This is set in the summer holidays after Thoedora at the Chalet School
Len was sitting in the little alcove in her room, deep in thought. It had been a horrible start to the holidays. First there had been the shock of Margot’s behaviour towards her, Con and their friends and then there had been the whole incidence with Mike. She gave a shudder. It had been absolutely terrifying, seeing Mike going down the side of the cliff after some eggs and then he had struggled to get back up. Admittedly she did feel like strangling him herself after the event with the shock and fear of it, but to top it all off Mama collapsed and they couldn’t revive her again. Somehow she had kept her head and sent Con and Margot off with the kids to Auntie Biddy and then sent Steve off to find Jack. It had been a terrifying time as Len had honestly thought her Mother was about to die or was in the process of dying. Understandably her father had been furious when he found out the cause, but Len didn’t understand how Papa refused to have anything to do with Mike. Mike had been distraught. He had had nightmares every night since believing he had killed Mama. It wasn’t in Len’s heart to stay angry with him for long and her anger had mostly been reactionary to the terrible fear she had felt when he was down the side of the cliff.

Yes, poor Mike. He deserved better than being ignored by his father in this case.

Thanks Fiona.

Jack and Jem were good at ignoring their kids whenever they did something they didn't approve of. I always felt sorry for Mike here. Thanks, Fiona.

I think this is a situation that makes me feel sorry for all of the Maynards. Jack and Jo are missing out because of the way they treat their kids and all of the kids miss out for various reasons. I know (or understand from reading various things) that this was the norm in those days but I very glad we aren't there any more. Hugs for Len and Mike!

I really don't like Jack in this part of the series. His reaction to Margot's treatment of Ted is to refuse to have "anything to do with" her, and then a few weeks later he does the same thing to Mike who must have been really shocked and upset after the accident on the cliff. So much for being a SLOC Rolling Eyes !

“Want some company Len,” said a voice.
“Con,” said Len flatly.
Con glanced quickly at Len and said, “Mama will be fine Len. Papa says she is doing better.”
“That’s good said Len listlessly.
Con slipped her arm through Len’s. It wasn’t like Len to be so listless. “Do you want to talk about it Len or would you rather be on your own for a bit?” She asked gently.
Len looked up at Con. “No it okay, I wouldn’t mind if you stayed. My minds all over the place and I think it would help to talk about it. There are not many people I can,” she added sadly.
“You can talk to me if you like. You’re my sister. I’ll always be there for you,” said Con softly.
“I know,” said Len. Then it was like a dam had burst. “It’s the whole thing with Margot and Ted. My own sister did that to one of my friends. After all the things we’d been through. I protected her, shielded her from trouble and she still can’t be bothered to be nice. She doesn’t care enough about me to be nice to my friends and yet, we’ve been really nice to Emmy. I mean I like Emmy but she not who I really want around all the time but she is Margot’s best friend and I love her so I just accepted it. I feel like Margot has betrayed me. That she doesn’t even really like me, but uses me for her self. And then there’s Papa. I know he’s angry with Mike. I was too initially but I soon got over that. Why can’t he? Mike is devastated that he won’t talk to him. The kid’s heartbroken. But I don’t feel like I think as well of Papa any more.” Said Len in a low voice. “I don’t like who he is at the moment. I could understand with Margot. Her behaviour was horrible and she’s old enough to know better. But Mike; he’s only seven. I just don’t want to be around them any more. I just want to get away from my family for a while.” Len finished talking feeling exhausted. It had been an emotionally trying two months for her.

Poor Len. Having to take the responsibility of being the eldest daughter with all that that entails, and also trying to grapplew with the idea that you may love people, but you don't always like them, or indeed even recognise them.

It was Con’s turn to look thoughtful. “I can understand about Margot,” she said at last. “I wasn’t happy about the way she behaved either.”
“Yes, but your still friends with her. I don’t want to be,” interrupted Len.
“But I also told Margot what I thought of her and told her I wouldn’t accept it whereas you tried to stop any arguments from happening,” said Con bluntly. “I can understand why; you’ve always done that, even when we were little. Remember the holiday we went on to Yorkshire and Margot wanted the best cubby?”
“Yes, vaguely,” said Len, starting to see where this was going.
“Well I told her off for being a pig over it all,” said Con with a grin, “and yes we argued, but Margot knows she can’t always push me around. I know I don’t always say it the best way, but Margot knows exactly where she stands with me and what I won’t tolerate. I know you can usually see what’s wrong with people better than me, but you will also do your utmost to keep us out of trouble too. That’s part of the problem Len,” said Con more softly. “Sometimes, people need to get into trouble and face what’s their behaviour is doing to others.
Len could see Con’s point. Margot had been a lot nicer since the blow up.
“I guess part of me is scared,” confessed Len. “I don’t feel the same way about Margot any more. I love her cos she’s my sister and I always will, but I don’t like her very much,” she said in a low voice. Len was feeling extraordinarily guilty about that.
“Len, you have seen a side to Margot that you didn’t want to face. It was easier protecting her, than to see that,” pointed out Con. “It’s hard for you cos you want to believe the best in people and you didn’t want to believe your triplet sister could be like that.”
Con and Len fell into a companionable silence. Con was glad to see Len looking a little more relaxed.

“What if it all happens again,” burst out Len suddenly. “I’m scared Margot will do it all over again and I hate not feeling like I can’t be friendly with people and always worrying about what she thinks.”
Con looked thoughtful. “I talked to Auntie Hilda about this,” she said.
“You what,” gasped Len.
“Well why not?” asked Con placidly, “I didn’t particularly want to talk to Papa and we couldn’t to Mama so who else was there.”
“No I guess not,” murmured Len still looking a little shocked. “I just can’t imagine the Head saying anything but we must forgive and it’s all in the past and all that sort of thing.”
“Oh she said all that,” announced Con, “but I did point out that Margot has lost her temper and tried to pull up before. Only this time it affected all of us a lot more. She agreed and said sometimes it’s not the forgiving part that’s the hardest but the learning to trust again that is.”
“What do you mean?” Asked Len. “That was the most confusing sentence.”
“Aunti Hilda said trust needed to be rebuilt. She said we would both probably find it easier to forgive Margot, but we would find it harder to trust her again. She also said we should give her the chance to.” Len shelved that comment for the moment.
“Do you know what I’m scared of the most,” she confessed. “I’m scared that I’ll just go back to shielding Margot again. Anything to save an argument in the hope she’ll behave decently. That’s what I was hoping for all through the term. I honestly thought she would and I’m scared she won’t again.”
“I know,” said Con. “You’re scared about how you’ll react to Margot, not how Margot will behave.”
“Will I be strong enough to stand up to her?” asked Len quietly. “I don’t know,” said Con thoughtfully.
“Maybe you need a break from her. Go some place where you can be yourself and not worry about the rest of us. Maybe spend the holidays with Ros or Ted.”
“You know I can’t,” said Len, “not with the way things are with Papa and Mike.”
Con saw her point. She would not feel comfortable leaving the others to deal with Mike.
“What about Carnbach, then?” She suggested suddenly. “Spend a term at the other Chalet School. I can’t see it being a huge problem. It’s just another branch of this one. It could be just for a term or for a whole school year. You’d get a break from all of us and be just Len Maynard, one of the riff-raff,” she said with a grin. “It might be interesting going to school in England for awhile.”
Len looked thoughtful. “I would hate to leave my friends though,” she said. “I really like Ros and Ted.”
“That would be the downside,” admitted Con, “But if they’re your friends they’ll understand and it won’t make much of a difference with your friendships in the long run,” she added, “otherwise, they never really were friends.”
Len started to look happier. The thought of going to school on her own was immensely appealing. Her face fell with a sudden thought,
“But what reason can I give?” she asked. “I can’t tell Mama and Papa the real reason why.”
“True. Why not say you’d like a change, not to always feel responsible for us irresponsible ones,” she said with a grin, “or,” she said more seriously, “say you have been talking to Primrose Trevaose and thought that changing schools even for a term would broaden your horizons a little.”
“I might even consider doing it, when you come back. It’d be fun, now I should give Anna a break from those kids. She has them all helping in the kitchen.” “No you stay here,” she said as Len started to get up. “Have a break. I know you went to Mike in the night after the nightmare he had. Anna saw you,” Con explained “I’ll see to the kids.” Con left Len feeling considerably happier.

Con is so very thoughtful in this; perhaps her capacity to stand back and contemplate all aspects of the problem has allowed her to evaluate it more objectively than Len. And how interesting that she should have consulted Hilda, and then worked through the advice she was given.

Thank you Fiona

Later that night Anna was checking all the children before heading to bed. She was feeling extremely worried about the situation happening in the family. It wasn’t good for all this bad feeling about. First Joey was extremely unwell and Dr Jack was frantic with worry and not to mention extremely angry with Mike whose actions seemed to have triggered his Mother’s collapse. Anna shook her head. She should have insisted that Joey not take all eleven children with her. Poor Mike was heartbroken and had more than paid for heedlessly climbing down the cliff side. She was also concerned about the triplets. They all seemed so unlike themselves. Len was listless and disinterested in anything; Margot seemed to be doing her best to be nicer to everyone, but wasn’t her usual bubbly self; she kept stealing looks at Len when she thought no one was looking; and Con seemed to be trying to keep the peace between Len and Margot. Anna she had to put a stop to all this bad feeling. She loved the children as though they were her own. She had nursed them, picked them when they had fallen over, listened to their woes, disciplined them when they needed it and was seen as being a lot stricter than either Jack or Joey and yet all the Maynard children knew they could always go to Anna. Anna’s steps quickened as she heard Mike crying. She slipped into his room.
“Hush mein Volegien,” she said softly. “Felix is sleeping. It is alright little bird, Anna is here.”
“I was dreaming Mama had died and I was the one who killed her,” sobbed Mike.
“Mama will be alright madchen. She is sleeping and will soon be well again. It was an accident, and you did not mean to scare Mama like that,” soothed Anna.
“Will you stay with me please, Anna. I don’t want to sleep on my own.”
“Shh, of course I’ll stay,” soothed Anna, making herself more comfortable. She cuddled Mike back to sleep.
‘I will have to speak to Dr Jack,’ she thought sleepily, ‘this can’t continue.’

Jack was doing some work in the study, or trying to. He had had the worse scare of his life in the last few days, with Joey’s collapse and the difficulty he had had in reviving her. Jack rubbed his face wearily. He did not want to do any work, but he didn’t want to be with his children either. There was a knock at the door. Jack sighed. Who was this?
“Come in,” he said unwelcomingly.
Anna walked steadily into the room, refusing to be put off by Jack’s unwelcoming tones.
“Dr Jack,” she started softly. “I need to talk to you about the children.”
“Can’t it wait was,” Jack’s ungracious response. “I don’t particularly wish to discuss them at the moment.”
"No, it can’t wait,” said Anna firmly.
Jack looked up with surprise. In all the years Anna had lived with them she had almost always dealt with Joey or the children. Rarely if ever had he and Anna had a one on one conversation without someone else around and yet here was Anna in his study. He saw that she was shaking and yet there was a determined look in her eyes.
“Why don’t you take a seat Anna,” he said almost kindly. “What is it that you wanted to talk about?”
“Mike,” said Anna.
Jack stiffened almost imperceptibly.
“I don’t wish to discuss Mike,” he said coldly. “His behaviour recently leaves a lot to be desired.”
“Dr Jack,” said Anna, “He is a seven year old boy and like most seven year old boys he will do things without thinking. He is heart broken over what has happened and nothing you say or do will ever match how hard he is condemning himself for it. I doubt he will ever do anything so heedless again and your behaviour towards him is not right.”
“I don’t think I wish to listen to your views on the subject,” said Jack coldly. “He is my son.”
“And in my care,” said Anna refusing to be put off, “which means I must do what is best for Mike. Dr Jack; you are a good doctor and a good man. You have helped so many people over the years, why won’t you help your son. He is your son.”
“Anna, that’s enough, maybe if you had been disciplining him probably this would never have happened.” said Jack angrily, “I think you should leave.”
Anna stood and looked Jack full in the face.
“I am disappointed in you Dr Jack, her voice quivered. “I thought you were better than that,” and walked out of the room, feeling sick at heart, thinking, 'I have failed Mike.'

Madge and Jem Russell arrive at Freudesheim later that day. And after a long conversation between Madge and Joey and Jack and Joey, a lot of things seemed to be resolved. Joey seemed a lot better and started taking the reins of running her home again. She also started seeing some of the undercurrents between people.
The triplets seemed out of sorts with each other and ‘What on earth was going on between Jack and Anna?’ thought Joey. ‘I’m going to get to the bottom of this or my name isn’t Joey Maynard.
Jack was starting to feel very guilty about how he had treated Anna and knew that was he said to her about being responsible for Mike’s behaviour was unforgivable. He also knew he was going to have to apologize to her and hoped she would forgive him for the nasty remarks he had made. Len was feeling happier now Joey was up and about and decided to talk to her parents that night about going to Carnbach

“Len you can’t go to the Carnbach branch,” said Jack sternly. “You cannot run from your problems. I can understand after last term that you may feel like running away, but that’s not always the best solution.”
Jo looked at Jack quizzically.
“What happened last term Jack?”
Jack started protesting.
“Jack don’t try to lie to me, I know something happened last term,” she said her voice dangerously quiet, “I think it’s time you explained yourself. It was all very well when I wasn’t well but I’m fine now and I think it’s time you explained what happened last term with the girls.” Jack glared at Len, ‘See what you’ve caused,’ his look plainly said.
Jo caught the look and put her arms around her oldest daughter.
“Len, I think you should leave Papa and I alone to talk about this,” she said still in the same dangerously quiet voice.
Len trailed out of the room.
“It’ll be okay sugarpie,” added her Mother reassuringly.
Len wasn’t so sure. It seemed like her Father was spending these holidays being permanently angry. Jack and Joey had rarely argued in their entire married life. They had understood each other, supported each other and especially after the War Joey was just so glad to have Jack back in one piece, that she often let things go but for him to keep secrets from her regarding her children and to treat Mike the way he did; that was not on. She set her jaw in a way that Jack was starting to become familiar with.
“Jack I love you, you’re my best friend as well as my husband but this has got to stop. I’m not a child and I refuse to be treated like one. Your expecting the girls to keep something so huge from me that Len wants to change schools over it and you refuse to tell me what caused all this. You’re expecting our children to be the adults, not me. No Jack,” as Jack tried to argue. “I want an explanation and it’s time you stopped treating me like a child.”
Jack spluttered. “Well how would you feel if I collapsed and couldn’t be revived for well over two hours. I was so scared that I was going to lose you,” he said angrily.
“That’s no worse than I felt with you away in the War or when I was told the news you were dead,” said Jo quietly. “I coped then and yes I had a lot of support through it, but I would have coped. Now, I want an explanation,”
Jack saw the implacable glint in Joey’s eyes. He had never seen her so angry. Inwardly he cursed, his slip of the tongue earlier to Len. He couldn’t blame her for not wanting to have a lot to do with Margot. He didn’t either. First that episode with Margot and Ted and then with Mike going over the cliff, he was starting to wonder at his abilities as a parent. What was he like if this was how his children behaved?

“Margot tried to blackmail Ted Grantley,” said Jack baldly. “She found out about her having been expelled three times and said she would tell everyone if she didn’t stop being friends with Len.”
“What?!” exclaimed Joey shocked, and she collapsed into a chair. “How?” she asked stunned.
“She overheard a conversation between you and Rosalie,” said Jack wearily, “She was jealous and thought it would be a good way to get her sisters attention back.”
Jack sat down too.
“I didn’t want to tell you because, I thought it would upset you even more especially as you were so unwell.” added Jack
“Jack it would have upset me, but it upsets me even more that you kept something this big from me. How come it wasn’t in her school report; there’s no way the Head would have let her get away with it.”
“Hilda didn’t,” explained Jack, “I was called in and told the whole thing.
"How did she avoid getting expelled? asked Joey, "I remember Thekla was for doing more or less the same thing.”
“Margot was truly sorry for what she’s done and that was the saving grace for her. If she wasn’t then Hilda would have had no choice but to expel her. As she said to me after she can’t keep her if that is how she treats the other girls.”
“I quite agree with her. It wouldn’t be fair,” said Joey stunned. “I just can’t believe she was so nasty.”
“Neither can I,” said Jack with some bitterness. “First Margot and then Mike nearly kills you with going down the side of a cliff.”
“Jack Maynard,” said Joey sitting up straight. “What Mike did was so completely different to Margot’s affair and you know it. He’s a seven year old kid who didn’t think. Something I think he’ll probably outgrow, especially after this affair. Margot deliberately went out of her way to be nasty and," she added, "she’s fourteen and should know better. I just can’t believe you kept this from me. How’s Con coping with all this,” she asked with some anxiety. “If Len is wanting to change schools for awhile, what’s Con wanting to do.”
“I don’t know,” said Jack rubbing his forehead, “she’s usually in a dream most the time I don’t think any of this has really affected her. She’s spending time with Margot whereas Len is carefully keeping her distance.”
Joey didn’t look satisfied. “There’s more to it than that,” she said to herself. “Anyway you still haven’t told me how it all came out,” she said.
“Emmy bought Margot a clock as a farewell present,” continued Jack. “You should see it. Anyway I think there was an argument between the girls and Margot let slip what she knew. Mary Lou overheard the conversation and she dealt with it all. She didn’t know what to do with Margot so told her she had to talk to Hilda about it all. Margot did and I was called in about the clock.”
Jack sat back exhausted; it had been a difficult couple of months and the hardest thing had been keeping this from Joey.

“I just feel such a failure as a parent Jo, said Jack with real anguish, "I thought we were bringing our kids up to be decent people.”
“We are,” said Joey thoughtfully, “but people make mistakes and Margot has made a huge one. If she learns from it then maybe it’s all for the good, poor Ted copped it though. I think our problem was we spoilt her a lot when she was little because she was so sick and with you away so much I wanted you to see the best side of them, for it to be fun for you. I wanted you to take away good memories with you when you had to go away.”
“I know Joey,” said Jack softly "and that helped. “Somehow it made it more worthwhile, but you weren’t really being fair and letting me be a parent.”
“I know,” said Joey nodding. “I can see that now, but I didn’t then.”
The two sat silent for a while.
“Maybe sending her to Canada wasn’t the best thing,” said Jack heavily. “I know she needed it for her health, but what about her emotional health.”
Joey opened her mouth and then closed it again. “What is it?” inquired Jack.
“I was just going to say it was no different to Dick and Mollie and their four oldest except, Peggy, Rix, Bride and Jackie didn’t know any different so maybe that made it easier for them,” explained Joey. “Jack we were scared we were going to lose her and given her health at the time, we could have lost her. She was so sick. It’s not like she was going amongst strangers. She was with Madge and her cousins.”
“I know,” said Jack sighing, “but what are we to do with them now.”
“Nothing,” said Joey, promptly.
“Nothing!” exclaimed Jack. “Margot is a lot better and learning to keep her temper. She’s faced the consequences of what’s she’s done. If Len wants a break from her then I think we should give it to her. She’s not saying it permanent, only that she wants a break from her for a term or two. I will certainly talk to all three about what’s happened, but a lot of where they go from here depends on them. They need to start deciding what kind of person they want to be. We can train them as much as we want, but in the end it’s up to them.”
“I know,” said Jack. “I just feel so tired.” “I’m not surprised,” said Joey standing up, “come on I think an early night is in order for you. And Jack,” she added, “You do need to talk to Mike.”
“I have,” exclaimed Jack, “I mean about Rolf,” said Joey softly, “He’s a sensitive chap and I think he’ll understand. He needs to know why you feel the way you and I feel about obeying us and why you got so angry about everything.”
Jack looked thoughtful, “Maybe,” was all he said.

I'd forgotten about Rolf. Yes that would explain why Jack would feel the need to compel obedience from his children, and why he would take their failings so personally. And it's interesting to see that Joey can see where they might have gone wrong.

I really like this bit with how thoughtful them seem and how they are able to admit their mistakes to each other. But somehow I don't think they will find it as easy to their children or other people. And I had forgotten about Rolf, too. It makes a bit more sense for Jack to react like that now.

I have finally got this entire drabble finished on my PC and so know how it will all end. Now do I post a bit each day or tantalise you all and do it every few days Hmmm? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

"And another thing," she added looking steadily at Jack, "I don't ever want you to keep something like this from me again. I know you were trying to protect me, but that still is inexcusable. I am your wife not your daughter and should be treated as such.”
Jack return look for look with his wife,
“Even if that means you collapse and I can’t revive you for two hours, Joey. "Do you realize just how scared everyone was, or that, we were all scared it was something more than just a lengthy faint. How can I give you bad news like this if you couldn’t cope with Mike going down the cliff, without fainting.”
"I’d like to see you try,” said Joey with spirit.
“I do every day in my job, and do you realize how hard all that is for me. Every day of my life I’m dealing with scared and upset people, telling some they’ll be all right, telling others sorry you won’t be. Do you think any of that is easy for me? I watch people die Jo. I watch them go through the worst they can go through, so don’t tell me I should come home and add to that pressure.”
“I am their Mother,” said Joey, eyes snapping with anger.
“Fine act like it,” snapped back Jack. “I mean it Jo, start by not falling in a heap any time something bad happens to you. You were sick before you had Phil and Geoff and you were obviously sick after if you fainted for as long as you did after Mike’s do. I did not want to add to all of that, by telling you this. You can’t even cope when I talk to you about what is going on at the San without running around telling everyone else. I talk to you because at work I’m supposed to hold it together for everyone else. I try to be the one people come to when they need support, so I come to you, my wife, the supposed empathetic one and you run around telling confidential information to everyone. All that shows me is you can’t cope and I didn’t tell you much to begin with.”
Joey’s jaw dropped, “What?” she said stunned by what Jack was saying.
“You tell the school a lot,” said Jack softly, “and you don’t show me any compassion.”
“I do so,” said Joey angrily.
“No you don’t,” said Jack firmly. “When Matey’s sister died you woke me up even though I had only a couple of hours sleep, after losing a patient to help her. I was exhausted but that did not matter, despite telling you I had lost a patient.”
“Bbbut,” stammered Joey, “you knew she was going to die. She was old and wanted to go.”
“So,” said Jack, Yes that helps, but do you think two hours of sleep, I can just go back to work again and forget about it. I told you that because I needed your support and where was it.”
Joey looked and felt stunned. In all honesty she had never really thought that Jack found his job hard or imagined what it entailed.
“If it’s so hard then why do you do it?” asked Jo in a small voice.
“I love making people well again.” Said Jack simply. “There’s a lot that’s hard with the job, but I’m not going to run away from it. I just want to know I’ll get support from you. At the moment I don’t feel like I do, in fact,” added Jack in a low voice, “that’s why I was so hard on Mike. Part of it is to do with Rolf’s death but part of it was also a reaction to all the stress going on. I certainly wasn’t fair to him, but you’re not fair to me. You just blithely assume I’ll cope with everything. I need your support, to be able to know that you’ll cope and be there for me. And I don’t feel that at all.”
“Jack I’m sorry,” said Joey simply. “I should have been there for you. You just seem to cope so I kind of expect that without thinking what it’s like for you.”
Jack smiled at his wife. “Joey, I love you, and I know you love me; I will try to tell you with what’s going on with the kids, or even better if I get called in by Hilda, she has to tell us both together.” He finished with a shaky grin. His grin faded. “I will also try and make it up to Mike too,” and Anna he added silently.
“Okay,” said Joey, and Jack she added softly, I’ll try to be more supportive of you, and not tell people confidential information about the San,” she said going red. She was well aware how scathing her sister would be on the subject if she knew.

For Alison who wanted some every day

The next day Jack issued an invitation for Mike to come for a walk with him. Mike looked at his father a little fearfully.
‘What now?’ he thought. ‘I’ve been good.’
Something in Jack’s heart broke at that look. Was he really such an ogre, that his son was terrified of. Jack had to admit that Mike’s eyes he probably was especially given his recent behaviour towards Mike.
“Okay Papa,” said Mike.
“Why don’t you join us Chas, and Steve?” he added genially.
The boys ran off to get ready. There was only Jack and Anna left in the room.
“Anna,” said Jack softly. “I just wanted to say thanks for all you said on Mike’s behalf. It was good of you to stand up for him.” Jack took a deep breath, “What I said to you was completely unforgivable. It wasn’t your fault that Mike behaved the way he did, it was something that just happened because he didn’t think and I’m so very sorry I lashed out at you the way I did.”
Anna smiled. “That’s all right. I love Mike,” She said simply.
“I know,” said Jack, with heartfelt emotion, “Thanks, thanks for everything.”
Jack had a lot of fun with the boys that afternoon.
'How have I let myself forget how fun this is,' thought Jack.
The boys on their part loved their time with Papa. He seemed to be so much fun, laughing and teasing them again. Jack had wrestled with the idea of telling the story of Rolf to Mike and decided not to. He didn’t want to add to Mike’s worries and it was a heartbreaking story for the older Maynard’s.
‘When he’s older,’ thought Jack.
Chas and Steve ran on ahead.
“Mike,” said Jack gently, “I just wanted to say how sorry I was for the way I treated you about Mama collapsing. You didn’t mean it and I wasn’t very nice to you and I’m so sorry. You’re my son and I love you.” Jack gave Mike a hug.
“Papa,” said Mike worriedly “Is Mama going to die?”
He couldn’t think of any other reason why Papa was apologizing about everything unless Mama was dying.
“No old man, she is really getting better. I promise,” said Jack gently. “I was scared for Mama, and I took that out on you. Sometimes when people are scared they say or do things that aren’t very nice and that’s what I did. You shouldn’t have gone down the cliff, but I shouldn’t have treated you the way I did and I’m sorry. You apologized for your part and I’m apologizing for mine.”
It was those words that did the trick. Seven-year-old Mike had a strong sense of justice and Papa apologizing for his part made sense.
“That’s okay Papa,” he said gravely. “I love you too.”
“Thanks,” said Jack, feeling close to tears. “I think we should catch up to the others.”
That episode was turning point for Jack and he decided he would spend more time with his children, especially his boys. On Mike’s part Jack’s apology made a lasting impression. That Papa could apologize to him, a grown up say they was wrong, when they were, deeply impressed and confused him.

Glad to see Jack making an effort with Mike.

Feel a bit sorrier for Jack now. Being Head of the San must have been very difficult and stressful sometimes. Plus they always seemed to be surrounded by Joey's relations and people from the CS - poor Jack never seemed to have any friends of his own apart from the other doctors.

Later that day saw Joey go to Margot’s room. Margot was sitting on her window seat staring listlessly out.
“Mama,” she said turning, what are you doing here?"
"I thought I would join you for a chat if that were all right?” asked Joey
“Yes it is,” said Margot moving over her face lighting a little.
“Why the long face?” asked Joey gently, “I’m doing a lot better. I know it was a nasty shock for you all, but I am better and I will be taking it more easily for the next month or so, you three, Steve, Chas and the second twins are coming to the Tiernsee, while Mike, Cecil and the first twins will be staying with Auntie Madge.”
“That will be nice,” said Margot listlessly, more because she felt she had to say something than because she was really interested.
“Margot,” said Jo gently; “I need to talk to you about this term past.”
At those words Margot jerked up her head. “Wwwhy?” she stammered.
“Papa told me what happened,” said Jo quietly, “and I wanted to say how disappointed in you I am. I will say though that you really seem as though you’re trying to pull up after this, which I am grateful for. I only wish you found another way to pull up than by doing what you did.”
It was impossible for Margot to go any redder. The disappointment in her Mother’s voice was more than she could bare and she broke down crying in her Mother’s arms.
“I wish I were a better person,” she gasped out. “Len doesn’t want to be friends with me and I nearly lost Emmy over it all. She couldn’t believe what I did and didn’t want anything to do with me for a week. I feel like I can never make up for it.”
“Maybe you can’t,” said Joey surprisingly, “but we’ve all done or said things we’re bitterly ashamed of. None of us are perfect, but trying to change from this will go a long way to putting things right. I’m sure Len will forgive you,” said Joey gently, “She may just need time to deal with everything and that’s something you will need to learn how to give.” Margot nodded sadly,
“Thanks Mama,” she managed. Joey gave her hug and left the room.

Joey knocked on Len’s bedroom door,
“Come in,” called Len.
“Hi Len, I just thought we could have a talk about Carnbach,” Joey started to say when she realized Con was also in the room. “I’m sorry am I interrupting?” she asked.
“No,” said Len, “we were just talking about school.”
What Len didn’t say was that it was about Carnbach not the school next door.
Joey took a deep breath, “Len, Con, Papa told me what happened between Margot and Ted this term and I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
Con and Len stared at their Mother stunned.
“What?” Said Len,
“Oh,” said Con. ‘This will be interesting,’ she thought. A part of Con could always emotionally detach herself from a situation and objectively observe what was going on around her.
“Are you and Papa mad?” asked Len worriedly, thinking ‘what have I caused?’
“No, we’re not ‘mad’,” said Joey with a grin. “We did talk a lot about everything. We haven’t made a decision about Carnbach but we can both understand why you want to go. What about you Con?” she asked swinging to her second daughter.
Con shook her head. “I wouldn’t mind going but I think Len needs to go on her own. She needs a break from being Len Maynard, niece of the founder, daughter of the first pupil, one of the Maynard triplets and oldest of the family.”
Joey looked at Con thoughtfully. She’s really grown up through this she thought,
“I can see how that would be hard.” Said Joey “
And,” said Con with a straight look at her Mother, “I think she needs a break from Margot. To be able to relax and make friends without worrying about Margot interfering or being nasty to them.”
“Is that fair on Margot? She is trying” said Joey gently.
Len went red. “I, I, I stammered Len incoherently.
“I think Len should be allowed to worry about her own feelings without being told that she has to consider Margot’s all the time or told she isn’t being fair,” said Con firmly. “Once she’s had a break of worrying about it it’s easier to continue. Margot also knows she can get away with a lot more from Len, whereas she knows I’ll say what I think. And,” she announced, “Margot did try to break up Ted and Len’s friendship a lot more than mine with Ricki or Odette.”
“Doesn’t that show that Margot’s won,” said Joey, interested in this new astute Con, not realizing she was talking to Con as an equal. She had never seen this side of Con before. Con gave her a straight look,
“Not if she’s truly trying to reform," she said, "otherwise, she’s as nasty as what she was and Len’s better off being away from her. But,” she added “I think Margot’s learnt her lesson and won’t do that again.”
Joey was flabbergasted by Con. “So you think Len should go then.”
Con nodded.
“Well,” said Joey, “You’ve certainly given me a lot to think about. Even if Papa and I say you can go,” said Joey looking at Len, “A lot will depend on the Head. I’ll do my best and saints can’t do more.”
“Thanks Mama,” said Len gratefully.
‘I wonder what Margot will make of all this,’ thought Joey as she left the room, but resolved to leave it between the girls. When Joey had left Len turned on Con,
“I can speak for myself you know. The two of you were talking like I wasn’t here,” she complained.
“I know,” said Con placidly, “but sometimes you need someone standing up for you.”
“Yes Mama,” said Len with becoming meekness and the two caught each other’s eyes and burst out laughing.
“I just hope the Head agrees. If she doesn’t I’ll just put you onto her,” said Len wickedly. Len was feeling much happier and more relaxed than she had in a long time.
Con made a face, “Like the Head will be intimidated by me,” was all she said.

“Jack,” said Joey that night, “We do need to make a decision about Len going to Carnbach.”
“I know,” said Jack with a sigh. He was still feeling emotionally drained and just wanted a break from everything. “What do you think?” He asked.
“Well, all the reasons she gave were pretty reasonable,” said Joey thoughtfully. “I think it’s been hard for the girls. There’s a lot more expectations on them and I think Len feels it a lot more than the others. This thing with Margot I think compounded a lot of that. It won’t hurt her to have a break from the others and will probably be good for her.”
“And Con?” asked Jack.
“Con did all the talking,” said Joey with a grin.
“There’s nothing new in that,” replied Jack, “she always did let things out a lot more.”
"I know," said Joey reflectively, “but this was different somehow. I think she’s grown up a lot through it all.”
"Okay,” said Jack, “We do need to talk to Hilda about it and whoever the Head is at Carnbach and make sure the school is okay with it all.”
Joey nodded "I’ll do that tomorrow.” She said. “How did the walk go?”
“Oh,” said Jack rousing himself, “All right I think. I found it fun, in fact,” he added thoughtfully, “I think I might take the boys to school this year. It’s Mike’s first term and I think we could go away for a ‘boys’ only holiday for a few days on the way.”
“Why not?” Agreed Jo. “I think they’d enjoy that. Anyway I think it’s time you went to bed. You look all done in.”
Jack agreed and was touched by Joey’s caring. He was feeling like he couldn’t make a decision about himself at all he was that exhausted. Joey made sure he got a sleep in the next morning and Jack felt all the better for it.

One thing I was concerned about in writing Con was that she was speaking up a lot more. I'll stand by her at least thingking these thoughts and a lot of people such as OOAOML said that she tended to sit back and then bang would come out with this kind of stuff. My thought is that the past term may have pushed her to speak a lot more about stuff, especially in relation to both sisters, especially when they had gone through such a life changing event that affected their relationship to the extent I think it would have and Con always did tend to speak her mind

“Well I better go see Hilda,” she said at breakfast,
“and I’ll be at the San all day, said Jack. “What time’s Madge leaving with the kids?” He asked.
“Not for another hour. The kids are finishing packing the last of their favourite toys and things,” replied Jo.
“I’ll go say good-bye before I go then,” said Jack. “I’ll see you tonight. Thanks Joey, I needed that sleep-in.”
He kissed her good bye and then went to say good-bye to the kids. Felicity was in the process of trying to cram all her stuffed toys and dollies in a suitcase.
“That won’t fit,” said her twin staring at the suitcase. “Papa,” said Felix turning when Jack entered the room, “Felicity’s can’t close her case.” Jack gently took it off her.
“Do you really need all this?” he asked.
“Yes I really do Papa,” said Felicity. “I can’t sleep without any of them.” Jack surveyed the case.
“Hmm,” he said, “well I think this calls for a very delicate operation,” he said in mock seriousness.
Felix and Felicity started to giggle.
“Have you got one for your night case? Then I think we could probably fit one in there,” said Jack when Felicity shook her head. Jack carefully tried to pack all the soft toys in.
“I don’t think your going to be able to fit it all Papa,” said Felix.
Felicity looked like crying at this.
“Don’t worry,” comforted her father,
“Uncle Jem can dress Felix in a panda suit and he can be a giant soft toy for you to sleep with.”
Felicity started to laugh at this,
“Your silly Papa,” she said,
While Felix seemed entranced at the idea of dressing up.
“There,” said Jack, “They all fit,” and he snapped the case shut. “They may be a bit squashed, but I think they’ll make the journey.
Felicity looked thrilled and murmured a thank you.
“Are the rest of you packed?” asked Jack. Mike nodded. “I’ll miss you all. Be good for Auntie Madge and we’ll see you in a few weeks.”
He hugged all his children good-bye.
“Good-bye Papa,” they chorused, “We will.”
Part of Jack felt bad about the younger ones going away, especially so soon after everything that had happened. He paused at the door, and made a decision.
“Mike,” he said gently, “Would you walk me to the car please?” Mike followed him out,
“What is it Papa?” he asked.
“I was thinking, I would take you to school. It’s your first term and I thought You, Chas, Steve and I could spend a few days together in Guernsey, before you started. It’ll be a big boys trip.”
Mike stared.
“What do you think?” Asked Jack wondering if the boys would think it was a terrible idea. He couldn’t blame them if they didn’t want to spend time with him.
“Oh Papa, that’ll be so much fun.”
Being called a big boy and included on a trip like this made Mike’s day. Jack smiled.
“Good, I’m glad. Now I haven’t talked to Steve and Chas about it yet, only Mama, so we’ll organize it a lot more when you get back. I needed to know if you liked the idea.”
“Oh I do,” breathed Mike, dreaming of the holiday already.
“Good,” said Jack hugging his son. “Have fun okay.”
“I will Papa,” Mike promised.

Joey rang Hilda and organized to see her for morning coffee. Hilda usually stayed a week to ten days after the end of every tern, finishing up all the odds and ends that needed doing at the end of every school year. She was heading off in the next couple of days with Nell Wilson.
“What seems to be the problem Joey?” asked Hilda when she and Joey were settled with coffee and biscuits.
“What makes you think there’s a problem?” asked Joey with a grin. She was feeling nervous. She didn’t know if Hilda would agree to the idea of Len going to Carnbach and hoped for her daughter’s sake the Head would agree.
“Because, you don’t usually announce your coming over unless you have news to tell,” announced Hilda.
“Your right,” replied Joey, “I do.” She took a deep breath, “I would like to transfer Len to the Carnbach branch please.”
Whatever else Hilda was expecting, it wasn’t that.
“May I ask why?” queried Hilda, to give herself time to think. Joey looked at her directly.
“Hilda, with everything that happened between Margot and Ted last term, Len’s decided she needs a break. Jack and I agreed to give her one.” Hilda stared at her.
“It can be for a term or a year,” added Joey, “that’s up to what the school decides. Well Hilda?” asked Joey impatiently, when Hilda still hadn’t said anything.
“I didn’t expect that,” was all she said.
She had never expected for Joey to find out what had happened the previous term but wisely decided not to ask. If Jack, changed his mind and tell Joey, then that was between the two of them.
“What does Jack think?” She questioned.
“Jack agrees,” said Joey steadily, looking Hilda in the eye. Hilda viewed Joey thoughtfully. ‘She’s grown up’ she thought.
“Well,” she said aloud. “I need to talk to Dollie Edwards, but I can’t see why not if they have room. Academically, the school is on par with each other, so Len would go directly into Va.”
“When will know?” asked Joey relieved Hilda had not probed too deeply. “I’ll do it today and get the prospectus sent out today. You do realize they kept to the old uniform?”
Joey nodded. “Marie’s daughter Josefa goes there. I’m sure she’ll have old ones she out grew. If not her, there is bound to be someone who does.”
“Well, I’ll let you know when I find out more.” Joey stood, “thanks Hilda, I appreciate that” and left the room.
Hilda stared into space after Joey left, she didn’t know what to think. It could be the best thing for Len having this break. It would allow her to form the habit of not always rushing to her sisters aid; it would allow Con to be herself and not always overshadowed by Len; and if anything was going to hit home to Margot more about her behaviour, then the fact Len wanted to spend up to a year away from her would. She rang for Rosalie and asked her to book the call to Carnbach.
Dollie Edwards was surprised to say the least at Hilda’s request. “We could fit her in,” she said thinking about Va. “I think there are only 18 girls in that form, so it won’t overfill it. We did lose Prudence, Priscilla and Primrose last year. I think it’s a fair exchange,” she said with a grin. “From what I remember about Len she’s a pretty well behaved child. What made her decide to do this?” she asked
Hilda thought for a moment and came to a decision. She briefly outlined what had happened to the triplets the previous term. She knew it would not be fair on Dollie Edwards not to know the obvious under currents of the situation. And knew Dollie would keep the information confidential.
"Poor you said Dollie sympathetically, "That would have been a difficult thing to deal with. No wonder Len wants a break. I wonder why Con doesn't?"
"I think she handled Margot's behaviour better. She did come and talk to me about it at one point," said Hilda slowly, "But in all honesty, she's in a dream most the time, though that is certainly better than it used to be. You do realize it’s only for a year at the most," reminded Hilda.
“I’d give it a term,” said Miss Edwards surprisingly.
“Why?” asked Hilda surprised.
“That’ll be all she needs, after everything you’ve told me. She only needs to get in the grove of not worrying about her sister. And three months should see to that,” prophesied Dollie.
“Perhaps your right. I guess we’ll wait and see. Thanks Dollie. I do appreciate it,” said Hilda.
“Your welcome,” returned Dollie, “I’ll send all the information she’s likely to need out to her.” And rang off.
Hilda sat back. It looked like Len was the newest pupil at Carnbach for next term.

I hope Len has a great time at Carnbach. It should be wonderful for her, being away from her family's reputation.

Thanks Fiona.

Pleased that Hilda was able to arrange for Len's transfer without any difficulty. Hope she soon realises that Con is not always in a dream - she's probably the most mature of the triplets at the moment.

Thanks Fiona.

Two updates! So good to see Jack handling the twins so nicely, and giving Mike something to look forward to. And Hilda handled Joey's request very wisely.

Well this is the last update, or end of Part one. I will start on the next part which will be more or less about Len at Carnbach. In response to the observations of Hilda's comments about Con; I don't think Hilda ever see's Con as being anything more than in a dream, Beacause in Challenge, it took the entire staff to convince her Con could be Magazine Prefect. Hilda thought Con would be too dreamy to cope, so I couldn't really let her see past that. Anyway thanks for all the comments, I've really enjoyed writing this and will start the second part sometime soon

Len was thrilled, when she was given the news, she was going to Carnbach.
“Auntie Hilda said you, may have either a year, or a term. It’s up to you. There’s space at both schools.” Announced Joey
“Thanks Mama,” said Len happily. “I really appreciate it.”
“Your welcome,” said Joey with a grin, “I’ll leave you to tell your sisters.” Len sped off, both her sister’s were packing for their holiday and Len decided to tell them together. So far Margot did not know that Len had asked to go to Carnbach. She knew Margot would be upset about that but thought ‘I don’t care. I’m sick of worrying about her feelings.’ Len burst into Con’s room.
“I’ve got some great news,” she said, “Come on, I’ll tell you both together.”
And whirled out again. Con followed, guessing what the ‘great news’ was and wondered how Margot would take it. Margot was surprised when both Len and Con entered her room. Len had had little to do with her since half term.
“What is it she?” asked, hope flaring in her eyes.
“I asked Mama and Papa if I could go to Carnbach next term and they said yes,” announced Len bluntly. “The Head has agreed.”
Whatever else Margot was expecting it wasn’t that. Len will never forgive me thought Margot dejectedly. She was about to say ‘what about me’ when she saw Con’s eyes on her and realized that Con knew that Len had wanted to do this. It was a bitter moment when she realized Len was starting to shut her out and after her behaviour if she was honest she couldn’t blame her.
Her Mother’s word flashed before her ‘She may just need time to deal with everything and that’s something you will need to learn how to give.’ Len was starting to eye Margot in a way she didn’t like but had to admit she deserved.
Margot sighed. “Len, I know my behaviour wasn’t all it should be this term and I’m truly sorry for hurting you. I can’t blame you for not wanting to be around me, I wouldn’t either. If you like I could go to Carnbach so don’t have to leave your friends,” she offered. “If that’s what you need, I’ll do that for you.”
Len had mentally built herself up for a scene with her sister was shocked. She and Con knew how much Margot had hated the bare thought of going to Carnbach and how hard she had worked to be able to go to Switzerland with her and Con.
“Oh Margot,” said Len melting at the offer. It had truly showed her Margot was trying to think of her. “Part of it’s that but part of it is also I’m tired of being one of the Maynard’s. This will give me a chance to be me on my own away from everyone.”
Margot gave a funny smile, remembering Canada, “If that’s what you truly want.” She said.
“It is,” said Len giving Margot a hug.
“Oh guys this is so touching,” said Con wiping away imaginary tears.
“Idiot,” said Len and Margot together. And the three laughed together. Later, Con saw Margot.
“Thanks for making that offer,” she said. “I know Len was touched.”
“I wanted to make it up to her,” said Margot in a low voice.
“Well you did,” said Con with a grin.
“That was your idea about Carnbach,” said Margot changing the subject. Con nodded.
“I didn’t think Len would ever allow herself to do something that she wanted to do like that," observed Con, "It’s also what you want to do.”
“Sometimes,” admitted Con, “Perhaps when Len comes back I will.”
“Thanks Con,” said Margot quietly, “I don’t think I could have gotten through the last couple of months without you.”
“You’re my sister Margot, I’ll always be there for you,” said Con gently.
“I know,” nodded Margot. “Well, it’ll certainly be interesting without Len next term.”
“That it will,” agreed Con.
THE END

Yes, I'm wondering how Len will ever be treated as an ordinary schoolgirl and not one of the Maynards.
