Jo Bettany made her way to her sister’s sitting room, her delicate face showing the strain with which she faced the upcoming interview. In the morning she had decided that sooner is better than later and was seeking her sister as soon as breakfast was over. She tapped at the door and waited apprehensively. “Come in!” A sweet voice said and Jo entered. Madge looked up with a smile while Jo said hastily “I suppose you are busy Madge. I can come another time” with which she was about to escape, but was called back by Madge’s “I am never too busy for you Joey baba! Come and have your chat” Joey came back reluctantly and sat down at the sofa.
“Well, how is the book coming on Joey? Is your heroine still being trouble some?” “Oh it’s coming on splendidly. I am not having any trouble at all” Jo answered absently as she gazed at the beautiful view outside. Then she turned to her sister, a determined look on her face “Madge, I would like to have a serious talk with you. I..”
“I know” Madge interrupted. “It is about Sybil isn’t it? The child has become a bit difficult these days. I should really talk sternly at her. Do you know she had a stand up fight with David yesterday?” Jo sighed and then asked “Is it? What happened?” secretly relieved that her confession is postponed for few more moments. Madge then related about a quarrel the nursery folk had yesterday and how angry she had been. “I really gave them a pretty good piece of my mind I can tell you”
“Good for you” Joey said then, after a bit of hesitation “Madge, I just wanted to..” Again Madge interrupted, apparently jumping to the conclusion that Joey was enquiring about a patient at the san, and launched into a lengthy explanation of the said patient’s condition. By the end of the story, Jo was quite desperate and confused as to how she could do what she had come to do.
Madge put down her work and watched the varying emotions on her little sister’s face with quiet amusement. Then deciding to put her out of her misery, she said “I am really happy for you Jo. May you and Jack have all the happiness in the world” Jo stared open mouthed at her sister. “Madge, you perfect beast! You knew all the time and you let me go through that. I have a good mind to shake you” Then more calmly “But how in the world did you know?”
At this Madge laughed and answered “I am not blind Jo. It was pretty much obvious after the way you and Jack behaved yesterday. Why even a totally thick man could’ve seen what was happening between you two” then she added more seriously “You are more like my daughter than a sister Joey. And mothers do have a way of knowing things you know. I had expected this for some time now and was only hoping for you to grow up and realise what you really felt for Jack.” Then pulling her sister close she kissed on her forehead “I am so glad darling! And I hope you will be as happy and contented as I have been. As I am”
Jo sat down at her sisters feet like she always used to do and buried her face in her sister’s lap. Madge ruffled the dark hair affectionately. After a few moments Jo looked up and fixed her eyes on the sister she adored. “Madge, I am so happy about this. I now know that nothing else could’ve been right for me. This was meant to happen. I can’t tell you how truly happy I am. But..” Jo paused. “But what Jo?” Madge probed gently.
“But what about us Madge? Does this, will this change anything?”
“Of course not. Did my marriage to Jem change the way I loved you? Rather, Jem was like an additional brother and father to you was he not?” “Rather.” Jo nodded her head vigorously. “Well then remember Jo. Who ever comes later into our life and hearts, what ever relationships we make, the bond between us, me and you and Dick will never suffer. Nobody will change what we mean to each other, ever in our lives.” Jo took this in and then said, a little tremor in her voice “You are all the mother I have ever had. I love you so much Madge” “I love you too Joey, baba” Madge replied softly, holding her sister close.
At the sound of Jem’s voice floating up the stairs, they pulled apart, Madge getting up to go and answer her husband.
“In that case, I am the happiest woman on earth. And not even old Hitler and all his Gestapo could make me any less so” Joey called after her with a grin before settling back to enjoy a new book that she had been gifted just a few days back.

I haven't read anything about how Jo tells Madge about her engagement. Hence tried this.
The relationship between Madge and Jo had been the reason why I had first started with the Chalet School Books. That's also one of the reasons why I like the Tyrol books the best. It's so sad that Madge faded into background later in the series, and their relationship was mentioned rarely, if at all. Sad

Thanks, Aparna. I think the realationship between Madge and Jo was one of the things that made the Tyrol books so good, and it was sad to see Madge dwindling into an appendix, instead of remaining a major character.
