Margot Maynard slipped out along the path without looking back. She was counting on nobody noticing her absence, and her triplets had agreed to cover for her in the unlikely event that a mistress realised she was missing.

“Len, Con, I simply must get away for a little while, just an hour, please. I need to think and I just can’t do it here, among all this crowd”. With a sweep of one arm she had indicated the rest of their form, as well as pupils further down the school, milling around the grounds, chatting and laughing in the sunshine. It was Saturday afternoon and this was free time for everyone, the Prefects keeping an eye on the proceedings as most people discussed their forms’ efforts for the forthcoming Sale.

Margot’s sisters had looked at her pale, agitated face, and at each other, and then nodded. They watched as she slipped off around the corner of the school, each wondering silently what was the matter.

As she left the school behind her, and the path began to climb more steeply, Margot began to relax and look around her, though her mind was still occupied with thoughts of her future. For some time now she had been realising that she may have a vocation, and frankly, the thought of it terrified her. She had long been labelled in her family as the ‘wild one’, a naughty girl - with a devil she conveniently blamed for all her misdeeds. Surely naughty children could not serve God effectively, she thought as she walked along. And yet… and yet… there was the thought, in her mind and she could not seem to shake it - that she would one day join an Order and be a missionary. But how could that be? And did she have the courage to follow it through? What would her friends say, and her family, when she told them? Her head was spinning with thoughts and for a while she hardly noticed her surroundings at all as she climbed the path, bending her knees automatically as she went.

When she had been walking for about half an hour, she sank down onto a rock by the side of the path. She closed her eyes for a moment, tired with the climb, and while her eyes were closed she found herself praying. “Father, show me the way. I think I know what you are asking me to do, and I think I want to do it, but I’m scared. I don’t know if I can. I’m not good enough to be a missionary, I never have been.” She sat quietly with her eyes still closed as tears seeped under her lashes and trickled down her pale cheeks.

When she opened her eyes, she was suddenly aware of the view. Mountains surrounded her, pointing upwards to the sky, and in front of her there was a break in the hills and she could see down to where the tiny houses dotted the landscape, looking like a toy village. She was filled with a sense of overwhelming peace, and a feeling of being a very small part of a huge created world.

The words of a Psalm came into Margot’s mind. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” And as Margot sat there, looking at her God’s creation, and pondering her future, she knew without a shadow of a doubt that her vocation was real, and that she need not fear. The hand that made this world, these hills and this view, would hold her safe as she went forward into the life she knew she was meant for.

As she descended the hill to return to school, Margot felt as though a weight had lifted from her shoulders, and a peace had settled on her at last. She had made her decision. Her future was settled.
