Hilda scrutinised the glowing faces of the couple who stood before her. The man was smiling happily but his pretty companion seemed sad, for all her bashful radiance.

“So, Jock,” said the Head quietly, “you are come to take her away from us.” When he grinned unrepentantly, Hilda rose lightly to her feet and moved over to take Con Stewart’s hands. “You shall have your release, dear, though you will be sorely missed.”

“But what about Nell? I can’t just go without saying goodbye…..” whispered Con, a stricken look in her eyes.

“You have no choice, Con. Thanks to Hitler and his allies, she is gone. As you must go. You belong with Jock now. He is your future.”

The beautiful voice grew soft. “But I beg you not to lose touch with your past, with the best friend you ever had. She loves you, and you must treasure that love, as you treasure Jock’s. If you ever hurt her or neglect her, you will have to answer for it to me some day.”

Con looked into her Head’s implacable eyes and knew she meant every word. She nodded in answer and Hilda drew her close, her words a soft whisper.

“Go with God, my dear, and be happy.”

That was lovely, Mary. It's such a shame that Con and Nell never did seem to keep in touch after Con's marriage.

A lovely little vignette, Mary, and a telling reminder of how the tentacles of War affected 'ordinary' people's lives - thank you. I agree with Alison that it's a shame Con didn't really keep in touch with Nell after Con's marriage. Wonder if she ever *did* have to answer to Hilda for this?

So much there to think about - Jock delighted that he can now marry Con, Con happy but aware of what she is giving up, and Hilda understanding only too well how the future might work out.

And Hilda's right - love is to be treasured, however and wherever it comes.

That was lovely Mary - thank you for another insight into the way that Hilda manages her staff, and of her deep love for Nell.

That's lovely, Mary. Poor Con, awful to have to go without saying goodbye. It's strange how she disappears from the books. She's moved out of the community, of course, and it's EBD's fault, not Con's (!), but it's hard to forgive her for her desertion of Nell, all the same.

poor Con - I wonder why she lost touch so completely? That was a lovely picture of Hilda - so understanding and wise.

She seems to keep in touch with Joey!! Certainly once Emerence is at the school. She even buys Joey a present - a shawl from Madeira - at some point in the future. & it's Joey whom Miss Carthew gets in touch with over Ted, even though Joey was only about 16 when Miss Carthew left and - although history was Joey's favourite subject - surely Miss Carthew would've been more friendly with Madge or Nell than with Joey.

Hmm Rolling Eyes .

Thank you Mary!
Very touching episode there.

I was thinking about the writing to Joey incident re Emerence (not sure that really makes sense but hey ho!!) after reading Shocks and always wondered why Joey got the letters!
