He looked at the child and saw a sharp pointy face with an untidy cap of straight black hair, noted the pallor of the hollow cheeks. Large black eyes seemed to take up most of her face and sparkled with an intense hunger for life and knowledge. She was thin and showed that she would be tall one day. Certainly not a pretty child, but striking for all that. Plenty of character and a strong will to match her weak body. Delicate-looking kid, he thought, I’ll have to keep my eye on her, see that she doesn’t outgrow her strength.

Another doctor, she reflected. But with the San so close and them the only other English people around it wasn’t surprising they visited the school. At least this one looked jolly. Not as old as the other doctors and he seemed nice enough. But he, too, had this look in his eye that she’d come to recognise. He’d want to wrap her in cotton-wool like everyone else. Well, she would not be wrapped up and she would not exceed her strength. Delicate, how she hated that word. If she ever married she’d have eleven children just to show them all.
