This has been written for a while, but it seems so final, which put me off posting. However, que sera sera.
There are two parts, and here's the first.

“Mum?”
She opened her eyes reluctantly, dragging herself back from the enticing darkness to a world of pain. She focused on the person bending over the bed and a slow smile spread across her face. “Hello,” she said, her voice little more than a whisper. Her daughter smiled back through her tears, leaning down to kiss her cheek and hug her so gently it was as if she was made of porcelain. Now they were all here, she need wait no longer. She looked at them for a long moment, three beautiful women, all so different and yet all so dear to her. They had their own families now and they would support each other. They didn’t need her any longer.
She closed her eyes and let herself slip into the darkness again, into a world that was peaceful and quiet and free from the debilitating pain that had been her life recently. She knew someone was waiting there for her, someone she had not seen for such a long time. She knew he was there, she had heard his voice calling her, and now that she had seen her girls she was ready to be with him once more.

They had arranged to bury her in the peace and quiet of the ancient cemetery, in the shadow of the church where she had married their father so many years ago. It was a bitterly cold day, bringing to mind the words of the Christmas hymn so recently sung – ‘Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone.’ There was snow, too, and grey skies, all very appropriate for a funeral, she thought. For it was better to think about the weather, or Christmas, anything really to take her mind off the raw ache of her loss.
The coffin was carried to the graveside and a shivering young vicar spoke a few solemn words, but she heard none of them. Then they lifted the coffin one last time and lowered it into the hole in the ground, a hole that exactly replicated the void inside her. She had remained dry-eyed throughout the funeral service, even through the emotional eulogy delivered by her nephew, but the terrible finality of it all hit her as they began to throw earth into the grave.
With an anguished cry she turned to Antoine, burying her face against the rough material of his winter coat.
