Not absolutely sure if this will qualify - as it's not finished and I plan parts two and probably more. If it's not thought to be suitable Mia could you let me know and I'll withdraw it and re post as a separate drabble?

“So we would like, Hilda, to offer you the post of Senior Mistress,” Madge Russell said.

Miss Annersley looked surprised. Before she could say anything the Headmistress spoke, “We appreciate this is a shock, we didn’t expect Mollie to leave so soon,”

“That isn’t the reason for my surprise, Therese,” Hilda put in, “I was expecting Nell Wilson to be appointed,”

“You two were both considered,” Madge admitted, “we felt you were more suitable.”

“Finally, as we no longer have Mollie Maynard,” Mdlle Lepattre concluded, “we have appointed Hilda Annersley as Senior Mistress, please give her all the support that you give to me.”

There was a split second’s stunned silence before any reaction, Con Stewart was first to leap across and pound the English Mistress on the back, the rest of the Staff losing no time in joining her and surrounding the tall, quiet woman to offer their congratulations. Later, when the rest had left Matron spoke,

“Congratulations, Hilda, I’ll just echo everyone else and say you’re the best one for the job,”

Miss Annersley looked up, her eyes dark, “Not quite everyone, Matey,” she said softly, “one person has said nothing, she left the room immediately, Nell.”

I wonder why Hilda was chosen above her.

Thanks, Lesley. It is interesting to see how Hilda was appointed for the job and to see Nell's reaction.

I'm fascinated that Con, Nell's friend, didn't think twice but was the first to congratulate Hilda. Does she know something we don't?

Thanks, Lesley.

Oh, fascinating....I wonder, did Nell have to struggle with this? I can think why the appointment was made that way round, but it might have been hard for Nell to accept at that point.

Thank you, Lesley - this looks very interesting.
I wondered if Con Stewart's quick reaction was to cover up the "stunned silence" rather than because she'd been expecting it - however, we shall see!

I'm so glad you're tackling this, Lesley. I've often thought it was quite hard for Nell to have to be 'not quite the boss' all the time, when in any other situation she'd be an obvious leader. Hilda's appointment turned out to be totally right, but it wasn't obvious at the time, Nell would have seemed the obvious choice. Just realised I've used 'obvious' three times, but am too tired to care!

I'm a bit surprised at Con's reaction, too. I'm waiting eagerly for more - and please don't confine yourself to a short drabble, move it and give yourself room to expand!

*echoes Pat*. This is really interesting, and not something I'd thought much about before, but I guess the decision must have hurt Nell a bit. Looking forward to seeing her reaction.

What a double edged sword. It must be really hard to be so happy in that position when you know that your friend is upset. Thank you
*also hopes for more*

This is very good. I was never surpised that Hilda got the job - she was older, more experienced and had the quiet dignity suitable for a Head. Nell was good too, but more of a 'character' than Head material. Why shouldn't Con congratulate Hilda? If her best friend is being petulant, that's nothing to her. Good for Con!
