#1: Mother & Child Author: Kat, Location: AbertawePosted: Sun Jun 18, 2006 9:47 pm The air hung heavily in the room, the silence only broken by the laboured breathing of the grey haired lady lying still on the bed.
Eyes which could once upon a time light up a whole room, were now shaded with darkness, and lips with a smile which could always lift a spirit, were now drawn tightly against the pain.
A quiet voice spoke gently, “Would you like a drink, Mummy?”
Something stirred in the eyes, awakening at the sound of the voice. “No, but thank you.” A barely audible whisper, carrying with it a thousand emotions to the child by the bedside. “Some sleep, I think…” Mummy’s voiced trailed off with a sigh, and her eyes closed.
I stood, watching her straining to breathe. She stirred a little as I dropped a soft kiss on her forehead, “I love you”.
I turn to go, but a murmur stops me.
“Thank you.”
Nothing so simple has ever touched me before, not like this.

Later that evening I hurry down the road, something urging me on faster and faster. I can see figures standing by the door, and I practically run to them.
I don’t stop to hear the words, but go straight in through the white door, to the high bed. Not a sound broke the stillness; everything was stopped, suspended, there was nothing.
Mummy was gone.
