We'll tell Her Together

'Sit down, Madge,' Jem said seriously. 'I have something to tell you.'

He watched her closely, and broke the awful news as gently as he could. He knew this was going to change things for all of them forever.

Madge stared at him, shocked and horrified. Her hands flew to her face and she sat, still and uncomprehending.
'But...but...' She shook her head in disbelief. 'What happened?' she asked hoarsley, her brown eyes wide with shock.

'The rope broke,' he answered shortly, and shrugged his shoulders helplessly. He swallowed hard. 'Nothing anyone could do. Mercifully, it was a quick death.'

Madge's thoughts turned to the young girl who had suffered enough already. Tears flowed, unnoticed, down her cheeks .

'Oh, Jem,' she whispered helplessly. 'How on earth am I to tell her? Will she even understand? He was all she had left in the whole world. Oh, the poor baby!'

'We'll tell her together, dearest,' said Jem sadly. 'We are all she has left in this world now. She is ours, and we are hers, for better or worse. May we never fail her.'

And together they stood, and, with very heavy hearts, climbed the stairs to the Robin's bedroom.

Thanks, Mollio. I always felt EBD was too concerned to show how good Jem and Madge were to Robin, so she neglected to think about how the child would have felt.
