“Do you think you overreacted?” Toby Forrest asked, patiently, the next Friday.

“Yes, but I don’t know how to apologise. I did to my cousin, but – well, the other person is a bit more difficult to talk to. He doesn’t like me very much.”

“Are you sure about that? What do you think his reasons are for not liking you?”

“Oh, he’s just… I don’t know. He’s never liked me. I met him when I was nineteen or twenty and I’d gone to London to stay with Ri – with my brother. It was just before Suez, and all of his friends were going on about how awful it was. I thought they were talking about the fact there might be another war, but they were talking about Britain’s aggression… They had piles of leaflets they were distributing.”

“What did you say?”

“Nothing. What could I have said? I told my brother I’d had a good time and went back to Portsmouth. I was naïve, I suppose. I hadn’t realised that people were opposed to it.”

“So did you go to Suez?”

“Yes, I was on the HMS Eagle. I was nineteen.”

“How are you finding the Valium?”

“I’m sleeping better. I was sitting up most nights and worrying about things, but now I don’t, but apart from that, I don’t know. It doesn’t seem to make much difference.”

“I see. We’ll give it another week and then review.”

John was reminded of Surgeon-Commander Bailey. “Dr Forrest,” he began, hesitantly.

“Yes?” Toby looked up at once.

“I’ve got a Medical Board in September, before they’ll let me back. I don’t know if they’ve written to you. I did give them your name.”

“Yes, he did write. I was going to speak to you about it, actually. They want copies of your file and they’ve asked if Dr Lyndhurst and I would make a psychiatric assessment.”

“What does that involve?”

“I’ll just write a letter telling them how you’re doing and get Dr Lyndhurst to counter-sign it. His name carries more weight than mine. Then we’ll add a recommendation that you’re fit to go – well, wherever you’re sent. Do you know where you will go?”

“No. I thought I’d go back to the Middle East, but now I’m not sure. What would Dr Lyndhurst write?”

“We’d write it together, I should imagine.”

“I would like to go back. I do feel better.”

“Good.” Dr Forrest moved on to other things.

“Do you have any plans while you’re in London?” he asked at the end of the session.

“I’m meeting my sister-in-law for lunch.” John said, studying the photograph on the doctor’s desk, a little girl with dark red hair. Toby followed his gaze and smiled.

“My daughter,” he said, straightening the frame.

“She’s lovely.”

“Her name’s Caitlin. She’s three soon.” In answer to John’s unspoken question, he continued, “She lives with me. Her mother remarried and well – we don’t see her anymore.”

*

John took the tube to meet Mary-Lou in Kensington. He had been surprised when she had telephoned the Quadrant and suggested lunch next time he was in Town, but had decided that if Mary-Lou wanted to talk to him about something, he would prefer to get it over as soon as possible.

The tube was busy and hot and he was glad to leave it and walk for a while. Mary-Lou had suggested a small café and he found it easily.

She was sat inside, with Lida Craven, who smiled at him, warmly. John grinned back, wondering why she was there.

“John, You know Phil, don’t you? She and I were at school together.”

“Yes, I do. Good afternoon.”

“I’m afraid I’ve confused everybody with my name. My husband called me Lida, you see, because it was more Danish, and I just carried on with it when we moved back to England.” She said, softly. He looked at her and noticed her pregnancy dress and tiny bump.

She didn’t drink any alcohol and neither did he, remembering the tablets. Mary-Lou told them about the plans for her father’s funeral and about the Camerons. She asked eagerly about the triplets and more anxiously, about Tom’s sleepwalking. The conversation moved onto other things, although Lida was fairly quiet.

“It’s nice to see you again,” she said to John, while Mary-Lou was in the bathroom. “You look well.”

“Thanks. And you.”

“You’re very polite, but I know I look dreadful. I’m not having an easy time. Mary-Lou’s been very kind to me.”

"That's good," John pushed his plate away and poured some more water for
them both. “And it was my aunt’s school you went to? You knew Mary-Lou from there?”

“Yes. We didn’t get on very well together at school,” Lida said, carefully, “But she’s been very good to me recently.”

“I remember, you said that in Howells.”

“I suppose people change.” Lida unconsciously rubbed her stomach.

*

“Thanks for coming for lunch, John,” Mary-Lou said as she kissed him goodbye at Paddington station.

“I enjoyed it, thanks for asking me.”

“I’m glad you’re feeling better. You do look better, and you’ve caught the sun. I expect you’ve been swimming lots. I hope I’ll be able to come down next week, but of course, it all depends. Oh look, there’s Daniel. Daniel!”

“Hello,” Daniel looked pleased to see them both and kissed Mary-Lou. “Are you going to the Quadrant?”

“John is, I’m not. I’ve still got a few things to finish before the funeral next week. You’ll have company on the train. Where are you sitting, Daniel? And you, John?” Briskly efficient, she manoeuvred them into seats in the same compartment, chattering for the whole time, and bid them farewell. The guard blew his whistle and the train pulled out.

“This is good, it’s such a long and boring journey to make alone,” Daniel said, politely. “I usually bring work with me.” He paused, “I do want to apologise for offending you yesterday. It wasn’t my intention at all. I am sorry.”

“I should apologise too. I’m sorry. It’s just… No. I was rude.”

“We can draw a line under it and start again.” Daniel suggested, looking rather awkward, but John nodded.

“I’d like that,” he said.

“Me too.” Daniel smiled.

Their conversation was hesitant at first, but soon smoothed out. Daniel made John laugh once or twice with anecdotes from his day. He kept off the subject of the Navy, and John’s depression and they discussed books and what they were both reading, although Daniel admitted he didn’t have much time at present.

“Am I interrupting your work?” John asked.

“No, I’ve had enough of it. I’m going to spend the weekend with Freddie and your sister and not even look at it.”

“I’m coming to Maeve’s too – for Saturday. Maeve wants me to meet the children.” John said. “I only met them for the first time this summer, and – well, she suggested I spend some time with them.”

“Lucy’s my goddaughter, you know,” Daniel said. “I’m very fond of them both. Annabelle’s very like Maeve, in character. Lucy’s more like Freddie was. And yes, it’s nice you can spend time with them. Your nieces.”

“Yes,” John looked out of the window at the scenery flashing past, then back at Daniel. “I’d like to get to know them, and for them to know me as something other than a name on a birthday card.”

“They’re nice kids.” Daniel said.

“I’m glad Maeve’s happy.” John replied.

Are you not happy? The question flashed through Daniel’s mind, but it wasn’t the right time to ask such a personal thing. Besides, he thought he knew the answer. Maeve and her family seemed a safe subject for discussion, so he stuck to that and asked questions, pleased when John relaxed and spoke more and more as they got nearer to Devonshire. He made a mental note to telephone Toby Forrest and ask for a report. After all, John was Rix’s brother and he had been friends with Rix for years. He woke up to the fact that John had asked him a question.

“I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention,”

“I couldn’t remember how you were related to Freddie, Maeve’s husband.”

“We’re cousins.”

“I thought so – you don’t look alike.”

“No, he looks a lot like my mother, though. She was fair. She and Aunt Annabelle were sisters. I’ve been told I look like my father.”

“Don’t you know what he looked like?” John asked, with some curiosity.

“Well, yes, I just meant that my aunt told me I looked like him. I do remember him, of course.” Daniel said, frowning slightly.

Rix met John at Sheepheys Junction, which he wasn’t expecting.

“Dad’s not very well,” he said, calmly, after he had greeted his brother and his friend. “I drove him to Bideford General, but it’s nothing, really. I just thought you should know.”

“Is he all right?”

“He had some pains, but I think – well, I know, it was because he insisted on doing most of the work on the back field himself. I wish he’d listen to me. Anyway, it’s nothing, as I said. I’m going to drop you off at the Quadrant and go and collect him. He just needs to have a rest and he can do that at home.”

“Are you sure? Wouldn’t he…”

“Who’s the doctor here?” Rix said, annoyed. “I told you, he’s fine."

Hey! Mia! Don't kill Dick off, y'hear me? You already killed Peggy off. We don't need any more deaths just now.

Very nice to see this back. I keep getting confused with some of the characters (Daniel v. David), but I think I'm doing okay with it now. It's so interesting to see Phil Craven back, too. Love!

I hope this isn't too confusing, but it's a flashback

“I don’t know how to thank you and Madge, Jem,” Daddy was saying. Jackie hesitated outside, his hand on the door handle. Uncle Jem and Daddy were talking and sometimes Uncle Jem could get very angry if he was disturbed in his study. “We’re grateful for everything you’ve done.”

“It’s been a pleasure,” Uncle Jem replied. Jackie moved away from the door, which was ajar, and decided to wait until they had finished their conversation. He wouldn’t listen, that wasn’t right, he would think about the story he was writing in his English composition book over the holidays. Mr Roberts, his English master at the Cathedral School had said it showed promise and that he should take his time over writing it. Jackie liked English, even though Uncle Jem had said he should work harder over his arithmetic. He never got good marks for that.

Jackie had met his parents for the first time today although they had written to him often and he had seen photographs. He also had a younger brother and sister, who were twins. That was stranger, because he wasn’t the youngest Bettany anymore, but he was pleased about that. Being the youngest was horrid and the twins were welcome to it.

It was taking ages to pack everything, David and Sybil were supposed to be helping, but all their clothes were mixed up and nobody could remember who owned which books. Rosa had been called away by Marie and Auntie Madge and Mummy had gone to tea with Auntie Joey. Rix had told Jackie to go down and ask if they were to pack everything, or if they should leave some things here.

“Why would we?” Jackie had asked, worried that they might not be leaving after all.

“You’re still going to school here, you might come here for exeats.” Rix had been impatient. “Don’t start howling, there isn’t time, just go and ask, there’s a good kid.”

So he had come downstairs, only to find that he would have to wait; Rix would say things if he went back to the bedroom they shared with David without the necessary information.

Uncle Jem spoke loudly, and so did Daddy. Jackie stuffed his fingers in his ears, but he could still hear, and it was interrupting his imaginings about his story.

“They’re good kids, the girls have had an excellent report from Nell Wilson.” There was a rustle of papers and Jackie could hear that his father sounded pleased, even though Peggy and Bride always had good reports. He wondered idly what his was like. His housemaster had said it was decent and that he should think about trying for an academic scholarship to Winchester when the time came, but then Mr Leiden wasn’t as critical as his uncle.

“I’m glad Dad’s all right,” Maeve said, on Saturday, as they sat down for afternoon tea at Brentford Hall. It was just the four adults; Maeve, Freddie, John and Daniel and the two little girls, Lucy and Annabelle. They were blonde, like their father, who did indeed bear no resemblance to his dark-haired cousin. “What a horrid shock it was.”

“Maurice says he’s looking to take on someone else to do some of the work,” John said.

“He should have done that years ago. What’s that, darling, more milk? Here you are, drink it nicely. Daniel, would you speak to Daddy? He might listen to you.”

“I can do,” Daniel replied. “Which day am I taking the girls?”

“Friday, you said. Are you sure? I know they look like angels without wings, but looks can be deceptive.”

“Where are we going, Daniel? Can we go to the park, please?”

“The zoo!” Annabelle added, nearly knocking over the milk. “An’ Uncle John, you come too!”

“Uncle John might be busy,” their father said, laughing.

“I’m supposed to be looking after your cousins,” John smiled as Annabelle thrust her plump little hand into his.

“Nasty boys,” Lucy screwed up her pretty face.

“No, come with us, please, Uncle John,” Annabelle pleaded.

“Perhaps you could both team up?” Freddie said. “Push her off if she starts climbing over you,” he added to his brother-in-law.

“We could do, if you wanted,” Daniel said. “I was going to take them to Paignton, to the zoo.”

“Zoo!” squealed Annabelle the irrepressible. “But no nasty boys, please, Cousin Daniel, they’re not allowed.”

“And the Princess lived happily ever after,” John finished his story quietly, the girls were almost asleep.

“That’s so nice, John,” Maeve said from the doorway. “Listen, I’ve got some news. It’s not a secret but we haven’t told anyone yet. I’m going to have another baby early next year. I’ll tell everyone after this funeral for Mary-Lou’s father.”

“That’s great news, I’m pleased for you. My kid sister, proud mamma of three…” John looked at her, fondly. “And Maurice has a girlfriend too, I hear.”

“Oh yes, it looks like he’s settling down.”

“Just me left then,” John smiled, before she could say it.

“I wasn’t going to say that,” Maeve said, tucking Annabelle in. “It’s different for you, you’re away all the time. When you decide to retire, let me know. I’ve got hundreds of friends who are desperate enough to date one of my brothers.”

John laughed, “Thank you, I’ll bear that in mind.”

“Do you mind awfully about joining up with Daniel on Friday?”

“No, it makes sense. Mary-Lou wants to get everything ready for the funeral on Saturday, so I said I’d take the kids out of the way.”

“Are you going to the funeral?” Maeve asked, and John nodded.

“I haven’t been to one since – well, you know,” she said, quietly, and he reached out to take her hand.

Now they were talking about Rix wanting to be a doctor. Jackie sighed, wishing his daddy would hurry up. He was just screwing up his courage to knock on the door when he heard something that made him pause, forget that eavesdropping was wrong, and listen with all his ears.

John drove to the zoo in Rix's car, with the triplets in the back. He already had a headache. He sighed as they squabbled in the back seat. It was a hot day and they were crotchety and so, he reflected, was he.

"Stupid idea," he muttered, as he pulled into the car park and looked around for Daniel and his nieces.

They weren’t long however, and Daniel had already bought the tickets.

“What do you want to see first?” Daniel asked the children, who of course all wanted to see different things.

It's not really a cliff *g*

“Penguins first, then the lions, then we can see the monkeys.” John took charge and shepherded the children in front of him. “Then we can have lunch and go and see everything else you want to see. Is that all right with you, Dr Lyndhurst?”

“Fine, thank you… Look, won’t you call me Daniel?”

“Of course,” John replied, politely.

“Can we see the snakes please?” Alex clamoured for his uncle’s attention. “An’ the lizards.”

“After lunch, I think. What would you like to see, Tom?” John turned to the youngest triplet, who was holding his hand.

“I want to see the tigers,” Tom said, eagerly. “Daddy said they come from India. Granny and Grandpa lived in India didn’t they, Uncle? Do you think Grandpa saw tigers?”

“I don’t know - you’ll have to ask him. I don’t think they have tigers here, Tom. It’s not a large zoo. Look out for a zoo keeper and I’ll ask him, OK?”

“Why don’t they have tigers in England? Is it too cold? How do they live in the zoo if it’s too cold?” Alex carried on with the questions, pulling at his uncle’s arm.

“Uncle John!” James bellowed, right down John’s ear. “Look, LOOK! AN ELEPHANT!”

The children all broke away and ran towards the elephant house, leaving John and Daniel alone. Daniel laughed.

“They’re exhausting, aren’t they?” he said. “Maybe we can distract them with ice-cream.”

“You’re very good with them,” John said, a touch enviously.

“Well, I do work with kids, remember.” Daniel replied. “Your brother asked me to look at Tom today and find out about his nightmares.”

“Oh yes,” John looked over at Thomas, who was talking about the elephants, just as excited as the others. “Poor little Tom.”

*

The children enjoyed their morning hugely, and were almost reluctant to leave the animals for lunch in the cafeteria. The excitement of having to take trays and choose their own meal won them over, however, and the seven of them settled down to eat.

The day had gotten progressively hotter and cool drinks were very welcome.

“Can we take a present for Mummy?” Lucy asked. “She might like a monkey. Will you ask the man, please?”

“No, sweetheart, the monkeys need to live in the zoo. They wouldn’t like it at home.” Daniel said, trying not to laugh. “Besides, your mummy might not like a monkey.”

“She said I was a monkey,” Annabelle said, climbing onto his lap. “So she might like it,”

“You can’t have a monkey at home, you’re silly,” James said, chocolate all around his mouth.

“Shush. We can ask her when we go home, can’t we,” John said, mopping up spilt lemonade.

“If Auntie Maeve wants a monkey, can I take Mummy something?” Tom asked. “She might like an elephant.”

“I think the zoo animals have to stay where they are,” John said, providing more chocolate biscuits to distract them.

“Mummy’s in London, she can go to the zoo there. Can we go to London?”

“Maybe one day.”

“Can we see your ship? Please!”

“She’s in Portsmouth, not London. But maybe, we’ll see. If you’re good.”

“We’re always good,” Lucy interjected.

“Why don’t you go outside and play on the swings?” Daniel suggested. “We can see you from here.”

The two of them laughed together, once the children had gone and afterwards the last of the tension between them seemed to have gone.

“Annabelle is like Maeve was. She always had an answer for everything, and Maurice – you know him, don’t you? – he never knew the meaning of the word tact.” They were preparing to leave and collect the children, but the conversation had been good. John was wondering if they could become friends and realising how much he would like it if they did.

“She’s not like her mother in looks though, oh she’s a pretty kid, but Maeve’s very beautiful.” Daniel said, clearing up the table.

“Do you think she’s beautiful?” John asked.

“Oh, yes, she’s lovely.” Daniel carried on, distracted by his work, “You’re very much like her, you know, apart from your colouring.”

“What did you say?” John couldn't pursue it, having noticed someone enter the cafeteria; someone he would rather not have seen, and who had seen him also and was approaching, an uncomfortable expression on his face.

“I thought it was you, Jack,” the man remarked with a small smile. He glanced at Daniel, then back over his shoulder. “How are you? They told me you were ill.”

“I’m fine. How are you, I didn’t know you were on leave.” John caught Daniel’s eye, “Dr Lyndhurst, this is Commander Keeler.”

“How do you do,” Commander Keeler nodded, but his manner was curt. Daniel said a word or two, then excused himself, leaving them to talk.

“Where’s Uncle John?” Lucy asked, as he met up with them.

“He’s talking to a friend.” Daniel said, looking back into the canteen. John’s body language wasn’t quite right, he looked uncomfortable, though maybe that was because he, Daniel, had said such a stupid thing.

“The Reptile House is this way,” John said, when he joined them, less than five minutes later.

“Who was that man, Uncle John?” Alex asked.

“Nobody, just someone from the Service. Come here, your shoelace is undone.”
John attended to it while Daniel glanced back at the cafeteria. Cdr Keeler was now with a woman and two small children.

“Snakes and lizards, do you like those, Lucy?” John was determinedly cheerful. Lucy shook her head and wrinkled her nose, and he laughed and took hold of her hand.

“Is he on your ship?” Alex persisted, being a curious child, and especially sensitive to when people were trying to evade questions.

“No he isn’t,” John said, “Come on Alex, I don’t want to talk about the Navy today, I want to enjoy my holidays.” Unconsciously, he pulled the cuff of his sleeve down to cover his wrist.

I'm guessing Cmmdr Keeler calls him Jack because they're close. And that their closeness is why John was upset to see him.

Daniel Lyndhurst sat in the drawing room in his Devonshire house. It was late and the case notes he was reading did not hold his interest. With a sigh, he laid them to one side.

Above him, the floorboards creaked. He was used to that; this was a house that had its ghosts, after all. He should telephone Nick Garden, his solicitor, about selling it, but he knew he wouldn’t. That would rake up a good many things that needed to stay buried. Or maybe he was overreacting, would anyone even care nowadays? But Freddie didn’t like to talk about it, even now. He stood up, needing to break this chain of thought, which he knew could go on for hours.

Thanks for the comments Smile

Mary-Lou had decided to hold the funeral for her father at Howells. The Reverend Ernest Howell would give a brief sermon and then Professor Trelawney would be laid to rest in the village churchyard, next to his wife and mother.

It was going to be another warm day. The children were not attending; Rosa, who was now David’s housekeeper, would look after them at the Round House.

Mary-Lou sat on the front pew, with Verity and Alan Trevor and her own husband next to her. John found himself next to Lida Olsen, who was there alone. David sat on his other side, and spent most of the short service glancing across the aisle at Gwensi Howell, his interest quite obvious to everyone but Gwensi herself.

John concentrated on the order of service, thinking about other funerals he had attended, most of which in uniform. The dark suit and tie he was wearing had been borrowed from David, most of his belongings were still scattered across Devonshire, most at the Quadrant, some in Portsmouth and some in his cabin of the HMS Commitment. He looked up as Ernest Howell announced the final prayers, and caught his eye.

He had known Ernest’s nephew, Rhys, who had been at Dartmouth with him, Rhys had been killed in China only two – no, three – years ago. There had been a memorial service. The first of many. He and Rhys had been good friends. And of course, Peggy’s funeral… perhaps it hadn’t been such a good idea to attend this one. Judging from the expression on his mother’s face, she was thinking the same thing.

He started, as Lida put her small, soft hand into his. “Maybe after this, you could come back to my house?” she whispered. “Klaus is away and the children are with a friend. We could be quite alone.”

“No,” he pulled away from her grasp, shocked. “I’m sorry…”

“What’s the matter?” David murmured, looking over. Lida merely tossed her glossy hair back over her shoulders and smiled at him.

“Nothing,” John muttered, wondering if he had misunderstood. She was married, and expecting a child… He couldn’t wait for the service to finish, and escape outside into the sunshine.

“What’s wrong with you?” David hissed, but luckily they were called to stand for the final hymn.

“John – how are you? It’s been too long,” Primula was waiting for him by the door of the church as they followed the coffin outside. Mary-Lou looked solemn, but dry-eyed, as she had told her husband that morning, she couldn’t grieve for a man she’d never really known, although she was proud of him and grateful that she could give him a proper burial. She had read a brief eulogy, and Liam Cameron, the son of one of the ill-fated expedition’s leaders, had also said a few words, praising Professor Alexander Trelawney’s bravery.

“It’s fantastic to see you,” John hugged her, feeling Lida’s eyes on him and noticing the ostentatious way she moved over to speak to David. He had probably been dreadfully rude, and had misunderstood her offer completely, but she seemed a very odd woman.

“You look terrible,” Primula said. They were still close and wrote to each often, John was godfather to her eldest son, so he didn’t take offence at her concern.

“I’ll speak to you later,” he said, taking her arm, “When we can get away.”

“Good. I haven’t brought the children, and Nick’s working today. We can have a really good talk.”

The burial was brief and afterwards the funeral party walked the short distance back to Carn Beg.

“What’s this about a Medical Board?” David asked John, when they were alone. “Mary-Lou said you’d been ill.”

“It’s just a formality,” John fibbed, looking around for Primula. She had disappeared for the moment, however.

“If you want to talk about anything in confidence,” David offered, “No? Well, I’ll leave the offer open.”

“Thanks,” John put his empty teacup down and decided he might as well ask. “David, do you know if Dr Lyndhurst is coming here today?”

“Nope, haven’t a clue. Why?”

“I just wondered… Rix said he was going to the church, but I didn’t see him.”

“Don’t worry, I don’t expect he’ll turn up now. People are already starting to drift away. Don’t pay any attention to him if he’s upsetting you.”

“Oh no, it wasn’t that, he’s been quite decent to me. Don’t you like him?”

“Not particularly. Oh, that’s probably a bit strong. He’s an acquaintance, that’s all. I don’t know him very well.”

“I thought you all trained together.”

“Well, that’s the thing, I’ve known him for years, but I don’t think I know anything about him. He’s never mentioned anything personal about himself, or his family, we only ever discuss medical things. Why do you want to know, anyway?”

“No reason… Have you seen Primula?”

“Talking to Gwensi Howell,” David sat down on the chesterfield and stretched. “I’d better head back to the San. Did you hear Dad and Mother are coming home for a visit? I’d better get on to the twins and tell them to come home.”

“When are they coming?” John asked.

“October, I think. I’ve got Mum’s letter here if you want to read it. Will you be here then?”

John shook his head, “I’ll have gone back.”

“Mmm.” David was watching Gwensi with interest and no longer listening.

“I phoned Nick, he’s got to see one of his most important clients on Friday, but if you don’t mind him maybe joining us for dinner, then we’d love to have you stay for the weekend,” Primula smiled. “Please do come, John, the boys would love to see you.”

“I’d love to. Who’s the important client?” John asked.

“Some old Viscount. Nick does some of the leasing of his estate, it’s not far from where we live. He probably won’t join us anyway and Nick will be free all Saturday.”

“Sounds great.” John was pleased; it would be a change and would take his mind of the forthcoming medical board.

“Should I ask Rix and Mary-Lou if they’d like to join us? And David?” Primula asked. “I can if you like, but if you’d prefer to be quiet, then that’s fine. I was forgetting you’d been ill.”

“I don’t mind, I've not really been ill..."

“No, I think just us. I can see them any time, after all.” Primula reconsidered. “When did you last come to see us, anyway?”

"Four years ago," John admitted. "It was Robert's christening."

"That's four and a half years. Don't they give you leave?" Primula smiled. "He's longing to meet you properly after your letters.”

"They don't tend to give me much leave... Anyway, I've got just under four weeks left, then I'm in Portsmouth until October.”

“Lovely… Oh dear, look at the time! I must go, I’ve left the boys with a neighbour but I daren’t be too late back. So – I’ll see you on Friday, then. I’m looking forward to it.”

“Can I borrow your car?” John asked his brother. “For the weekend, I mean.”

“I’m taking Mary-Lou to London on Saturday.” Rix pointed out. “Sorry. I can drive you to Primula’s if you want though.”

“No, it’s all right. Don’t worry. I’ll ask Dad…”

“Take mine,” David offered, searching through his belongings for his keys. “I’ve just filled the tank.”

“Are you sure?” John looked out of the window at David’s handsome car. “Won’t you need it?”

“No, I don’t expect so.” David stretched lazily on the sofa. The three of them were sat in the drawing room of Carn Beg. John had three weeks of his leave left, and the medical board in eight days’ time, which he was anxious about. The depression of the last few months had lifted slightly under the treatment he had received and now he was starting to realise that he might not be given the opportunity to go back to naval life. “Just bring it back in one piece, that’s all I ask,” he added.

“Thank you,” John took the keys.

“Maybe I’ll come down and see Prim and the kids over the weekend,” David said, considering. “I’ve got to go to London this evening for a dinner, if I stay at my club and get the train on Saturday morning… Would you mind?”

“Why would I mind?” John found that he did mind, but he couldn’t say anything else after David’s generosity.

“I’ll see. I might have other plans,” replied his cousin, flicking through his diary.

“Very mysterious,” Rix observed, filling in a crossword clue. “Plans with a woman, maybe?”

“Oh, no,” David said, too quickly. “Anyway, tell Prim I might pop down for the day, won’t you? Have a good time.”

“I will do – bye. Bye Rix.” John escaped, said goodbye to his nephews and sister-in-law, who were in the garden, and drove off in the sports car.

Primula’s house was small, more of a large cottage really, but pretty, with pink roses growing around the doorway. John knocked and waited, Primula’s oldest son opened the door.

“Hello, Nicholas, is your mother in?” John grinned at the eight year-old, who was tall for his age but resembled his blonde mother. “Or your dad, maybe?”

“Uncle John?” Nicholas asked cautiously.

“That’s right,” John picked up his weekend bag. “It’s great to see you.”

“John! Hello!” Primula hugged him. “Come on, Nicky, don’t be shy, it’s only your Uncle John. Where’s Robert?”

After the greetings and introductions – Robert was now nearly five years old, instead of the four week-old baby he had been when John had last seen him – they went into the welcoming kitchen and Primula explained that her husband had been delayed in the office.

“Anyway, the good news is that he doesn’t have to work tomorrow at all, nor late this evening. He should be home around six. We thought we could go down to the beach tomorrow, the boys love it and we don’t go often enough. Is that OK?”

“Sounds great. How is Nick, anyway?”

“Tired – you know his father died last year, I can’t remember if I told you actually – and he’s taken on a lot of new clients recently. Still, he has a new partner, who’s very good, and she’s taken over a lot of the estate work they do and we’ve finally got Daddy back in the evenings, haven’t we, Rob?”

Robert nodded his blond head, shyly. “It’s nice,” he said.

“Daddy’s teaching us cricket,” Nicholas remarked. “Rob’s too young for it yet, but I can bat now and bowl – sort of.”

“Excellent, if the weather holds we’ll have to have a game.” John looked out through the window, but the sun was still shining.

The sun had long set before Nick Garden arrived home; he started apologising before he was even through the door.

“Sorry, sorry, sorry…” he smiled at his wife. “Where are the boys?”

“In bed, of course. Nick, you are awful, you knew John was here…”

“Hi John. Sorry, darling. I had to go over some papers and it took longer than we thought.” Nick pulled off his tie. “I’m starving, is there any of your wonderful dinner left?”

“It’s in the oven – I hope for your sake it’s still edible!” Primula said, her brief annoyance fading when faced with the full force of her husband’s charm.

“I’m sure it will be delicious,” Nick replied, opening his briefcase and spreading papers everywhere. “I found something you might be interested in, John. Well, Estelle found it really, my new partner. She’s very good – trusts and estates practitioner. Do you remember you wanted something to invest in?”

“Oh, Nick, no! Not over dinner, save it for tomorrow, please?” Primula had returned and swept all the papers up into a pile, ignoring her husband’s protests. “It’s a good job you’re family, John, and not a guest. What happened to Viscount Etherleigh, anyway?”

“He’s taken rather a shine to Estelle.” Nick replied, tucking into his overdue meal. “He’s gone off to her flat to help her put paintings up. He wouldn’t know one end of a picture hook from the other, but at least you could have your meal in peace. He’s as deaf as a post – he must be in his late seventies now…”

John had let his attention wander to the framed photographs on the mantelpiece. Primula looked very young in her wedding photograph. She also had one of him in his uniform that his mother also had, it had been taken about ten years ago. As he looked along the mantelpiece, he noticed another photo, a large family group that he wasn’t in.

“Where was this?” he asked, breaking into Nick’s banter.

“Oh – the Round House, I think. It was Uncle Jem’s birthday.” Primula looked sympathetic, but then she didn’t realise how much he hated that type of family gathering and the enforced false cheerfulness of it all.

No, he told himself, he would hate to leave the Navy and it would take a great deal to make him do so. John made up his mind to get Drs Forrest and Lyndhurst to convince Walsh and Bailey and the others that he would be fit to go back as soon as possible.

I'm totally spamming the board today out of boredom... Here's some more. Thanks for the comments

“Are you sure?” Daniel asked. It wasn’t a very good line and John was struggling to get across what he wanted to say without any of the Garden family hearing. "You want to go back in a fortnight? You're sure you don't want a longer break?"

“Yes, of course. I want to go back, I told you that was what I wanted.”

“Did you?"

“No, I didn’t, you’re right. Sorry. But I told Dr Forrest. He said you were going to add a recommendation that I was fit to go back…”

“Why the urgency?” Daniel was in his study, in his London flat. Balancing the receiver under his ear, he managed to fasten his tie at last. He had a dinner engagement that he was not looking forward to and which was souring his mood. “I’ll need to see Dr Forrest’s notes and speak to him. I can’t confirm anything at the moment.”

“I see.” John sat down on the bottom stair. “I know I did a stupid thing, but I’m not going to do anything like it again. I want to go back and I know I’m ready.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m staying with Primula, in Everleigh – it’s in Devonshire – until Sunday.”

“I know it. I’m in Candlebury on Sunday. If Dr Forrest is free…”

“Yes. I’ve got David’s car, I could get there easily…”

“Give me your number there and I’ll see what I can do,” Daniel said. “We can do our best to make sure your wishes are taken into account, if you’re sure it’s what you do want.”

“Thank you, I do appreciate it…” but the line had disconnected at last and the operator had no success in making the reconnection.

“Aren’t you bathing?” Primula asked, as they sat on the beach. It had taken an hour in the car to read the coast. Etherleigh was a fair way inland.

“No, maybe later,” John said, looking over the sea, where Nick and the two children were splashing. “Does Nick always work such long hours?”

“Yes, it’s been worse since his father died – and we’ve had some money worries. Nick nearly lost the practice because his father hadn’t been managing the money very well. Still, we’ve come through it,” Primula said, philosophically. “We see a lot more of him now.”

“You should have told me, I could have lent you money.”

“We didn’t tell anyone and I certainly wouldn’t have taken your money.”

“It’s no use to me, I don’t have anything to spend it on, not real expenses like running a house or a business. It just goes into the bank every month when I’m away. Tell me if you do need anything, won’t you? You’re my best friend, Prim, and I’d want to help.”

“Thank you,” Primula was touched. “Shall we go for a walk? I want to collect sea shells.”

He laughed and held out an arm to help her to her feet. His sleeve had ridden up and she could see the blue ink of his tattoo, on the inside of his arm, just below the elbow. He’d had that for years. What was new was the jagged scar on his wrist.

“John?” she asked, when they were away from the other sunbathers and families. “What happened?

“What?” he asked, but she had pushed up his sleeve.

“It’s not as bad as you think,” he prevaricated. “A lapse of judgement, I suppose.”

“Oh, John, please don’t tell me you tried… why?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“I thought I was your best friend? If you can’t tell me, who can you tell?”

“There’s nothing to tell. I’m fine. I will be fine. I’m seeing someone to talk about things. I was just a bit depressed, but things are better now. See, you don’t tell me things and I don’t tell you things.”

“Don’t be like that, please. I’m not attacking you, I’m just worried about you. Does anyone else know?”

“Rix does, but no-one else.” John’s voice lost its edge. “I’m sorry. It’s just such a mess. Was such a mess.”

“But it’s better now?”

“Yes, honestly. I’ve got my medical board next week, then I’ll go back and everything will be fine.”

“Good… that’s good,” Primula looked doubtful. “I won’t mention it to anyone if you don’t want me to.”

“Thanks,” John said, as Nick and the children joined them.

“This is my daughter, Caitlin.” Dr Forrest introduced the small girl. “I couldn’t find anyone to babysit, I’m afraid.”

“Hello, Caitlin,” John said.

“Hello,” she replied, shyly.

“Hi Katy,” Daniel said, to whom Caitlin was an old friend. “Mrs Collins is in the kitchen and I think she’s been baking. I’ll take you to her, if you like.”

“Yes please, Uncle Daniel,” Caitlin said, with a quick smile that lit up her rather solemn little face and went with him, slipping her hand into his.

“You look worried,” Dr Forrest said, when he and John were alone.

“I think it’s just starting to sink in that they might not let me go back.” John admitted.

“Why wouldn’t they?” Toby sat down. “I think you’ve made great progress, and I spoke to – Captain Walsh, is it? – last week and he seemed to think this meeting was just a formality.”

“Captain Walsh said that?”

“Yes, he said you were too good to lose.”

“He’s not the only one there, though. They’ll take a majority decision.” John was pessimistic.

“Cheer up, we’ll do the best we can. Dr Lyndhurst is brilliant. Is it very formal?”

“Yes, it will be. All uniforms and salutes. I’m sorry to take up your Sunday.”

“No, it’s no problem. Caitlin loves going wherever she gets spoilt rotten. I do like Devonshire. Do you know it at all?”

“My parents live on the coast, not far from Bideford.”

“I used to have a friend – do you know, the penny’s dropped. You must be related to Richard Bettany. His brother? He said he had a younger brother in the Navy. We used to work together, before I flunked my exams. Yes– I was sorry to hear about your sister.”

“Yes… I should have told you about her, I suppose.”

Toby’s expression told him that he should have, however he merely continued with pleasantries. “I haven’t see Richard for years. They had triplets, didn’t they?”

“Yes, they’re five now,” John said, as Daniel came back.

“Shall we start?” he suggested, sitting down and producing notes. “This is what I’m planning to say on your behalf.”

John sat and listened to the two of them talking, occasionally he would answer a question and the discussions would veer off into different directions.

“That seems to be everything then,” Toby said, eventually, shuffling papers together.

“I suppose so.” Daniel looked up, but John was right at the other end of the enormous dining room, looking at the portraits. He lowered his voice. “I’d be happier if I knew why he did it.”

“I thought you said minor nervous trouble, a breakdown…”

“Yes, obviously, but I think it’s been building up for a time, and something happened to make him slash his wrists. A catalyst.”

“But he hasn't told you."

“He might. Anyway… John?”

“Yes?”

“Are you staying for lunch with us? You’re very welcome.”

“If it’s no trouble… Thank you, I’d be pleased to.” John came back over to them.

“I’d better go and find Madam.” Toby said, leaving them alone.

“Could I see the grounds?” John asked.

“Of course, let me give you the tour,” Daniel offered. “Well, a short tour. Some of the gardens are inaccessible.”

“Why?” John asked, as they went outside.

“Overgrown. Some are walled gardens and I don’t know where the keys are.”

“What, like in The Secret Garden? Why don’t you get a gardener?” John glanced at the weeds and frowned. “It could be gorgeous out here.”

“I’ve got other concerns at the moment. We could walk to the copse?” Daniel suggested, politely.

“OK,” John moderated his pace a little to accommodate his companion. The views across the estate were magnificent and he reflected again that it was a shame it had been so neglected. Still, it was none of his business.

The grounds were enormous. John squinted into the sun to see a collection of caravans in the far distance,

“What’s that?” he asked, relaxing a little.

“Gypsies. They come here every summer. We can go closer if you like – there’s a church just beyond – can you see the spire?”

“Yes, I saw it as I drove up. Do you use it?”

“Not now. Come on, we’ll walk over to it. Don’t worry about the camp, they know who I am.”

“Why do they come here?” John asked, as they walked past. Small children, who had been occupied with a game, stared at them.

“They’ve been coming here for years,” Daniel shrugged, raising a hand in greeting. One of the men, stood around talking, grinned and waved back.

“Don’t you mind them being on your land?” John asked.

“No,” Daniel said, and John detected a flicker of amusement at all the questions. “They don’t bother me and I don’t bother them.”

“What do they do here?”

“I suspect they take some of the deer, but then I can’t exactly hunt myself and I don’t care.” Daniel shielded his eyes from the sun. “I’ll sell this place eventually. I’ve sold some of the land to your father – we border your lands, you know.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“Only partly, I think. Anyway, this is the church. I think it’s sixteenth century, I’m told it’s older than the house…”

“Can we see inside?”

“I don’t think – no, hang on,” Daniel searched his pockets and produced a collection of keys. The third unlocked the door and it creaked as he pushed it open. “Careful – some of the floor is rotten.”

It was tiny and the birds and mice had made their mark; but it had been attractive once, and the stained glass windows, once John had removed some of the dust with his handkerchief, were revealed to be beautiful.

“Was it always like this?” John asked, as they headed back to the house.

“No, when I was a small kid it was a working estate. The gardens were – well, I’m told they were quite famous. Shall we head back? I expect lunch will be ready.”

“Do you think you will sell it?”

“I doubt anyone would buy it – no-one wants these old houses anymore. The land, maybe, one could build on it.”

“I’d buy it – if I had the cash. I think it’s beautiful.” Slightly embarrassed to have said so much, John changed the subject.

“Why is that caravan so far away from the others?” he asked.

“It’s owned by a woman who has the Second Sight. Maybe that’s why.”

“Really? How do you know?”

“Everyone knows. She tells fortunes, my mother used to go to her. Want to hear yours?”

“No. Thank you.”

“No problem, it’s not for everyone.” Daniel smiled.

“What did she tell your mother?”

“I don’t know, she didn’t tell me. The gypsies have been coming here since before the war, you know. It’s only a bit of fun, isn’t it? I mean, people don’t really have second sight do they?” Daniel was contemptuous.

“There’s only one way to find out.”

John started to regret his throwaway comment as soon Daniel knocked on the door of the shabby caravan, but pride meant he couldn’t back down now. He shifted his reservations firmly to the back of his mind. He was only being superstitious, a typical sailor. Rix and David would laugh.

The caravan was untidy, and dark. It was stuffy and smelt overpoweringly of incense and strong perfume.

The woman was elderly, and she listened to Daniel, then glanced over at the doorway, muttering. She nodded, and motioned him forward.

“You go first,” John said, instantly regretting showing weakness.

“OK,” Daniel was cheerfully unconcerned.

“I’ll wait outside.”

“Don’t worry, it’s fine,” Daniel said. “You can sit here.”

“Yes, sit,” the gypsy commanded, and John did so.

He may well remember what it looked like, but as a child might not have been aware that they were known 'throughout the land'.

She certainly gave a good performance, her comments were cryptic and the flow of her worlds slightly hypnotic. She told Daniel he would find his heart’s desire and he laughed. It was clear he wasn’t going to take it seriously. John could barely concentrate, it was stifling inside the caravan and he longed to be outside in the fresh air and sunshine. His attention drifted, thinking yet again about what they would say to him in London. Would they let him go back and under what terms?

It seemed mad to ask this wrinkled old woman questions like that, how would she know what the answers were. Her next words were sharper, and broke through his reverie.

“I know you don’t believe in the Sight,” she looked up at him, shrewdly. “Your mother, she would come and see me.”

“I know she did.”

“She did not believe me either, but I warned her. I warned her what would happen!”

Daniel stood up, “I think we can leave it there,” he said. “Thank you. Do you still want to waste your money?” he added, to John, and it was clear that whatever the old woman had been hinting at, the mention of his mother had rattled him.

“I said I would, if you would,” John tried to smile, to diffuse the tension that had suddenly built in the small, dark caravan.

“Yes, come, my dear, sit nearer,” she took his hand and studied his palm critically, and frowned.

“You are a traveller,” she crooned, looking up at him with her small, dark eyes. “I can see the sea in your hand. And you have had some difficult journeys, have you?” She looked at the crimson scarring. “You should share your secrets, child. Here,” she went through her skirts and produced a grubby bottle of lotion. “Use this – it will help.”

“I – thank you,” John took it, but she grasped his wrist and refused to let go. “I see danger,” she whispered. “You must be careful – so careful! At sea, yes.”

“What sort of danger?” John asked, transfixed as she froze, seeming to go into some kind of trance. She muttered something in Romany.

“I see two ships,” she added, “and a perilous time. Waves – Wind - Death… So much death if you do not act,” she let go of his hand, as though scalded. She had gone quite pale. "Dosta," she said, quietly. “Enough. You must go. I have no more to see.”

“There must be more…” John was dismayed. “You can’t say something like that and not tell me… Is it a ship going down? Is that what you saw?”

“She didn’t see anything.” Daniel said quietly, his voice broke the tension and shifted them back to ordinariness. “Come on, let’s go.”

“Your sister is at peace,” she said, stopping them in their tracks. “Tell your mother it is so. Now go – and don’t come back.”

She slammed the door shut, leaving them staring at each other in shock.

“It’s a trick. It’s not real. How could it be real?” Daniel’s patience was wearing thin. They had discussed it all through lunch and now, as the sun was setting over the estate grounds and filling the drawing room with scarlet light, they were still arguing over what she had said. “She made it all up.”

“How did she know I was in the Navy?” John asked. “I didn’t tell her, did you?”

“What’s that on your arm?” Daniel snapped. “No, I’m sorry. It’s just so ridiculous, this is a ridiculous conversation. It’s the twentieth century. There’s no such thing as second sight. She’s a fraud.”

“I suppose she might have seen it,” John glanced at the tattoo on the inside of his arm. “But - Peggy?”

“She must know all the local news. She could easily have heard of it. All the women from the village used to visit her.” Daniel’s brow cleared. “Of course that’s it. She goes into the village as well, I’ve seen her there. Most people know your family.”

“But how did she know it was my family?”

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore. It’s ludicrous.”

“All right,” John sat back down. “You’re right, I know. It was just…”

“Eerie. Yes, I know. But I doubt there’s any truth in it, she was just a good actress.” Daniel smiled, at last. “Don’t worry about it. Now, I’ll see you in London, I suppose. Are you staying with Con and Frank?”

“I’ll sort something out.” John was relieved that they had changed the subject at long last.

He parked David’s car carefully, it had cost him a small fortune to have it filled up with petrol in Bideford. The Quadrant’s windows were all open, every light seemed to be on and he could hear pop music. Daphne or Maurice then. His father’s car was missing.

Loveday was just leaving as he arrived at the door.

“You made me jump,” she said in greeting.

“Sorry – Loveday, have you ever been to a fortune-teller?”

“A fortune-teller? No, why would I waste my money.” Loveday snorted. “There’s meant to be one up by Candlebury way apparently.”

“I know. Do you know if Cook’s ever gone to see her?”

“I can’t imagine it, can you, dear?” Loveday laughed. “ Cook’s far too sensible for that sort of nonsense. I’d better run or I’ll be late. See you tomorrow.”

“Bye,” John closed the front door after her.

Maurice and Daphne were together in her bedroom, sitting on the floor with records spread around them.

“John! David’s taken Mummy and Daddy out to evening service in Dad’s car. Can you take me out in it tomorrow? You said you’d teach me how to drive.” Daphne said, immediately.

“I’ll see.”

“That means you won’t. Oh come on, you did promise!” Daphne wheedled. “I’m going to need to know how to drive for art school.”

“Art school?”

“I told you! I’ve got some prospectuses,” Daphne searched through her untidy bedroom, sending a small avalanche of magazines and other junk over, “Oops. Look, here. This one’s in Portsmouth, you could keep an eye on me and I could live away from home. I’ll tell Daddy that.”

“How can I keep an eye on you? I’ll be…” John stopped.

“Do you know where you’re going?” Maurice asked. “You could tell us, we wouldn’t tell anyone.”

“I don’t know officially,” Or if I’ll even be there at all. “Do they know you want to leave the Chalet School?”

“Stop changing the subject. No, I’m going to ask them when Daddy’s better. I thought I’d better have all the information to hand, then they can’t object. Don’t you have friends in Portsmouth who I could tell them about?”

“No. Where are the other colleges?”

“The only other one I like is in London. That’s my first choice, but even Portsmouth would be better than here. Armiford – no, I’d have to live with Rix and Mary-Lou and that would be the same as here…”

“Daphne, you’re sixteen years old. There’s no way on earth Dad would let you move to London on your own.” Maurice interjected, rolling his eyes at his brother.

“I could stay with Con.” Daphne responded, triumphantly. “So there.”

“They might let you do that,” John said, flicking through the brochure. “What does Con say?”

“Well, I haven’t asked her yet.” Daphne admitted. “But I don’t see why not. I could help her the babies – I could do the housework while I wasn’t in college.”

“How could she refuse?” Maurice asked, with an exaggerated glance around the disorderly bedroom. “You’re so good at it.”

John choked, hastily hiding behind the glossy pages of the prospectus.

“We could go out in David’s car now?” Daphne asked, with a scathing look at Maurice.

“I’ll take you out tomorrow morning in Dad’s car.” John said. “We could have a good two hours if you get up early.”

“Thank you!” she threw her arms around him and kissed him. “I knew you would.”

“You need to listen to me if you want to learn,” John snapped. “Take your foot off that accelerator and listen to what I’m saying.”

Daphne sighed and tossed her hair. “It’s not on the accelerator! It’s on the clutch thing.” She slid her foot from the pedal and the car lurched forward.

John shoved the gear stick into neutral, irritably. “You’re worse than Maeve was.”

“You’re just in a bad mood and you’re taking it out on me!” Daphne snarled back. “Anyway, Freddie’s taken me out before, on his land. He told me all about the gears already!”

“Put your foot on the clutch, then put the gears into first,” John ordered, ignoring her. “Then you can move off – slowly. See? That’s better.”

Daphne soon lost her scowls; driving was too exciting to sulk through. She changed into second gear, and soon got up to a decent speed along the lane.

“Can we go over to the cowsheds?” she suggested, as John leaned over to correct her steering. “I could drive Maurice back for lunch”

“All right – turn left – slower – brake, that’s right – hey, that’s not bad at all, you know.”

“I know,” Daphne smiled, confidently. "I told you so!"

“It’s OK. I’m sorry too.”

“If you really want to go to art school, I’ll speak to Dad if you like.”

“It’s just so awful being here. You don’t know how awful it is.”

“Daphne! Brake!” John leant over to grab the steering wheel, and Daphne, panicking, stepped hard on the wrong pedal. The car veered straight across the narrow lane, towards Maurice and the men who worked on the estate, who promptly dived in all directions out of the way, and narrowly missed the large sheds and several frightened cows, before colliding with the fence and coming to an abrupt stop.

Neither John nor Daphne had been wearing a seatbelt.

“Are you both all right?” Maurice demanded, yanking the driver’s door open. The car seemed to be full of blood. “Daph? John?”

“I’m all right,” Daphne eased herself out of the car. She was very pale, but seemed unhurt. “Oh, God, John, I’m sorry. Are you hurt?”

“I don’t think so.” John’s nose was bleeding. “I hit my head on the steering wheel.”

“Jake’s gone to the Trevarns’ cottage to phone the house.” One of the farm lads said, helping Daphne, who was shaking too much to stand. “Come on, Miss, come and sit down here.”

“Dad’s going to go mad.” John said, ignoring Maurice’s instructions to keep still and getting slowly out of the car.

Thanks for your comments Smile

John had decided to take the first London train from Sheepheys Junction, rather than stay overnight, however it had been delayed, of course, and he was now running late. He then had to dash across London to Greenwich and find somewhere to change into the uniform he had in his overnight bag.

He was sat in the corner of the compartment, ostensibly buried behind the newspaper, but really brooding over what would be happening later that afternoon. Perhaps he should have made some contingency plans. It would be too humiliating to have Captain Walsh offering to pull strings to get him a desk job somewhere. He would rather help Maurice on the estate.

David had patched him up after the accident and Daphne only had minor bruises, John himself, twisted at an awkward angle, had taken more of the impact. The car had gone straight to the garage in Bideford.

“Your nose isn’t broken,” David had said, calmly, “And you’re not concussed. You were lucky. Remind me not to lend Daph my car ever.”

“Is she all right?”

“She’ll be stiff tomorrow, but she’s fine. You’re going to have a lovely black eye. You’ve got something official on Monday, haven’t you? Well, arnica might help – I’ve got some somewhere.”

“Thanks.”

“No problem. I…” David went quiet, as he saw John’s uncovered arm. “What happened here?”

“It was an accident. It’s old.”

“Eight weeks old?” said David, shrewdly. “Let me see the other one.”

“It’s not that bad – I didn’t mean to do it.”

“I think you need to see someone about this. Or is this why you’ve got to go to London?”

John told him all about the Board, and about seeing Toby Forrest and Dr Lyndhurst. David listened until the end and nodded, looking serious for once.

“I wondered why you were over there all the time… That makes sense now. Well, as long as you’re talking it through with someone.”

“Don’t you like him?”

“Who, Lyndhurst? You’ve asked me that before. Why are you so interested in what I think about him? I told you, I don’t know him that well,” David paused. “He was Rix’s friend, not mine. He made that quite clear at St Thomas’.”

You can have a little more *g*

The taxi driver looked again at John’s face, before consenting to drive him from Paddington to Greenwich. “Been in a fight?” he laughed, before pulling out.

“No,” John said, miserably. He had already been dreading the Board, now the thought of having to go in there with his face so badly bruised was making him even more uncomfortable. He wondered what they would say, as looked at his watch again, aware that he was now very late. Dr Lyndhurst had said he would wait for him in a nearby café and he would have to change… He should have found the time to get his hair cut in Bideford, it had gotten very long over the summer… He made himself stop thinking about everything as the driver pulled up outside the café, and got out with his bag.

Daniel was sat in the corner, reading a newspaper and looking completely calm and unruffled, until he saw John’s impressive black eye. “Good grief,” he said, standing up, “Are you all right? What happened?”

“You should see the other man,” John joked, humourlessly. “No, Daphne crashed Dad’s car. I was giving her a driving lesson. God knows what they’ll make of it.”

“Is Daphne hurt?”

“No, she’s all right, just bruises and shock. I need to change – I’ll be right back.”

John stared at himself critically in the mirror of the Gents' before deciding his appearance would have to suffice. It felt strange to be back in uniform.

David was good about the scars.

”Should we go?” he asked Daniel, who looked up at him with a surprised expression.

“Go? Oh – yes, sorry.”

“Do I look a sight?”

“No – no. Not at all. I haven’t seen you in uniform before, that’s all.” Daniel smiled, briefly.

“Like I’m in dressing-up clothes? It’s going to be very formal.”

“No, not at all, It- You look fine. You got changed very quickly.”

“That’s Dartmouth, they didn’t let you hang around. We had to be from bed to parade ground in seven minutes,” John grinned. “And my sisters used to complain about their school. We’d better go – I want to get it over with.”

They arrived at the administrative offices of the Naval College with some minutes to spare, and were shown to a waiting room. Daniel dealt everything confidently while John thought back to David’s remarks of the evening of the accident. David has said the confidence was arrogance. John couldn’t decide.

“Captain Walsh, Commander Lawton, Commander Keeler, Surgeon-Commander Morris-Ward and Surgeon-Commander Bailey,” Daniel read from a list. “Do you know them all?”

John nodded, “Did you say Keeler?”

“Yes. Is he senior to you?”

“They’re all senior to me.” John sat down and ran his fingers over the brightly coloured decorations on his chest, an involuntary nervous gesture. “Lawton’s my commanding officer, if that’s what you mean.”

“What’s the worst they could do?”

“SNLR me. Chuck me out of the Service.” John said, carelessly.

“For an isolated suicide attempt?”

“I meant a medical discharge. I hate this waiting…”

“I think that’s unlikely. Your Captain sounded very positive when I spoke to him.”

John wasn’t left waiting too long. Commander Lawton came to accompany him to the room they would be using. John saluted him, very properly and Lawton responded, not commenting on his black eye.

Daniel sat in the room, listening to John answer the questions he was asked; and covertly studying the various body language in the room. Morris-Ward looked bored, Walsh quite anxious underneath his false joviality. John was tense. Lawton was frowning, as was the Navy surgeon, but it was the sixth officer, who was taking the minutes, who had caught Daniel’s attention as he was the man from the zoo, who had spoken to John in the cafeteria. He was frowning also, and would spend long moments staring into space rather than taking the notes he had been asked to write. Occasionally he would stare in a bemused manner at John, who seemed to be deliberately avoiding his gaze. It was all very curious. Daniel doodled on his notepad and considered it.

It all seemed very easy. Daniel suspected they would save any debate until after he and John had been dismissed.

“It’s going well,” he said, as they drank tea in the Council Chamber. “Don’t you think?”

“I think so,” John relaxed a little, and sat down on an antique chair. “Thanks for all your help.”

“You’re welcome. I hope it goes well for you.” Daniel looked up at the portrait above John’s head. “Debts. Or the end of a relationship,” he remarked, conversationally.

“I beg your pardon?”

“I was just thinking of the two most common reasons why people who aren’t ill attempt suicide. Who’s he? He looks a bit fierce.”

“What?

“I asked who that was, behind you.”

“No, I meant…”

“You’re not in debt, are you?”

“No,” John said, putting his teacup and saucer down on the table and twisting round to look at the painting on the wall. “That’s Samuel Hood. He was an admiral, in the eighteenth century. He was involved in the Seven Years’ War. Did you know Nelson said Hood was the greatest sea officer he had ever known?”

“I’m afraid I don’t know my history.” Daniel said, mildly.

“I do take your points, gentlemen, but I’m satisfied with these reports. We’ll draw a line under this whole business. Yes, Lewis, have you got something to say?”

“What if he does it again, sir?” Cdr Keeler said, pointedly.

“I’m confident he won’t.” Walsh said, irritably. “We’ve gone through all this and heard what the psychiatrist said. It was clearly a blip. Bettany’s service record speaks for itself.”

“If I may speak frankly, sir, and you know Lt Cdr Bettany and I have been friends for years, so I wouldn’t say this if I wasn’t concerned… if we are due to go out soon then it might be best for the Commitment to be deployed with the Camaraderie?” Keeler said, smoothly, naming his own vessel. “Just in case there are any more - blips.”

Really intrigued by Keeler's role in all this - could he be the one John split up from, if that's what's happened, or could he have found out that John was involved with someone else and intervened?

“Thank you, sir. I do appreciate it.”

“Good. Now, I’m giving your four weeks’ additional leave. McLaughlin is going to deal with the new ratings. Your ship’s dry-docked for the next fortnight anyway while they work on the hull.” Walsh leaned back in his chair, and produced his pipe. “Sit down,” he said, indicating the chair in front of his desk. Walsh's private office was full of dust and papers, John had to clear the chair before he could sit down.

“Yes, I heard about that. Are we still going to Rhodesia at the end of October?”

“I hope that’s an educated guess, lad.” Captain Walsh smiled. “Yes, that’s where you’ll go. Probably a little later – November - it seems a good time to have the engineers give the Commitment a good going-over."

“I do read the newspapers,” John grinned back.

“Thirteen months’ deployment, if the situation stays the same.”

“I won’t let you down, sir.” John half-stood up, preparing to salute and leave the Captain’s office. Walsh gestured for him to sit down again.

“You’ll flotilla with the HMS Camaraderie. No problems with that, I hope?” Walsh said.

“No. No, sir.”

Walsh nodded. “I didn’t think so and it should take the pressure off you a little. We’ll see how things go.”

“Thank you.”

“Right, enjoy your four weeks and I’ll see you in October.” Captain Walsh lit his pipe.

“John?”

He had forgotten Daniel, waiting for him and started when he heard his voice. He had been deep in thought.

“Sorry – Yes, I’m going back. In October. I’ve got another month’s leave.”

“Excellent. I’m glad it all worked out for you. Are you going back to Devonshire tonight?”

“No – I’ll get a hotel. I don’t feel like going home yet. Anyway – thanks for everything. I do appreciate it.”

“No problem. Did you want to share a taxi back into town? I’m going to -”

“Great, thanks. I’ll follow you out.” John had noticed Commander Keeler approaching.

“All right,” Daniel nodded and headed back to the entrance hall.

John turned slowly to see Lewis Keeler watching him. He saluted very properly, but his hand was shaking.
