Something icky and sweet for Friday afternoon!

Silence.

She felt the silence of the little room, with its one window looking out onto the garden, wrap around her like a blanket. After the long hours of pain, sweat and noise the quiet of the early evening seemed to soothe away every care. Tired but content, alone for the moment but not really alone, never really alone. She glanced to one side, looked for the thousandth time at the tiny bundle in the high-sided hospital cot. Each time she looked, she felt she was seeing him for the first time. Sleeping peacefully now. Perfect in every way.

She levered herself up and swung her legs over the side of the bed, so she could reach out and lay her hand on the blanket, feel its rise and fall with the rapid breaths. Silently, she made a promise to herself. This child would be loved, would be wanted, would be valued. Unconditionally. She might not be perfect, but she'd do the best she damn well could to give him the childhood that she had been denied.

The long lashes lifted, the lips opened in a cry. Carefully, Grizel bent down and picked up her son.

That was gorgeous Rrose, thank you.

What happened to your old Island drabble? Is that still alive somewhere? Laughing

Ooh, I'd forgotten about that! I just had a look and it's still on my hard drive, so I'll have to see if any more Craggy Island bunnies bite...

I do love this sort of 'snippet' - no padding, no frills, just the heart of the matter - and that was a particularly good one. Thank you Rrose.
