I can't seem to find any specific references in New House as to exactly when Matron Besly took her departure (other than that she was due to leave at the end of term) so I hope this isn't too far off the wall.

Coming out of St Clare's, Jo Bettany saw the figure of Matron Besly in the distance. Matron was carrying her nightcase and Jo realised that she was leaving the school. The headgirl felt a twinge of guilt. She and Matron had been at daggers drawn from day one and Jo wondered if there was anything she could have done to make Matron's life easier. Impulsively, Jo set off at a run and caught up with the older woman.

“Matron, I’m most awfully sorry we got off on the wrong foot. I hope you’ll be happy in your new post.”

Matron looked at Jo haughtily, suspecting the girl of making fun of her but Jo’s serious face convinced her that the headgirl was genuine. Matron managed a weak smile.

“I think the Chalet School was as wrong for me as I was for the School,” she admitted, “but it’s a fine school, Jo. You’re lucky to have been a pupil here.”

Jo held out her hand and Matron shook it before giving the girl a final smile and setting off for Spartz. Jo watched her figure until it had disappeared and she returned to St Clare’s with a happier heart.

Aw, I liked that. Smile Poor Matron Besly - she annoyed me, but I did feel sorry for her.

At least things finished well; maybe she didn't leave with quite such a bad taste in her mouth as I always thought she might have done! Thanks, Sue.

I like that, it needed to be done. Though no charitable good-bye to Matron Webb please!

That definitely showed Jo as a mature young woman, rather than the child we see until the end of Exile - thank you Leahbelle!
