For several minutes now the defences were being built. A call of “2 minutes more, girls” caused a flurry of movement as the last few gaps were hastily blocked.

PHEEEEEEEEE!!

The whistle blasted clearly through the crisp air. From behind the snow-reinforced bushes flew the first snowball. It landed softly, well away from its target, but was compensated for by the pelter that followed swiftly after it. Voices rang out and peals of laughter filled the air as the snow flew back and forth, covering all and sundry with its fine powder.

Cheeks glowed and eyes sparkled as the two parties attacked each other moving back and forth across the contested ground.

Booted feet trampled the frozen snow, occasionally slipping, but no harm was done and those who fell were hauled to their feet with much goodwill. On occasion the assistance came with the price of a handful of snow, but this was accepted with grace and promptly returned.

Captives were taken on either side. The vanquished were reluctant to leave the field of battle, but were soon taking advantage of being the first to get to the hot water and steaming coffee waiting inside.

At last, breathless, rosy and laughing, the last snowball flung, the forts demolished, a draw declared, the remainder of the girls made their way indoors.

The first snowfight of the winter was over.
