Nobody had noticed Biddy slip away when the post had arrived, clutching an envelope tightly in her hand, engrossed as they were with their own. She looked nervously at the envelope, part of her too scared to open it.

“Pull yourself together, Bridget O’Ryan,” she told herself firmly. “ ‘Tis no good you’ll be if you’re scared of an envelope.”

Giving herself a mental shake, she ripped open the envelope in one swift movement and removed the letter it contained. Her eyes anxiously scanned its contents three times, not quite able to believe what they were reading.

“I’ve done it,” she whispered to herself, reading through the letter for a fourth time. “I’ve really done it and I’ll make you all proud – every single one of you who believed in me.”

With a cry of delight, she ran off to share the good news that she, Bridget O’Ryan, had got her scholarship for the three promised years at Oxford to read for her B.A.
