#1: Maurice's Dream - Complete Author: AllyLocation: John Bettany's Cabin! PostPosted: Fri Aug 25, 2006 7:19 pm

Well I seem to have written about the last Bettany boy now, so forming a sort of trilogy to be read with Rix Goes To India and Jackie's Great Escape both which can be found in the archives.

Maurice Bettany sat crossed legged on the veranda, protected from the afternoon sunshine, his mop of straight black hair seemingly hidden in his school book but the reality was a very different thing. Maurice was bored.

He couldn’t get his mind off the fact that at this moment he was alone and that everyone else was busy, oh how he wished for more company, especially when there were all those brothers and sisters back in England who would have played with him.

In a few hours time his father would be home from work and then in the cool of the evening they might play cricket, and perhaps Dravid his father’s bearer would join them too. It was always more fun with three and Dravid bowled a deceptive leg break that Maurice loved to face, but that was the future and he was bored now!

His twin sister Maeve had finished all her school work much earlier and was now helping Mummy in the kitchen. It was their cook’s half day and with the kitchen free they always baked scrumptious treats together. So Maurice was quite alone with only the chirrup of the crickets for company and soon he let his mind wander away from his work back to his favourite daydream.

He had seen pictures of his siblings of course and Mummy and Daddy talked about them quite often, though as he had grown older he had come to realise just how long ago it had been since Mummy and Daddy had seen them. He liked to think about his brothers the most as they could do more exciting than girls, though of course he had to admit that Maeve wasn’t bad.

So Maurice had built up a strong idea of what his brothers were like, and he liked to dream about the fun they would have. Rix he knew was into cricket and Rugger at school and would be a good test for him, and Jackie would like exploring. In the day he saw them playing board games or hide and seek in the cool of the house and in the evening what fun they would have camping, exploring and playing sports, all together, even Daddy too.

He wanted to see them! Suddenly he determined he was going to do something about it! Tonight before he went to bed he would pack all his belongings and then the next morning he would tell his parents of his intentions to go to England and see his siblings. He was almost grown up now and he would show his parents how determined he was. He would miss them and Maeve of course but it wouldn’t be forever. He would promise to come back.

At this resolution Maurice felt a thrill of excitement and quite happily passed what remained of the afternoon reading his book. Before he knew where the time had gone it was tea time. Then afterwards just as he had hoped, Daddy took him for a game of cricket. Darvid played too and even Maeve joined in. She might be a girl but at least she could catch.

So that evening he packed his things as planned but things didn’t go quite according to plan as the next morning and awoke with a start as he heard his named called.

‘Maurice, Maurice dear, oh good you are awake. I have the most wonderful news, what do you think it is?’

Maurice sleepily stared at his mother for a few minutes and she smiled and took pity on him.

‘Maurice darling, Daddy just had a telegram from England. Guess what, we are going home!’

‘But-but…we are?’ Maurice managed to stammer. ‘Really truly?’

‘Really truly. We won’t be able to leave for a few months I’m afraid but we are. Isn’t it thrilling.’

Maurice’s beaming smile told what he thought of that, and he gave his mother a huge hug as he realised his dream had come true.
