Walking away from the School, he dragged a hand through his hair, not caring in the least that he now resembled a demented scarecrow. He tried to order his thoughts and failed. Every time he saw her, she played havoc with his heart and his mind, never mind his stomach, which was still jumping from shaking her hand good-bye.
The first time he’d felt something for her, he’d been shocked; she was, after all, just a school-girl. He’d dismissed it as a mad one-off thought - but then he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her. And when he saw her next, with her black hair tussled as usual, and a loving smile on her face as she watched the Robin playing in the meadows with some of the other girls he had wished that he would look at him that way. He’d mentally smacked himself around the head for it but it hadn’t helped at all. Nothing helped anymore. That his mind was telling him that in past centuries girls had been married at that age did not make it any better. In fact, it wasn’t any justification at all.
He swore at himself beneath his breath. He had fallen head-over-heels in love with a school-girl over ten years younger than himself. What kind of an awful person did that make him, he wondered, as he trudged up the mountain path towards the Sonnalpe. Maybe he should simply not visit the School anymore. But the hurt that thought caused made him shy away from this solution to his problem. Not seeing her would be infinitely worse than seeing her but not being able to tell her what he felt. Of course there was no way that he could tell her, she was far too young, and his boss would have his hide, besides.
Maybe, if he was patient and waited for her finish school, then he could speak. He could allow himself that much hope; after all, apart from the other doctors, how many eligible young men were there around here? And he couldn’t see her leaving her sister or her sister leaving the School, so she would be here. He’d just have to be very, very patient.
He looked at the steep path ahead of him and wondered just how long it would take him to get to the top.
