would make them remember her. She slipped quietly away to find a quiet place where she could think out a plan.

#22:  Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Tue Oct 18, 2005 7:17 am

It was her own special place. Dick knew about it, they used to share it, but he never came here any more, so now it was hers. She hadn’t minded sharing it with Dick, but she wouldn’t share it with the baby. She wouldn’t share anything with the baby. The baby who was going to take everything and everyone away from her wouldn’t have her special place as well!

She slipped into the guest bedroom, lay flat on her stomach and wriggled under the bed, not stopping until she was right up against the wall. On the other side of the wall was her parents’ bedroom and she could hear the muffled sound of their voices, and occasional laughter. She wondered how long she could stay here before they missed her and looked for her. What if they didn’t miss her? Nobody had time for her anyway now this baby was coming. There must be something she could do to get their attention. Maybe she should cut her hair. Father had always loved her long dark curls. But what if he didn’t notice? And everybody said she had lovely hair – the baby wouldn’t have hair like hers. No, she would have to think of something else. There had to be a way to stop everyone loving the baby more than her. She lay there in the dimness thinking, and gradually her eyelids grew heavy and she fell asleep.

Oh poor Madge, how hard it is to feel that you are forgotten because there is a 'new' baby expected. I hope that her parents will realise what is happening, and talk to her. They have to reassure her that they love her just as much as they ever did.

Thanks Liz

A loud scream tore through the silent house, and Madge woke with a start. Her eyes sprung open and, disorientated, she stared into darkness for a moment, then remembered where she was. Another scream rang out. It came from the other side of the wall. Terrified Madge started to wriggle out from under the bed. She got to her feet and ran across the room to the door. In the darkness she banged her arm on the corner of a cupboard, but she barely noticed it. Another scream drowned out the sound of her ‘oww!’

It was such a terrible sound. Madge wondered if it was the sound of the demons her Ayah had once told her about who came and snatched away babies. Had the baby come while she was sleeping? Madge was rather vague about the details of how a baby arrived. Another scream came and she shivered. She hated the baby, but she didn’t want it to be snatched away. She eased open the door. Maybe if she was in time she would be able to stop the demons. She crept along the hallway to her mother’s room. Another scream confirmed that that was where the demons were. They wouldn’t hurt her mother would they? She took a deep breath. She had to be brave. If she saved the baby maybe they would still love her.

Taking a deep breath, she reached for the door handle.

Ooooh Liz, this looks good! Just caught up from the beginning! I can definitely see where Sybil gets her temperament from!

I loved Madge's description of babies:
Quote:
They were smelly and noisy. If they were asleep you had to tiptoe around and whisper so as not to wake them. When they were awake they screamed or were sick the whole time.

Laughing Laughing

Wibbling a little about Madge's reaction to what is coming next... Sad

Thanks, Liz. I'm glad there is a tiny sign of Madge starting to warm to the baby. I wonder why Madge did cut her hair shorter?

#34:  Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Tue Oct 18, 2005 4:20 pm

She didn't actually cut her hair short, Chair, she just thought about it as a way to get attention, but decided not to.

“Madge!” She looked up at the sound of her name to see her father standing at the end of the corridor. “Madge, darling, don’t go in there.” She could hear the urgency in his voice, and let her hand drop from the handle.

“But the demons will steal the baby.”

“It’s alright, nobody will steal the baby. Come with me.” He held out his hand and Madge hesitated a moment then ran towards him and took his hand.

“Are you sure the baby will be safe?”

David hesitated. He hoped desperately that both the baby and Meg would be safe, but he didn’t dare promise what might not be true. “Nobody will steal the baby.” he repeated at last. “But what are you doing here anyway? We thought you’d gone to the Callaghan’s with Dick.” He tightened his grip on her hand as his wife screamed in agony again.

“Come on Madge, come and sit with me in the study.” She willingly went along with him. Despite the closed door, the agonised cries could still be heard. Madge looked at her father with worried eyes and despite the affront to her 12-year-old dignity, did not complain when he sat her on his lap.

“Why is there so much screaming?” Madge asked after they had sat in silence for a few minutes, taking comfort from each other’s presence. “Are the demons angry?”

“There are no demons to steal the baby,” David told her, “that’s just a story.”

“But who is screaming then?”

Sorry to disappoint you all...

David paused, and wished he had not left it to the servants to make sure the children were safely out of the house, but he had been occupied with Meg until help came; what else could he have done? “It’s …” his difficult explanation was interrupted by the sound of a different scream. “You hear that, Madge? That one’s the baby.” A smile lit up his face.

Madge scrambled off his lap and looked at him uncertainly. He looked so happy about the baby. She loved her father and wanted him to be happy, but what if the baby meant he stopped loving her? Then she remembered how she had felt when she thought the baby had been taken by demons. She hadn’t wanted that to happen either. While the confused thoughts chased each other through her mind, her father got up and went to the door. She heard him calling out to somebody and get a reply, then he was back, grabbing her round her waist and swinging her up in the air.

“You’ve got a baby sister, Madgie,” he told her, “a little baby girl.”

A sister. A brother might not have been so bad. She would still have been the daughter of the house.

“We can go to see her in a little while,” David told her. “Would you like that?” He looked at her, concerned at her quietness. It was not like his daughter to be unsure of herself. “You can come with me and we’ll be the first to see her,” he coaxed. “Don’t you want to see her? I’m sure she’ll be pleased to meet her big sister.”

Big sister. Suddenly that sounded an important thing to be. A big sister was someone who was looked up to. She thought of Emily Hatherford’s big sister, and the pretty dresses she wore and the grand parties she talked about. The baby would look at her with the same awe that Emily and Madge looked at Chloë Hatherford. She could tell the baby what to do like Chloë told Emily. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all. She smiled at her father and nodded.

A short while later, a maidservant came to summon them, and Madge once more slipped her hand into her father’s as they walked along. Together they entered the bedroom. Meg was lying on the bed, white with exhaustion, but her face radiating happiness. Next to the bed was a crib.

“You go and look at the baby,” David said, releasing her hand, and he went to bend over his wife, smoothing a damp curl back from her forehead and giving her a tender kiss, while Madge walked a little reluctantly towards the crib.

The baby didn’t look like much, Madge thought; a tiny little thing, with a bright red face, and lots of black hair, but not ugly like she’d expected. Then David was stooping over the crib as well, carefully lifting the baby out and cuddling her. “She’s perfect,” he said, gazing at her and gently stroking the soft cheek. “Come and sit in the chair Madge, and you can hold baby Josephine.” He invited after a few minutes.

Feeling important, Madge sat down and held out her arms. David gently lowered the baby into them, “hold her head carefully now, because her neck’s not strong enough to hold it herself. That’s right.”

Madge cradled the baby in her arms. Suddenly the jealousy, uncertainty, anger and self-importance vanished away as her little sister opened dark blue eyes and looked at her. Madge felt a surge of love and protectiveness flood through her. Nothing mattered but this helpless, vulnerable, inexplicably precious bundle in her arms.

“Hello Josephine,” she whispered, “I’m your big sister, and I will always be here to look after you.” She smiled as she made the promise and Josephine blinked as if she understood.

~~~~~
Six months later, Madge was blinking back the tears in her eyes as she repeated the vow.
THE END
