For Mia's drabble challenge

"But, but, Miss Annersley!" the young woman sputtered in shock, as the headmistress looked on with an indulgent smile. "I can't possibly be head girl!"

"Of course you can. You have a good deal of influence on the other girls, you're responsible and organised, you've been with the school for a number of years and you know its traditions and customs."

"But I really need to buckle down to work this year and study for the scholarship exams. My family's not rich, you know, and I need a good showing if I want to go to university next fall." She sat back, looking stunned and rebellious.

Miss Annersley laughed and the girl looked up in startlement. "Do you know how much like Joey Bettany you sound. She was wildly rebellious about taking the post of headgirl, but she ended up being the best head girl we've ever head. I know you'll rise to the challenge too."

"I just can't be headgirl and keep up with my work. I don't want to end up doing a bad job at both. I really can't..."

The headmistress raised her hand to stop the girl, no longer smiling. "Don't be silly. There's no one else in your year who can do the job. You're the only suitable candidate. I know you'll rise to the challenge, and I will not take no for an answer. It's your duty to your school, surely you can see that."

"Yes, Miss Annersley," she muttered, and bobbing a half hearted curtsy, Marilyn walked from the room with shoulders slumped in defeat.
