'Dilemma' bunny seems to be hiding in Jonathans room at the moment, however, some of the inspiration for this came during my re- read of the 'Armishire' books- including the fill- ins! The vast throng of all ages listened intently to the lady standing on the platform that had been built especially for this event. Her voice reached clearly to the back of the crowd, as she spoke the vow that had been made so long ago. Many of the older women had tears in their eyes, remembering friends from earlier days- many of whom had never been heard from since.Even the younger children were stilled by the solemnity of the occaision. The prayers followed the vow, with those that knew them adding their voices,and when they were completed, the lady placed the package that she had been holding into the time capsule, added to those mementos throughout the years. Workmen placed the capsule into its resting place, and, as they did so, there was a stir in the crowd, and two people came forward- the youngest member of the current school, and the Founder. Each was invited to toss a handful of earth into the hole, and then the workmen completed their task. When the ceremony was complete, everyone dispersed to their various abodes for kaffee und kuchen. Later that evening,just before abendessen, Joey Maynard stood at the open gate, looking out over the lake she loved so dearly.It hadn't really changed all that much from her younger days, and she was still able to pick out some landmarks from those earlier years. She smiled a little wistfully, remembering past episodes, and then jumped as a voice behind her said "Are you ok Grandma?" She turned, and saw Marilyn Entwhistle- eldest granddaughter, and current Head Girl of the Chalet School walking towards her. "I'm alright Marilyn, just indulging in some memories, thats all!" she said "I suppose you've come to call me for abendessen?" she continued, as she turned back for a last look at the lake. "You know" she said, as they made their way towards the Chalet, " I'm so happy that Irma was able to persuade the Hydro- Electric company to allow us to do this on the Schools Golden Jubilee". As they reached the door of the Chalet, her voice softened, so that Marilyn only just heard the final words. "And glad- so very glad- that the Chalet School Peace League has finally come home!" |
