I always had a soft spot for Grizel, I think EBD gave her a raw deal, so I was glad that Neil finally proposed, though I think any self-respecting feminist would hit him over the head with a frying pan to be on the receiving end of such a proposal.

This story is for Jennie because her comment made about this has inspired this drabble. (For anyone wanting to see the comment in full see Formal Discussions: The CS Reunion)

Grizel without stopping to think grabbed the teapot and hit Neil over the head and knocked him out cold. Neil fell and lay prostrate at her feet
"I can't believe that was your proposal," she seethed. "I have waited how many years and that is the best you can offer me?"
She sat down again not knowing what to say or do after that and surveyed Neil thoughtfully. She like Neil, she liked him a lot but his proposal leaved a lot to be desired. She had spent her entire life being independent, caring for herself. She had no family and as much as she loved certain friends she had never been the 'best friend.' She sighed, she could just see Joey's face at what she had done, but really, buying their house without consulting her and deciding what they were doing in that manner seemed to bring out the worst in her. She sighed again. Part of her would loved to be taken care of, to not have to do everything for herself but really, this was all too much! Joey returned "whistling like an intoxicated blackbird" that soon died with a squawk when she saw the seen before her. Grizel was sitting calmly down and Neil was lying out cold at her feet. She ran over madly,
"What happened?" she asked stunned, "I thought Neil..and you..Didn't you like him Grizel?" she asked helplessly.
"Oh yes," answered Grizel calmly, "I just didn't like his proposal."
Joey stood there looking (as one well known writer would put it) like a stranded codfish
"Didn't..like...his. Are you mad?" asked Joey
"Joey," said Grizel sensibly "I have waited how many years for this, I certainly don't want him trying to run my life and make all my decisions for me. The idea is for us to do it together. If he wants to map my whole life out for me without consulting me on any of it then perhaps we're not meant to be."
Joey sat down limply "I don't know what to say," she said, her mind wandering off to all the times Jack did just exactly that. "You're right Grizel," she said energetically sitting bolt upright, "I've let Jack do it for years, but if he thinks he can do it any longer, he has another thing coming." and the two women sat together waiting for Neil to recover.
Neil who had started to recover when Joey arrived realized he get no help from that quater opened his eyes.
"I take it that was a no," he said resignedly sitting up. He looked at both of them and felt mentally like he was back in school again. Joey had her best Head Girl meting out justice look and Grizel was serveying him like he had just crawled out from under a rock.
"I wouldn't say that," said Grizel thoughtfully, "It's a no only if you plan on making all the decisions for me for the rest of my life."
Neil looked thoughtful himself. "But I thought that's what all women wanted," he said, "at least a friend told me that women did."
"Who another man?" asked Joey, the scorn dripping from her voice.
"No," said Neil, "her name is Elinor. She said you would love a proposal like that"
"Neil," said Grizel at last, "I would like a proposal that comes from your heart not one that someone else said you should stay and I want us to make our decisions together especially when I'm involved."
"Okay," nodded Neil, "Grizel, I've loved you since I first met you the boat and I'll always love you. I want you to be the first person I see in the morning and the last person I see at night. I want you to see the best and worst about me and love me because and despite of it all. I want to know I am a better person for having met and married you. Grizel darling, what are you doing for the next forty or fifty years. Will you be my wife?"
Grizel, blushed, "I will," she murmered, "Neil, I love you."
Joey who had taken herself off while Neil was trying to propose again, came back and offered her congratulations.
'I bet that is one proposal Neil will never forget.' she thought irreverently, 'and if he does I'm sure Grizel will have a teapot or frypan handy.'

And do we get to see Jo tell Jack that she's not going to be pushed around any longer?

Thanks Fiona, that was brilliant!

Thanks, Fiona. I'm glad that Grizel made Neil agree to letting her have a say in the decisions they made.
