The school bus had a mixture of boys on. Different age ranges, but then three or four different teams had gone to a neighbouring school to do battle in a rugby tournament. Now the battle had been lost and won, the Maynards and their teams were homeward bound for school. There was singing on the coach, some quite bawdy songs too. The last thing Charles remembered was an ear splitting crash and he saw Mike sailing through the air, Felix clinging to him and Steve rushing towards them. EVerything went black.

Back at the Chalet School, Len was doing her duty by Mamma and dealing with the latest problem girl.

The telephone rang at the San and a grim faced Neil Sheppard handed the receiver to Jack Maynard. Jack frowned at the interruption. Not another swollen ankle on the latest problem girl at school!

The news reporter had never seen anything like it. He was broadcasting live to the studio,

"Tom I've never seen anything like this. It's a miracle nobody was killed! Initial reports say four boys aged nine, eleven, fourteen and fifteen have been taken to hospital suffering severe injuries. It is believed all four boys are brothers..."

Blissfully unaware, Joey Maynard lived ate and breathed the CHalet School. She was proud of her boys, they did as their father told them. That was all. She worried about her girls! Her triplets! Her lovely triplets! It was so unique to have triplets! Oh they were growing up too fast! SHe could keep such a detailed eye on her girls, why she was the Chalet School! She knew every minutiae of what was said and what went on! She could look after her girls properly, just as Madge did for her.

Back at the san, Jack was alone in his study, his face ashen white and his head in his hands.

In hospital, Charles briefly regained consciousness. A nurse asked him about his parents.

"Call Uncle Dick and Auntie Mollie. Mum and Dad won't come, they can't they have too much important stuff to do..."

Charles slipped back into unsconsciousness leaving a shocked and puzzled nurse.

Fenella Eaton had a problem. Athough she had loving parents, a happy family and had been brough up properly, she had an unpleasant quirk in her character. She was spiteful and selfish. She had not minded being sent to the Chalet School, unaware her parents were doing it because they were at their wits' end over their daughter's character.

She had been abrupt with her sheepdog, a charming girl by the name of Anne Lambert. This in turn made Fenella incur the wrath of Jack Lambert and her gang. Fenella's meeting with Mrs Maynard had not been a great success. She disliked all animals and for the first time in his life, Bruno took a dislike to a Chalet School Girl! He gave a low growl and slunk away, tail down much to Joey's puzzlement.

Talking to Fenella, or rather as Fenella was talking to her, Joey had felt a dislike and disgust she had not felt for years. That she should dislike a fellow Chaletian! Why, she had not felt that since Thekla von Stift! Joey started to worry. She tried to reason with the girl to persuade her to join in the community that was the Chalet School. Joey thought long and hard; really the girl had nothing to complain about!

At this moment in time, Fenella was just wallowing in self pity when Con Maynard appeared, blissfully unaware her brothers were in hospital.

"Ah Fenella! Miss Annersley would like you to take this copy of the nativity play to Mrs Maynard at Freuedesheim. I'm afraid the phones are down all over the Platz so she can't telephoen. Hm! The weather looks OK, but do take your hat and scarf, thanks!"

As Con walked away, Fenella glared after her. Hat and scarf! Ha! Like she needed telling ! Con must think her an imbecile. Still, the wretched parcel had to be taken over and it would get her out of the purgatory that was school.

So Fenella stormed off, package in hand. She knocked on the door,

"Hello? Mrs Maynard?"

Fenella dumped the package on the table in the Speisesaal. As she did so she knocked a letter flying. She thought it just went to the floor and was not bothered about picking it up. Unfortunately as she left, a strong gust of wind blew the letter into the fire.

The contents of the letter were crucial. It was in Jack Maynard's handwriting and he had sent his fastest courier to Freuedesheim with a letter to say the boys were critically ill in hospital and he was flying out that instant. She was to contact him as soon as possible.

On the flight, Jack could not keep still. He had Phil Graves with him. Neil Sheppard was holding the fort at the San.

Fenella stormed back to the Chalet School.

Joey came downstairs from the nursery where she had been. She noticed the package and cheerfully opened it to look at the comments on the Nativity play.

Meanwhile four boys were in a deep sleep. Their father was only hours away.

A letter? Surely Jack would not have just written a letter - regardless of how fast a courier. He'd have been there to tell Joey - and incidentally pick up clothes etc that he'll need. And he'd have booked two seats as Joey would have gone along. Confused

Poor Charles, thinking that his parents won't be willing to drop everything and come to see him. I hope Jo does find out soon and that she shows the boys that they are just as important to her as the precious triplets.

"Eternal damnation take those wretched telephonic machines!"

"Calm down Jack! This isn't going to help your boys! Erich would have got to Freudesheim with your letter in a flash and it's nobody's fault those telephones were down!"

"I can't bear this! Maybe I should have waited for Joey to join me at the airport! Maybe I should have gone to Freuedesheim to pack some more clothes!"

"Well thank goodness you always keep a suitcase with overnight bag and a change of clothes at the San anyway! Joey would want you there as soon as possible! Now take it easy Jack!"

"Take it easy? You haven't had nearly all your boys wiped out in one stroke by some cruel blow of fate! Will Geoff remember his brothers?"

"Jack! This is morbid! It isn't like you!"

Phil Graves was all ready to administer a dose to Jack. Goodness knows he looked like he needed it. Jack had completely lost it when he heard the news his sons were critically ill in hospital. He tried and tried to get through to Joey, the Chalet School, anywhere, so he had to settle for a letter! He had then grabbed his emergency overnight suitcase and gone to the airport to be with his sons, confident Joey was hot on his heels. By a cruel twist of fate, it was not to be. For those awful few hours, reason and Jack Maynard lost company.

Joey thought it odd Jack had not returned. The phones were still down. She was astonished to see Grizel make her way up the path to Freuedesheim with her husband Neil.

"Neil! Grizel! To what do I owe this honour? Jack isn't here I'm afraid. Why...whatever is wrong Grizel?"

Grizel put her arm around Joey and led her to a sofa.

"Did you get an urgent letter from Jack today?" she asked.

"No. Grizel what is all this about?"

"Just before the phones went down, Jack received a phone call from abroad. I'm sorry Joey but there was an accident. A school bus carrying Steve, Chas, Mike and Felix back from a rugby tournament..."

Joey's face went white.

"A crash? Are...the boys...are they badly hurt?"

Grizel held onto Joey's hands. Neil spoke up.

"They are in a critical condition. Jack tried to get through to you, goodness knows he tried, but he was frantic with worry. He just grabbed his overnight bag he always keeps at the San and sent a courier asking you to come out as soon as possible.

"Then where's the letter?" Joey practically shrieked.

"Where indeed?" said Grizel.

"Joey I only found out myself after Neil had driven all the way home to Neuchatel. I knew the phones were down here, so I've come to look after the tinies whilst you get to England. Come along Joey, let's pack straight away!"

Grizel's firm but gentle no nonsense approach seemed to steady Joey. Grizel had got Joey half packed when the phones came back and started ringing in earnest.

"That could be Jack! It must be!" Joey darted for the phone.

It was not Jack. It was Miss Annersley. Quite how Joey controlled herself, she did not know. Apparently Fenella Eaton had barricaded herself into a classroom and would not come out until Mrs Maynard personally came round to listen to her problems!

Joey literally boiled over.

Oh the decision!

Should she just leave it to Jack, after all he was the doctor, he was the boys father, he looked after the boys, she looked after the girls. Right? The boys spent more time away from their Switzerland home, they stayed with friends for hoildays and were supposed to be tough strong men, as the girls were supposed to be tough strong girls and no child of Joeys was going to be a spineless jellyfish.

Besides as the first pupil of the Chalet School and a woman who understood girls with more of a personal touch than the teachers, shouldn't Joey go to this unfortunate child? Had she not put the interests of the girls before that of her own family? Had she not cared for Mary Lou when she was lying comatose after her accident with Emerence's sledge? Were there not hundreds of girls whom she had mothered? Joey had found out the problems of many girls and cured them! That was her role in life! She was there to look after the Naomi Eltons, the Prunella Davidsons, the Joan Bakers of this world. This was where her duty lay.

In theory.

Joey caught sight of her photographs of her children. the "brat collection" as Jack jokingly called them. She loved those photographs! Tears welled up in her eyes as she saw the picture of Steve, Chas, Mike, Felix and Geoff all cuddled up on the sofa. Only Geoff was alive. Her boys were in a critical condition, they might even die, they might not think their mother cared for them. Oh cruel, cruel fate! The lives of four of her five boys were hanging in the balance and here was some brat demanding she come over and soothe her spoilt feelings, because it was what Joey had done hundreds of times to Chalet School Girls past and present! It wasn't as if there was anything wrong with the girl, she was just spiteful!

Nothing could stop Joey's maternal feelings. To have nurtured your own children and have them taken away like this, when you were far away from them; just because they were boys didn't mean she loved them any less! Indeed when the triplets had so exhausted her patience in the past, Joey would pointedly go to her sons and spend time with them. The girls were also fascinted by their brothers. There was always laughter, tricks and games! Len was always asking her brothers to write regular letters! Margot always wanted to know the latest games scores and pranks! Con always wanted to know everything and so did Felicity and Cecil and Phil! Every time the boys came home, a party of sisters would descend upon them with all sorts of questions demanding stories, jokes and games! Sometimes Joey and Jack had to fight off their own daughters to get to their sons!

So it was with a clear conscience and a great deal of emotion that Joey said,

"No Hilda, I will not."

"I beg your pardon Joey?"

"I said no Hilda."

"May I ask why?"

"I am sick of dealing with people like Fenella. I am sick of it. She has no problem whatsoever except she is an unpleasant girl. She reminds me of Thekla. Her parents love her and care for her and did not spoil her, she is just unpleasant. I am not prepared to help people like that. From what Len tells me, she is harming other pupils. She is disrupting classes and fails to work either academically, musically or in sport. In short, she needs a kick up the backside. So, no. I shall not come over."

"I see." was the reply.

"Oh Hilda. I meant every word. The other thing which you won't know about is there has been the most horrific crash in England. My boys are...are....Anyway, I am going to see my sons, because I am their mother and I love them. Jack has already gone out there. I am following him. I happen to think the lives of my babies are far more important than my obligations to the Chalet School. If Fenella thinks that is selfish, then I don't care."

"Of course you must go. Hurry Joey. We shall pray for your boys. God Bless. I shall deal with Fenella Let me know how the boys are."

"I will and thank you Hilda!"

Joey fled Freuedesheim for England. As she left a horrible realisation crept into her mind.

The same thought occurred to Hilda Annersely.

"Dear Lord, WHAT do we tell Felicity and the triplets?"

In England, Jack walked down the cold, polished corridors of the hospital. He was led to the children's ward. He had tried to phone Joey several times. Eventually he had got through to Grizel who had given him the news he wanted to hear. Joey was on her way.

Jack baulked at the sight of the bay he was led to. Four beds. Two opposite each other. Steve was closest to the door, Mike next to him by the window. Charles was opposite Mike and Felix was opposite Steve. All boys were unconscious, their bodies floppy and eerily lifeless. Oxygen masks were on their faces. their hair looked matted and unkempt. Bloodstained bandages were being changed by nurses as faces were washed.

Jack moved to each one.

"My boys! My baby boys!" he whispered.

Charles stirred.

"Dad? I must be dreaming. Papa is in the San he has so much work, we musn't disturb Papa and we musn't worry Mamma. Mamma is looking after the Chalet School. Musn't worry Mamma or Papa. Is that you Uncle Dick?"

Charles' words, although spoken in delirium broke Jack and he was led sobbing away by Phil Graves.

"Charles, Papa's here! Mamma's coming, oh Charles!"

But Charles was asleep.

Joey could not contain herself as the taxi dreww up outside the hospital. There she saw Jack, alone and looking very forlorn. She ran straight to the arms of her husband.

"How bad is it Jack?"

"Felix has just come out of surgery, he had a fractured skull, lacerations and bruises. Charles received a heavy blow to the head and a broken collar bone. Steve and Mike both received heavy lacerations, glass went all over them. Mike has a broken leg and both of Steve's wrists were broken.

Apparently Mike got out of his seat to ask his teachers something then the bus swerved to miss a motorbike and hit a boulder. Mike went flying, if Felix and Steve hadn't grabbed him, he would have been killed. Charles was hit by falling luggage.

Here we are."

A painfully thin voice croaked,

"Mamma! Mamma! Mamma!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Back at the Chalet School, Miss Annersley had a problem to deal with. Fenella Eaton. She was still barricaded in the classroom and Len was rapidly losing patience speaking through the keyhole.

"Enough Len! Let me speak to her."

Len stepped back, seething with rage at Fenella.

"Fenella. This is your last chance! Stop behaving like a baby and open this door at once!"

"Shan't! Where's Mrs Maynard?"

"In England. She was absolutely disgusted at your behaviour and she is not your personal agony aunt and quite rightly refuses to help you. Like me she is of the opinion you do not require any help! You come from a loving, stable family background and you are doing this out of spite. Gaudenz, break the door down. Matron, once you have Fenella, confine her to sickbay until I send for her. Len, I need to see you and Con and Margot in my office this instant!

Hilda Annersley breathed deeply and prayed hard. She prayed for the whole Maynard family and all their friends and relatives. She had known every one of Joey's children since birth. On rare occasions she had done some babysitting for Joey and had found the boys to be adventurous, good humoured little chaps. She really was very fond of them. Now she didn't know if they were going to the arms of God.

She was interrupted by a knock at the door and the entrance of the triplets.

The three sisers curtsied and were bade to sit down. All three looked so concerned. Why did Auntie Hilda have red eyes? Len decided to break the ice.

"Fenella is in Matron's hands now Miss Annersley. Thankfully Gaudenz did not have to break down the door."

"I'm pleased." Miss Annersley replied.

"Is Mamma, is she...?" Con did not finish.

Miss Annersley looked at her, shaken out of her reverie with a jolt. She had a job to do.

"No. Your Mamma and Papa are safe and well. I'm afraid it's worse. Your brothers. There was a coach accident. The boys."

Struggling to hold back the tears and trying in vain to keep the emotion out of her voice Miss Annersley hugged each triplet in turn.

"Mamma and Papa have gone to England to be with them. They are in a critical condition. The telephones are so bad, I haven't heard any news. Auntie Grizel is helping Anna with the tinies. I need to tell Felicity."

Each triplet felt a cold nauseous sensation. There was not a dry eye in Mss Annersley's study. Choking her sobs, Len managed to speak.

"P..p...p..please Auntie Hilda! We want to go and see them! It may be the very last time! Oh please! I'm begging you!"

Faced with the imploring looks of the triplets, Miss Annersley was ready to move heaven and earth to ease their distress.

"Very well, I shall come with you. Mlle can deputise for me. We must tell Felicity, but I think we need to have a quick wash first."

So it was that when Felicity was summoned, she was told her brothers were badly hurt, but Mamma and Papa were with them and Auntie Hilda was taking them to England. The girls were allowed a night at Freuedesheim to pack and prepare. Con had been unable to sleep. SHe had gone into the nursery where little Geoff was sleeping.

"Oh Geoff, are you now the only boy in the family?"

It was too much for Con. She did a little tour of her brothers' rooms only to find her sisters were doing the same. Felicity was sleeping in Felix's bed and Margot was hugging Charles' pillow close to her. Len was pottering around Steve's room. Miss Annersley called Matron over with a sleeping draught. Tomorrow could not come soon enough.

Joey could not bear to be separated from her boys. Steve was calling to her using the name of "Mamma" which he used in his babyhood. He was in such pain. So was Mike. Mike was explaining to Jack what happened.

"It was just for a second, Papa. I wasn't being naughty. I just went to ask Mr Graham how long the journey would take. It was only for a second, I wasn't being disobedient."

"I know. I know." Jack tried to calm his son.

It was heartbreaking to Jack and Joey to see their children so weak. Lying still in a deep sleep or in pain. Charles was still concussed. He was vaguely aware his parents were there. He would slip in and out of consciousness sometimes calling his parents by his teachers' names or that of his uncles and aunts and cousins.

Jack and Joey spent the night in the hospital.

There was a deathly silence at the Chalet School when Mademoiselle asked for extra prayers for the Maynard family and gave out the news that the boys were in a critical condition.

Many of the girls in Felicity or the triplets' classes knew the Maynard boys. All were pronounced to be jolly chaps and never spiteful or nasty. There was one other relative whom Matey looked after. Ailie Russell. A few months younger than Steve and a bit of a tomboy herself, she felt so much better after a chat with Matey; but then, Matey wiould always take good care of Madame's daughters.

It was daybreak when the triplets and Felicity with Miss ANnersley in charge arrived at the hospital. They met Jack at the entrance to the ward.

"I'm sorry Jack, they had to come. All of them, even Felicity. it's just too big a blow to them. They must see their brothers, they have every right."

Jack nodded. He purposefully took Felicity in his arms. Children under fourteen were not allowed on the ward, but it would be cruel to leave Felicity out. Thankfully Felix didn't look too bad after surgery. His head was heavily bandaged though.

"Now Felicity you will be a brave girl won't you?"

Felicity nodded.

Jack gave her a brief run down of what the boys looked like so she wouldn't get too much of a shock. It was a useful piece of information for the triplets.

For a brief moment, Con felt she couldn't go in. She was so frightened of what she would see. Were her brothers horribly injured? How much pain were they in?

Miss Annersley held onto her hand. Both took a deep breath and entered.

They saw Joey clasping Felix's little hand. The girls ran to their mother. Little Felix opened one eye. Were his sisters really here? His twin! Felicity! In Papa's arms! This was a miracle!

"Flisty! Felic! Felicity! Please!" He croaked. He struggled to get up. His mother supported him.

"You're here! Here at last! And Mamma and Papa! Oh the crash was so horrid!"

The twins' first incliniation was to hang onto each other for dear life, but Felix was still in some pain.

"Gently my darlings! Gently!" Joey soothed her twins. Things were looking up!

Felicity had worried she would weep at the sight of Felix in pain and injured. However the light in his eyes and seeing him summon all the reserves of energy he had was a reward for that young lady.

"I didn't think they would let you out of school!" he croaked.

"Oh Felix! Auntie Hilda said she couldn't possibly leave me behind!"

Ever so gently and quietly, the triplets superceded Joey's role as "mother" and were going round straightening pillows, tucking in blankets and helping Jack and Joey move the boys into more comfortable positions.

"Please, water, please!" croaked Mike.

"Careful, don't gulp it down, careful now Mike, we don't want it everywhere! That's it, now sip!"

Con gently coaxed Mike to sip his water.

Len had gone over to Steve. Steve was her second in command. He looked after the brothers, she looked after the sisters. Both were level headed, responsible young people.

"Len." Steve smiled.

"I'm here Steve! I'm glad you are OK!" Len's relief was obvious.

"Terrible weather and then we crashed. Managed to win the rugger though!" he tried to sound casual in his discomfort.

Len laughed, "Every cloud has a silver lining eh?"

"Mm! Can't say it's the same as your avalanches and floods and flying precipices!"

"No. They aren't something I would recommend."

Margot crossed to Charles.

"Hello Chas. How are you feeling?"

"Margot, is it you? Oh good! I feel terrible."

"Well, I expect you are. We are all very worried about you boys. We simply had to come and see you. It would be inhuman if we didn't."

"Thought Mamma and Papa would be too busy with the school and the San!"

"Oh Charles! You didn't really think that did you? You did! Oh Charlie, you musn't ever think like that! Promise me you won't!"

Inside, Margot was so glad that Miss Annersley had dealt with Fenella Eaton. Nothing, but nothing would get in the way of a member of the family coming to comfort another. Nothing!

"Mamma is going to read to the boys now Margot. They need to sleep."

Jack Maynard had arranged some seats and Joey in her beautiful, golden voice lulled her sons to sleep with a tale she knew the boys appreciated: The tale of the brave Lt Maynard and his fight to the death with the infamous pirate Blackbeard.

With the boys asleep and as they departed, Miss Annersley and the Maynards noticed a crowd of children disappear from the doorway. They too had enjoyed the tale of Blackbeard the Pirate.

I always wondered if Lt Maynard was a relation! Wink

Gorgeous update, Phil. Love the way each triplet went to one of the boys. We never see enough of the boys and the girls together.

Lovely to see how much the triplets care for their brothers.

There were relapses and there was pain, but the boys recovered. Miss Annersley took the triplets and Felicity back after two days. THe triplets reached Freuedesheim and nearly collapsed with relief as they told Grizel how the boys were.

Weeks later, first Joey, then Jack returned. Jack returned with the boys!

Four fragile looking young men were taken to see their Auntie Hilda and their sisters. THey were fussed over and felt quite embarrassed by the attention.

Of Fenella Eaton, Joey had several strict words to say that as a mother, her family came first and Fenella had better pull her socks up and behave in future!
