Jem’s Proposal

Madge heard the peal of the doorbell after Abendessen. A few minutes later Marie showed Dr. Russell into the study.

“Good evening Dr. Russell. Kaffee, bitte, Marie.” This last to the maid waiting at the door.

He began to tell Madge about his plans for a sanatorium on the Sonnalpe. “I’ll have to begin in a small way – just three wards, offices and accommodation for the staff. The builders are going to start as soon as the snow has gone. They’re going to build a chalet for me too.”

“That sounds lonely.”

“It won’t be for long – I don’t want to share my wife with the rest of the staff”, he said with a smile.

Madge was conscious of a sinking feeling.

“I hope you’ll be very happy there.”

Jem realised something wasn’t quite right.

“Miss Bettany, I’m sorry. I don’t think I made myself quite clear. I was hoping that...”, he paused not sure how to go on.

Madge felt a flickering of hope rise inside her.

“Madge, dearest, would you do me the honour of promising to become my wife?”

Madge’s smile was answer enough, and he took her into his arms to seal the agreement.
