My entry for Mia's challenge. Italics are EBD's words.

Goodbye, girls — Joey-baba, take care of yourself.’ He held Jo close for a moment, murmuring something in her ear.

‘I’m proud of you Jo,’ and Joey could tell from his quiet faltering voice that he meant it. ‘Both Madge and I are, we love you.’

Joey felt the back of her eyes prick as he ended, and fought to prevent the tears from falling, though she acknowledged the words that meant so much with a slight nod.

‘Now you mustn’t worry about us, I will take good care of Madge, of all the family and those friends I can. You must focus your journey, it won’t be easy and you will need you to be strong for everyone.

There was a pause then Joey realised he was smiling. ‘You have Jack now but it’s been a pleasure to have shared responsibility for you. God bless you and we will see you very soon in happier times.

Then he released her, and departed. They heard his footsteps dying away down the passage, and they were alone again. Jo, with a startled expression on her face, turned to helping to clear up, for they must leave no traces of their presence here.
