I've had this drabble floating around in my head for awhile now and decided to give drabbling a go. I'd love to hear what people think, so feel free to comment. It's set in the same term Biddy O'Ryan is adopted

Maria, Corney, Evvy, and Lonny were wandering back from a Games lesson. It was a hot day and they had had a hard game of Cricket coaching and none of them were inclined to hurry back for Kaffee und Kuchen. A cool breeze was just sarting .

"Oh well," said Evvy idly I don't think our cricket is coming along too badly. "We should play alright against the Saints."
"I certainly hope so," said Corney emphatically, "Nally is pushing us pretty hard."
Pretty Ilonka Barkocz laughed, "Just because she made us do all those sprints to keep fit," she said.
Corney flushed, "Oh, I know it'll help us and we all needed it. It just seems too hot to run today," and Corney fanned herself vigourously with her hat.
"You'd better put that back on," warned Evvy. "Otherwise, Matey will have words. You know what she said last week about getting sunstroke."
Corney hurridly put her hat back on, grumbling about the fussiness of Matey as she did so. All the pupils held Matron Lloyd, known affectionately as 'Matey' and Cornelia was no different.
"It's so hot," she complained.
"It's no worse for you than the rest of us," retorted Evadne Lannis, "So stop your grousing."
All the girls were feeling the heat and were getting fratchety as a result. Ilonka could see an argument starting to brew between Evvy and Corney and asked hastily, "What are you doing Maria? You've been turning around for the last few minutes."
"I thought I could here someone crying," said Maria looking concerned. At that the other 3 stopped walking and listened.
"I think, your going nuts. I can't hear anything," said Corney decidedly.
"Well I can," said Lonny peering off to a clump of tree just outside to grounds, "It sounds like it's coming from over there," she added pointing over to the said tree. and with unspoken agreement the four girls moved off to investigate.

Thanks for all the encouragement

“Biddy,” gasped Lonny as the girls came around the group of trees, “What’s up?”
There sat Biddy O’Ryan hugging her knees to her chest, with tears stained cheeks. “Nothing,” said Biddy valiantly blinking back her tears.
“You can tell us,” coaxed Evvy sitting beside her, “Is anyone being mean to you.”
Biddy looked up into the faces of four of the girls who had helped ‘adopt’ her. “No,” she said and started crying again.
“Don’t cry Biddy said Corney kneeling down beside Biddy taking Biddy’s hot little hand sin to her own. “It’ll be okay; we’ll help you, if we can. Honest we will.”
“Come on Biddy added Evvy persuasively, "It won’t seem so bad if you tell us.”
“I just miss Mam and Giovanni and my baby brother and everyone speaks German at school and has someone who belongs to them and I don’t have anyone and I just wish Mam was here to tell everything too, but she isn’t,” Biddy wailed.
Evvy, Corney, Maria and Lonny all looked at each other. None of them knew what to say as all of them had some kind of family, or someone to belong to. Unexpectedly Corney spoke in an extremely quiet voice.
“Biddy she said softly, I don’t have a Mother either. Mine died when I was baby and so I don’t remember her at all. Poppa didn’t know what to do with me and I know he loves me but I’ve spent most my school life at different schools and it wasn’t until I came here that I felt like I belonged. And it’s hard sometime cos no one really can take the place of your very own Mother though sometime someone can get close like one. Corney finished, going red. She felt extraordinarily shy speaking of her most private thoughts. "And you have us," added Maria in a gentle voice, “I know it's not the same but we have adopted you and you can be our little sister now and tell everything to us. We will help you and be your family.”
“That’s a bully idea, Maria,” said Evvy giving Biddy a cuddle, “I don’t have any sisters and I’ve always wanted one. We can help you with your German. Maria speaks German and she’ll teach you and we’ll help you with the rest, won’t we, she appealed to the others. Corney, Lonny and Maria nodded.
"Of Course," said Lonny, "Any time you need someone we'll be here for you".
“Oh, thank you breathed Biddy, and may the Saints preserve ye. I’ll pay you back or my name’s not Biddy O’Ryan.
"That’s okay," said Evvy hastily. "Do you have your schoolbooks with you?"
Biddy produced an exercise book and Maria started to read it. Biddy not understanding much German had written everything down.
"These are directions for Maths; Biddy," explained Maria and she went through the simple directions. Biddy soon understood and her face was wreathed with smiles.
"Evvy, Lonny, Corney, Maria,” called Elsie Carr. Joey Bettany wants to know if you plan on coming to Kaffee und Kuchen today or tomorrow."
"Oh, crumbs," ejaculated Corney, “Is that the time. You better hop Bids of Teddy will be wondering where you got to. If you need a hand just ask one of us and we’ll help you, okay.” and she gave Biddy a pat on the shoulder, "Don't be shy about it either," she added.
Biddy nodded smiling, “Thanks again,” she called as she ran towards the Le Petit Chalet.

“So how’s Biddy O’Ryan settling into Le Petit Chalet, Dollie,” inquired Miss Wilson idly. She, Mademoiselle LePattre and Miss Edwards were having coffee together. They had been discussing the Guides and Brownies at the Chalet School.
“She seems to be settling in well Nell,” answered Miss Edwards thoughtfully. “I know she had a few weepy moments with missing her mother, step-father and brother but that seems to have settled down now. And she’s doing well at the local village school. Karen made a few extra cakes for her take along to share on her first day and that broke the ice a little with the other children at the school.”
“What?” exclaimed ‘Bill’ sitting upright in her chair.
Miss Edwards nodded. “Karen has developed a soft spot for her. She does have to make her lunch to take to school each day. I know Biddy runs errands and generally helps out. She said it would have been hard starting there, especially with being new to the area and not speaking the language.”
“That is so thoughtful of Karen,” said Therese LaPattre smiling, “How has she managed with learning the language?” She asked.
At this Miss Edwards started to laugh.
“What’s so funny?” asked Nell curiously.
“It seems Biddy has collected some tutors,” she explained and you won’t believe who they are."
“Who?” asked Bill alertly, “From the way your speaking it would be the least likely people. And that would be Corney or Evvy, but it can’t be because Biddy wouldn’t have much to do with the middles. The prefects maybe and I can’t think of any of the juniors who would even think of it.”
“Well you better hold onto your chair, said Miss Edwards, eyes twinkling. “It seems Corney, and Evvy and Co have adopted Biddy and are tutoring her not just in German, but with all her other subjects.” Mademoiselle sat back looking thoughtful while Nell ejaculated, “Well, I hope someone takes it over soon,” she said ruthlessly, “Neither Corney or Evvy are the most academic of students.”
“Nell,” remonstrated Mademoiselle, “I think it very kind of them to give up their free time to help her.”
“It is,” said Nell looking a little shamefaced, “but,” she argued “they aren’t the most hardworking students.”
“It may encourage them to do better, and it is very kind of them to give up their free time for Biddy,” said Mademoiselle firmly. “How did it start Dollie?” “I’m not sure said Miss Edwards slowly. I only know they tend to do it before Kaffee und Kuchen, when Biddy gets back from school. She’s seemed to be late, cos I know Karen was worried about her one day and I went to see where she was and saw Corney, Evvy, Maria and Lonny with her. It seems she had been upset cos she looked like she had been crying. All Biddy would say was how nice they all were, especially Corney.”
“Corny!” exclaimed Nell, while Mademoiselle looked thoughtful.
Miss Edwards nodded, “She wouldn’t say much more than that but she has been late every school day since and I have been watching and it seems those four and Margia and Elsie have been helping her out. They all seem quite protective of. I know it’s helped Biddy because she has been less weepy since then.”
Mademoiselle sat back. “I think it would be good if we could encourage this. It’s good for the older girls to help with the younger ones and these girls will be the leaders of the school one day,” she said finally. “They have their faults but all of them are kind hearted girls. And we want our girls to be kind and to be more thoughtful of others. I think they are a little shy showing that side of themselves. It might be better if they had a place inside to do their tutoring. I think perhaps if you suggest it Miss Edwards in a casual way, then it hopefully would not discourage them. I would like to take note but they may feel pressurized to keep going if I said anything to them officially so to speak. I can always see them a little later on. What do you think Nell?” asked The Head.
“I think so,” nodded Nell, “Your right they are a kind-hearted group but they don’t have a lot of staying power yet, and it sounds as though Biddy is blossoming under their interest, so I would hate for her to miss out. I only hope they don’t teach her all their monkey tricks.”
“I don’t think so,” laughed Miss Edwards, “and anyway she does go to the village school, so I don’t think that will be a problem for us.”
Nell started to laugh, “That does explain something that did baffle me,” she admitted.
“What is it?” asked Mademoiselle. “Oh Evvy asked if the Fourth for could go for their morning walk with Biddy to school. I said yes and didn’t think anything of it until we got to the school and Evvy, Corney, Maria and Lonny wanted to take her inside. I said Evvy and Lonny could, because I didn’t think the teacher would appreciate too many coming in. There were some boys there, which Corney gave the most ferocious look to. Biddy had looked scared of them until Evvy and Lonny stopped and said something but wouldn’t say much at the time. I did manage to get out of them later that a couple of them had been mean to her about living here and not being one of them, the locals I mean, but I think Evvy and the others made it clear that she belonged to us and wouldn’t tolerate any teasing of Biddy.”
“Biddy did seem a little more relaxed when she got home that day.” said Miss Edwards worriedly. “I never thought they would bully Biddy at the school.”
“I don’t think they will any more with Corney and Evvy on the case,” laughed Bill, “And girls there seemed fond of her and it seemed only a couple of the boys seemed on the unpleasant side.”
“We must keep an eye on that,” said Mademoiselle LePattre concerned. “I would hate for Biddy to be having problems like that at her school, or for there to be trouble between the school and the locals”
“I don’t think there will be,” consoled Miss Wilson, “Most around the area like us and we do help them as we can. I don’t think any of them would tolerate bullying either.”
“Anyway,” said Miss Edwards, changing the subject, “I’ll talk to the girls about tutoring Biddy inside and let you know what is happening.”
"Thank you Dollie, that would be good," said Mademoiselle

The girls themselves were discovering problems with tutoring Biddy. She was an apt pupil and learning very quickly, however, Biddy was proud and hated taking anything for nothing as the girls soon learnt.
“Come on Elsie,” said Margia impatiently, “Haven’t you got your mending yet?”
“I can’t find it,” answered Elsie bewildered. “I know it was here two days ago because that was when the button came off.”
“Well it didn’t grow legs and walked,” said Margia.
“You don’t think anyone else has taken it for a joke,” asked Elsie doubtfully, “Corney or Evvy or someone…” her voice trailed off.
“Have either of you two seen my mending,” asked Corney, bursting into the room, eyes sparkling angrily.
“Speaking of which,” murmered Margia.
“No,” answered Elsie, turning around, “but my mending is missing too.”
“Who would have taken it?” asked Corney incredulously, “It’s such a stupid thing to take.”
“Well we better head down or Mademoiselle de Lachenais will say something,” said Elsie with a sigh.
“And,” added Margia, eyes twinkling, “you can help the rest of us with ours.”
“I don’t think so,” retorted Corney emphatically, “If you think that I am going to do your mending for you then you have another thing coming.”
“But how are you going to explain no mending,” pointed out Margia, “No one will believe you have nothing to mend. Elsie can do some of mine and you better help Evvy out unless she’s missing hers.”
Corney shook her head, “No but her mending is done.”
“What?” exclaimed Margia incredulously, “But she tore her blouse on Monday I know cos I was there and Matey said things.”
Elsie took a hand, “I think someone is taking our mending and doing it for us,” she said, her eyes meeting Margia.
“Biddy!” exclaimed Margia.
Elsie nodded, “Who else?” she asked. “You know what she said the other day when we were helping her with her work, she wanted to do something for us and I know we said not to worry about it but I guess she has.”
“The little ape,” said Corney aggrievedly, “ I wish she wouldn’t, I don’t need any more rows than I already get and certainly not over mending.”
“Oh Corney, you would feel the same way and you know it,” returned Margia, “Come on, we better discuss this later.”
So, the girls raced off to get to mending and prep in the Middles form room on time. The Fourth and Fifths tended to do their mending together. The Sixths were trusted to get their prep and mending done without supervision.

“Did you find it?” hissed Evvy when Corney arrived with the others. Corney shook her head. “I’ll tell you later,” she said quietly, “Mademoiselle is looking at us.”
There was nothing more for Elsie or Corney to do, but help the others out with the mending that needed doing and to get on with their prep.
“So what’s going on?” asked Evvy when prep was over and they were all together.
“It looks like Biddy is doing our mending for us,” explained Elsie. “Yours and Margia’s mending were done.”
“What?” said Corney swinging around, “I didn’t think it was.
Margia nodded, “I didn’t see it until I got to the form room,” she said.
“I think it’s the limit,” said Corney heatedly. “If this is what you get for helping someone then I’d rather leave it alone.”
“Corney,” said Evvy, “she’s only trying to help us out and she probably is feeling the way you are now, with us helping her out.”
“I know,” sighed Corney, “But she shouldn’t do it.”
"Well what are we going to do about it?” asked Elsie sensibly. By one accord they all turned to their leader Margia.
“Well I don’t have any bright ideas,” grumbled Margia, “Lonny or Maria might though. Corney, you and Evvy ask them and Elsie and I will talk to Biddy about leaving our mending alone. And get it back,” she added as an afterthought.
“Well good luck,” said Evvy, “I think we may have the easier job.”
“I hope not,” said Corney devoutly.
Corney’s grumpiness was stemming from the fact that she was highly embarrassed about helping Biddy out the way she was and by having talked to her about her own feelings about her Mother, especially in front of everyone else.
“Come on Corney,” coaxed Evvy, “It’ll get sorted out.”
Evvy herself was feeling shy about what Corney had said to Biddy about her Mother. She had wanted to say something but didn’t know what to. Evvy was right they did have an easier time. Biddy proved to be extremely obstinate over helping them, refusing to accept what she saw as charity. It had been hard enough for her to accept the school’s help through Guides let alone any one else’s and she had been determined to help out as much as possible to pay her own way.
“Well can you leave our mending alone, please,” said Elsie despairingly, “We don’t want to get into trouble over any of this.” It was the only thing that did the trick. Biddy didn’t want to get her benefactresses into trouble.
“But Oi will help you out when Oi can,” she said obstinately before heading back to the Petit Chalet.
“What are we going to do with her,” said Margia gazing after her. “I hope the others were more successful. I do quite like the kid.”
Evvy and Corney explained the problem to Maria and Lonny, “I hope you can think of something because we don’t want the little ninny to get into trouble over it all,” said Evvy.
“No,” said Maria slowly. “The only thing I can think of is to talk to Gisela about it. She may have an idea.”
“Oh Maria that’s a bully idea,” said Evvy relieved, “Gisela is sure to come up with something.” Gisela had been the school’s first Head Girl and beloved by all who were at the school with her.
“I thought we weren’t going to tell anyone about this. I know Miss Edwards and Mademoiselle knows, but I rather no one else did,” said Corney looking askance at the idea. Maria shook her head.
“She won’t tell,” said Evvy positively, while Maria murmured, “She will keep it quiet if we ask her to.”
“Any luck?” asked Corney hopefully as Margia and Elsie joined them. Margia shook her head. “No,” she said. “I haven’t meant someone so obstinate before in my life. What about you lot?”
“Maria suggested we talk to Gisela about it,” said Evvy. “She won’t say anything,” added Maria “if we ask her not to.”
“That’s not a bad idea,” said Margia considering. “We can talk to her this weekend when we go up to Die Rosen. I’m sure Madame won’t mind if we visit Gisela.”
The six girls and Biddy were going to Die Rosen to visit Madame. It was planned for Biddy to stay with Madame over the summer holidays and Madame had wanted to meet her before then. Mademoiselle had suggested that the six girls should be the ones to accompany her as they had had the most to do with Biddy.

The girls were highly excited, about all them being allowed to go to the Sonnalpe together and somewhat proud. It had been an unusual week for them and it had all started with Miss Edwards a few days earlier. Miss Edwards with her conversation in mind from the previous night with Mademoiselle LePattre and Miss Wilson headed out to meet Biddy at the gate. Ilonka and Evvy had already met Biddy and were sitting under a shady tree.
“How was school today Biddy? Did those boys leave you alone?” asked Ilonka.
Biddy nodded. “Thim boys will niver be mean to me agin, she proclaimed. “All the girls wanted to know who me friends were. The boys have been mean to them too.”
“Well, You tell us if they start up again, okay Biddy,” said Evvy.
“How is your schoolwork,” asked Ilonka practically and the girls started on Biddy’s work.
Miss Edwards had smothered a grin at the discussion of the bullies. She could well imagine Evvy and Corney could seem terrifying, when they got going. She walked closer to them,
“Hello girls,” she said pleasantly.
“Miss Edwards,” said Ilonka and Evvy hurriedly standing up.
“Biddy, I know Karen is waiting for you with your Kaffee und Kuchen. Why don’t you go on ahead?”
“Yes Miss Edwards,” she said with a backwards glance at Evvy and Ilonka. Evvy and Ilonka stood looking at their feet. They didn’t think they were in treble as they couldn’t think of any rules broken but grownups were too hard to know on that.
“Girls,” said Miss Edwards pleasantly, “I’ve noticed in the past few days you have been helping Biddy with her schoolwork and with settling into the school.”
“Who told you,” blurted out Evvy stunned by her comments, while Ilonka stood with her mouth opened wide. “Did Biddy,” she asked.
Miss Edwards laughed, “Do close your mouth Ilonka, you look like a stranded codfish,” at which Ilonka snapped her mouth shut.
“And no Biddy didn’t tell me,” Miss Edwards continued, “I saw it myself the first day you started. Biddy seemed to be late home and I was worried so came to meet her and saw you all talking with her. Ilonka and Evadne, it’s very generous and kind what you have done for her,” Miss Edwards said gently, “And I hope you will continue. That’s all I wanted to say and,” as though in afterthought, “if you would prefer to have a little privacy, there is a small room you may use at the Petit Chalet. Please let the others know and I will let Biddy know.”
“Thank you Miss Edwards,” said Ilonka seeing Evvy was too stunned to speak.
“Crumbs,” said Evvy after Miss Edwards moved off, “she knows. I never knew what a sport Miss Edwards was.”
“Neither did I,” said Ilonka staring after her.
“Oh well, I didn’t think it would remain a secret for very long,” said Margia philosophically when she heard, “At least Teddy’s a sport over it all. Thank goodness none of the other mistresses have found out.”
“I know,” said Corney devoutly, “Bill and Charlie would have been worse and I can’t imagine what Mademoiselle would say over it all.”

Corney and Maria were in for the biggest shock for two days later Mademoiselle LePattre herself walked in when they were tutoring Biddy.
“Now Biddy,” said Corney, “You need to multiply not divide there. See where you went wrong.”
Corney, truth be told was starting to get more than a little bored with all this tutoring. She genuinely like Biddy, but as Miss Wilson shrewdly surmised, Corney didn’t have a lot of staying power. Elsie was starting to discover she loved teaching, while Maria, and Lonny were a lot more academically inclined. Even Margia and Evvy did better at school that she did. It was at this point that Mademoiselle walked in.
“Mademoiselle,” said Maria standing slowly. Corney and Biddy hurriedly followed suit.
“Please sit down girls,” said Mademoiselle LePattre kindly, “I only wanted to see how you were settling in Biddy and Miss Edwards has informed me she has given you leave to work in this room. How is it going ma petite.”
“Good thank you Mademoiselle,” stammered Biddy at this unexpected attention, “Corney and Maria and everyone have been helping me.”
“Good,” said Mademoiselle heartily. “I am glad to hear that. It is good for our older girls to help our younger ones. Have you finished for the day,” she inquired.
“Oi just have meself one more sum to do,” explained Biddy.
“Then finish up and run and play. Cornelia and Maria,” said The Head after Biddy left. “I would like to see you both and Margia, Elsie, Evadne and Ilonka in my study after Kaffee und Kuchen please. Would you please let everyone know?”
The two girls assented, looking stunned.
“Then I will see then.”
Maria and Corney looked at each other after Mademoiselle left the room.
“What ever next,” said Corney as they both stared at each other wide eyed

All the girls tidied themselves after Kaffee und Kuchen and went to the study. Margia knocked.
“Come in girls,” said a quiet voice. “Please sit down,” said Mademoiselle LePattre when the girls entered. “Miss Edwards has told me of your kindness towards Biddy and I wanted to say how proud and glad I was to hear about it. She said you have all helped Biddy settle down in our school and I wanted to let you know it is largely thanks to you six girls. It has been very kind of you to sacrifice your free time to help her.”
All of the girls looked embarrassed but pleased.
“That’s okay Mademoiselle,” said Margia at last. “We don’t mind”
“It’s helped me realize that I think I would like to be a teacher,” said Elsie, “I find it rather fun, teaching”
The others murmured their assent.
“I am glad to hear that,” said Mademoiselle. “Sometime when we help others, we often help ourselves in other ways. I am glad; this has helped you find your life’s work, Elsie. Now, Madame has wanted to meet Biddy. It has been decided that she will spend her holidays at Die Rosen and as she feels the most comfortable with you girls, we have decided you should be the ones to accompany her.”
The girls looked at each other in their delight.
“Thank you,” Mademoiselle they chorused together.
“Hard work and merit deserves some reward,” said their Head with a smile. “Now you may go. Cornelia, if you stay for a moment.”
Cornelia stayed greatly wondering why she had been singled out. In the excitement of the coming weekend no one but Evvy had noticed that Corney had been asked to stay behind.
“Cornelia,” said her Head kindly. “I wanted to thank you especially. I know you aren’t as interested in your studies as perhaps some of the others are and that can mean it’s harder to stay interested in tutoring Biddy.”
Corney gave a gulp.
“Thank you Mademoiselle,” she stammered, she felt unexpectedly close to tears. No one had ever encouraged her or shown this kind of interest in her before.
“You may go,” said Mademoiselle, “Remember, I am proud of you.” Corney left, vowing she would do whatever Mademoiselle wanted, after her saying that.
“Everything alright, old thing,” asked Evvy when Corney got back to the Common Room.
Corney nodded feeling inexplicably happy. “Can you believe, we get to spend the weekend at the Sonnalpe?” was all she said.

“I don’t know why Mademoiselle didn’t ask us to take Biddy to see my sister grumbled Joey to Frieda, “I mean we were the ones who organized the school to adopt her. It was your idea that made it possible.”
“But, they did find her and were the first to help her,” pointed out Frieda.
“My sister must be mad having all of them on her own,” said Joey, not consoled by this.
“Juliet and Grizel are there too,” reminded Frieda, “I doubt they will get into too much mischief.”
“True,” sighed Joey, “but I would like to see Madge and the Robin.” Perhaps you should be grateful we don’t have to worry about the quintet and Maria this weekend said Frieda with a smile. "It should certainly be a peaceful weekend without them.”
Joey gave it up as a bad job and allowed Frieda to pull her off to join the others, but she was still feeling very disgruntled over the whole thing.

Juliet and Grizel were both staying at Die Rosen, when the six arrived.
“Hello you people said Juliet. Madame will be down shortly, Stacie was feeling all done in so she’s having her meal in bed, though she is longing to see you all.”
“Is she alright,” asked Evvy, concerned.
“She’ll be fine. She’s just knocked out by this heat,” explained Juliet. “Now what have you done with Biddy,” she asked.
Elsie gently pulled Biddy out from behind Margia and Evvy. She had been feeling extremely shy.
“This is Biddy,” she said. “Biddy this is Juliet. She used to go to our school.”
“How do ye do miss,” said Biddy giving a little curtsey.
“And I’m Grizel,” said Grizel introducing herself, “and it sounds like Madame’s coming now,” at the sound of light footsteps.
“Hello Biddy,” said Madge coming into the room, “Welcome to Die Rosen. I hope you will feel at home here soon. We’re glad to have you here.” Madge wisely turned to the other girls seeing Biddy was overcome with shyness.
“Hello everyone. I’m glad to have you all here. Dinner won’t be long so why don’t you sit and relax. Margia, How’s the music going?”
“Good,” said Margia eagerly. “Herr Anersel thinks I’m steaming along.”
“I’m glad dear,” said Madge warmly. “Elsie, I know Lilias is longing to see you. I told her you would be up here this weekend. She seems to be doing splendidly.”
“Oh, did Dr Jem say she’s doing better,” asked Elsie eagerly. Madge shook her head, “He hasn’t to me, but I saw your Mother two days ago and she told me how well Lilias was doing? Maria, Gisela has invited you to her house for lunch tomorrow. I know she’s longing to show off Natalie. You’ll see a huge difference in her.”
“She's a pet,” said Juliet with a smile. “She looks like Gisela’s miniature.”
“She does,” agreed Grizel. “How’s Guides, going?” She asked, “Are you feeling ready for the camp?”
“I think so,” said Ilonka, “The Saints are disappointed they are not able to come with us, but I think it will be nice to have just ourselves”
“I think so too,” smiled Juliet.
“How’s the rowing going, Evvy? Are you people ready for the Saints?” asked Grizel interestedly.
“Good I think,” considered Evvy. “I think we’ll beat the Saints but it will be a close thing.”
The boat race was the first of its kind between the two schools and was to take place the following weekend. Biddy had been sitting there quietly listening. Robin was also sitting there not saying anything. Both were smiling shyly at each other. Robin soon overcame her shyness and started talking to Biddy. It didn’t take long for Biddy to be her usual friendly self.
“Robin, why don’t you take Biddy up to wash before dinner and show her where she will be sleeping,” said Madge.
“All right, Tante Guito. Come on Biddy.” And the two ran off. Dinner was soon ready and the girls discussed all the news of the school avidly. Madge watch Biddy quietly and liked what she saw. She seems a dear little thing she thought. Robin seemed to take her under her wing and the two little girls chattered away though the two seemed so completely different. Biddy was a friendly, warm-hearted mischievous girl, while Robin was a quiet, and gentle, sweet natured girl.
‘It will be interesting to see how these two get on,’ thought Madge.

Evvy popped in to see Stacie on her way to breakfast and was relieved to see her looking well.
“Hi Stacie, do mind if I come in?” she asked.
“Evvy,” welcomed Stacie with a smile. “I’ve been longing to see you all. What have you been up to?”
“Oh this and that,” answered Evvy vaguely. She was feeling a little nervous. She wanted to talk to Stacie about Corney but didn’t quite know how to broach the topic.
“Evvy what’s wrong?” asked Stacie. She as she watched Evvy wander around the room aimlessly picking up things and putting them down.
“What do you mean?” asked Evvy quickly.
“You just seem like there’s something on your mind,” said Stacie softly and she added with a twinkle in her eye,
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you voluntarily get up this early.” Evvy went red, she was a notoriously difficult person to get out of bed in the morning.
“Stacie,” she said at last, “Can I talk to you about something personal? I need advice and you’d probably be the best person to ask. Would you mind?”
Stacie was stunned, No one had ever asked for her advice before. Usually most people went to Joey or Madame.
“If you want,” she said shakily, thinking what if I say the wrong thing, help, “I can’t say if I’ll be any help though.”
“That’s okay, it’s just that it’s about Corney so I kind of want to keep it private.”
“Okay,” said Stacie, “I won’t say anything.” She was touched that Evvy wanted to talk to her.
“Its about Corney,” said Evvy at last, “Lonny, Maria, Corney and I came across Biddy crying and she was upset cos her Momma has just died and so did her step father and she was missing them and feeling lonely. Well we kind of started helping her and Corney said things.”
Evvy stopped red faced she felt mean talking about this behind Corney’s back.
“Corney talked about not having a Momma and how she felt about it. And how the school has been like her home. I’ve never heard Corney talk like that before and I don’t know what to say to her about it or if I should,” finished Evvy.
“And you thought I would understand because my parents have died and the school was my first home,” said Stacie softly. "Evvy, you were one of the kindest people to me during my first term," she said going red. "Most people didn’t really understand what I was going through. I don’t think you did either,” she said quickly as Evvy opened her mouth to say she hadn’t either,
“But, despite that,” continued Stacie, “you were really kind and that meant a lot to me. It helped. It showed me I had a friend even if I didn’t always show you that. Maybe you don’t even have to say anything to Corney, but I know you can show her that her friendship means something to you. She’s probably feeling a bit embarrassed about it too, if I know Corney.”
They were interrupted by a knock at the door, “Stacie,” called Juliet, “I have your breakfast for you.”
“Come in,” said Stacie with a quick glance at Evvy.

“Madame sent me with your breakfast tray, Stacie,” said Juliet cheerfully, “Here, let me help you sit up.”
She soon had Stacie sitting up comfortably.
“I better go,” said Evvy reluctantly, “I’m sure Madame is wondering where I am.”
“No need,” said Juliet, “she saw you come in so there’s enough for you as well. She thought you might like to have breakfast with Stacie.”
Evvy relaxed, “That’s bully of Madame,” she said.
“What were you two talking about so seriously,” asked Juliet curiously, “Is everything all right?”
Evvy and Stacie glanced at each other. “Oh we were just talking about friendships and how they change,” explained Stacie quickly.
“That, they do,” responded Juliet lightly, “Grizel’s and my friendship certainly have. We used to get up to all sorts when we first met but the older we got the closer we’ve become, and being apart for most of the last two years hasn’t really made a difference.”
“Did you think it would?” asked Evvy interested.
“I wasn’t sure,” admitted Juliet. “Grizel was probably my first friend at the school and sometimes when you‘re apart for such a long time, you both can change in completely different ways and the friendship isn’t as close. I think it helped that we both grew in the same direction.”
“How d’ye mean?” asked Evvy puzzled,
“Well I grew up a little quicker than Grizel in some ways, said Juliet, Madame had a huge influence on me and my parents died at the end of my first term at the school and that affected me a lot. It made me see things more deeply. I was also a year older too and became a prefect earlier. Grizel’s outlook in some ways was a lot more carefree, she played more jokes and things,” Juliet said trying to be tactful. “For example, if she hadn’t grown more responsible and I had, or more thoughtful or just acknowledge the more serious things and not just the fun stuff then maybe our friendship wouldn’t have grown as deep,” said Juliet trying into words what she was feeling.
“I can see how if she only saw the surface things and you saw that and the deep things it would be harder to be close friends,” said Stacie thoughtfully, “Your friendship would never change or grow but always stay what it was when you were both 14 or 15.”
“Exactly,” nodded Juliet, “Do you understand Evvy?”
“I think so,” said Evvy slowly, “but how do make sure you both grow in the same direction or at the same time?”
“You can’t,” said Juliet with a sigh. “Not everyone grows up or at the same time. All you can do is make sure, you try and understand people and let them grow at their own pace. Does that help.”
“I think so,” said Evvy. “Good,” smiled Juliet, “cos I better head down for my own breakfast. I’ll see you later.”

By the time Juliet got back to the breakfast table, Grizel, Elsie, Margia and Corney were having an animated conversation about Cricket.
“I wish I could have a game,” said Grizel longingly. “It’s been so long.”
“Well why don’t we,” suggested Elsie. Of all the people present she was the next most keen on sports after Grizel and it had become her ambition to be a Games Mistress.
“There’s no cricket pitch to play though,” exclaimed Grizel. "So how can we?"
“It doesn’t have to be a proper game. We could just have a hit out the front,” pointed out Elsie.
“That’s a jolly idea said Grizel. Who’s interested?” she asked. Margia, Corney, Lonny and Maria all assented.
“Juliet? Madame?” asked Grizel eagerly. “Do say you will join us.”
“I will,” said Juliet while Madge shook her head laughingly, “but what about the babies.”
“Well Robin and Biddy could play,” said Grizel. “Have you ever played before Biddy,” asked Grizel.
Biddy shook her head. ‘No,” she said.
“It’s a ripping game. Come on we’ll teach you.”
“Me too,” said Rix looking angelic,
“And me,” said Peggy.
“I think you’re too young,” said Madge gently.
“Oh do let them,” said Elsie eagerly. “We’d help them.”
“What about Davie?” asked Madge, with a smile.
“I’m sure Stacie will look after him,” suggested Lonny. “She’ll want to watch at least.”
“All right,” said Madge laughing. “It’s been awhile since I’ve played cricket.”
The girls soon got ready and Stacie parked her chair under a shady tree. Davie played on a rug at her feet with Peggy, who wasn’t really interested in cricket, but didn’t want to miss any of the fun.
“Elsie you go behind and be wicket keeper and Biddy, you can go first okay,” said Grizel. “This is how you hold the bat and I’ll bowl the ball and you hit it okay.”
Biddy nodded and she soon learnt how to hit the ball. Her first few attempts were wild to the extreme, but with all the enthusiastic ‘coaches’ she soon got the hang of the game. All of them had a turn. Robin proved to be a steady player, and although some of Biddy’s shots went all over the place she seem to have talent.
“You could be jolly good, with coaching Biddy,” said Grizel generously.
“Can I have a go please Auntie Grizel,” asked Rix.
Madge started to look worried, “I think you’re a little young,” she started to say.
“Hold your hands here and here Rix. It’s alright Madame. I’ll make sure he’s okay.” said Grizel and she put her own hands over Rix’s. The bat looked enormous in his hands and Rix looked extremely proud that he was playing cricket with the big girls.
“Okay, keep your eye on the ball and when it’s close enough we’ll hit it.” They missed the first couple.
“Okay let’s try again.”
Juliet bowled and Grizel manage to tap the ball.
“See that Auntie Madge, I hit the ball,” call Rix excitedly.
“I saw,” said Madge with a warm smile.
“Do it again please," pleaded Rix, "that was fun.”
“Okay, here goes,” said Juliet, and bowled again.
Rix managed to hit another ball.
“See that Auntie Madge,” he called out excitedly, “I hit the ball again.”
“I saw,” said Madge. And she said changing the subject “I think it’s time we went inside. I’m starting to feel boiled and I’m sure everyone else is. And Maria I’m sure it’s nearly time for you to go to Gisela’s.”
“Can we all walk over with them,” asked Evvy, “I’m longing to see Gisela again.”
Madge nodded, but the babies need to stay behind as Rix opened his mouth to ask if he could go with the big girls.
“And don’t forget your hats. I don’t want any of you catching sunstroke.”

Margia, Ilonka, Elsie, Evvy, Corney and Maria soon headed off wearing their shady hats.
"I’m longing to see Gisela and baby Natalie," bubbled Maria. Normally a quiet girl she had come out of her shell a lot that term.
“You’ll love Gisela, Corney,” prophesied Evvy. “She was the best Head Girl we’ve ever had. The others aren’t so bad but Gisela is something else.
The others laughed.
“Even if she did try to teach you how to sew,” teased Margia.
“You pig Margia,” exclaimed Evvy, “How could you remind me of that. Except for that Corney.”
They soon arrived.
“Come in,” welcomed Gisela smiling. “Would you like to stay for coffee,” she invited.
“I don’t think Madame would mind,” said Evvy, “and she knows where we are.”
The others agreed. Maria made the introductions, for neither Elsie nor Ilonka had met Gisela and Corney only briefly. All the girls looked at Maria, ‘You ask’ their looks plainly said.
“Gisela, may we ask your advice about something,” asked Maria.
Gisela paused as she about to get the Coffee.
“Certainly,” she said concerned. “You aren’t in trouble again,” she asked her flying back to the events in Oberammergau.
“Oh no,” Maria hastened to reassure her sister, “This is something completely different.”
Gisela vanished and soon returned with the Coffee and some cake. She sat down once she had served everyone.
“Now what is it that you want advice for?”
“All of us found a little girl upset because her parents had died and she was to go to the orphanage,” began Maria.
“She didn’t want to continued Margia.
“So we kind of adopted her,” contributed Evvy.
“And the school found out,” added Corney, “so they adopted her and she lives at the Chalet School.”
“I know that much,” nodded Gisela, “Madame told me. But, what is the problem.”
“She goes to the village school and was upset that she couldn’t understand German,” explained Ilonka in her soft voice.
“And so we started helping her,” supplied Elsie, “but now she insists on doing things for us, like our mending and we don’t want any trouble over it.”
“I can’t imagine you feel bad about that Evvy,” said Gisela with a smile. She well remembered the battles she, Bernhilda, and Wanda had in teaching Evvy to sew.
"Does Mademoiselle know?” she queried, while Evvy muttered, “I wouldn’t be such a pig as to let some kid do my mending.” Corney gave her a gentle kick to silence her and she subsided.
“Oh, she knows,” reassured Margia, with a look at Evvy and Corney, that plainly said ‘stop scrapping you two,’ “and so does Miss Edwards, but Biddy is feeling bad about accepting our help and wants to do something in return and Maria suggested talking to you about it. She said you’d be able to help. You will won’t you?” asked Margia uncertainly.
Gisela was looking flabbergasted at what they had said.
“Oh yes,” reassured Gisela, “I am stunned, literally stunned,” she murmured in her own language.
“I am so sorry,” apologized Gisela catching sight of the others faces, “that was rude of me, speaking German”.
“That’s okay,” said Corney. She had liked what she had seen of Gisela and suddenly realized why Evvy and Margia thought so highly of her.
“I need to think about it,” said Gisela firmly. “I promise I will help you as much as I can and I will not discuss this with anyone, without your permission, though I would like to talk it over with Gottfried if I may?”
“Oh yes, you may tell Gottfried,” reassured Maria. “He won’t tell anyone?” she asked anxiously.
“No,” said Gisela confidently. “This will just be between the two of us.” She gave an inward sigh. She did not know how to help them at all, but her sister had asked and Gisela tried to help Maria wherever possible.
“I do want to say this, however, I am very proud of you and happy that you are helping Biddy. It is very kind of you all.”
All the girls went red at this praise.
“It’s nothing,” said the others gruffly, while Maria beamed. Praise from Gisela meant a lot to her, especially after what happened at Oberammergau. Gisela had been extremely angry and disappointed with her.

Muchly enjoying this, Fiona. I've always been fascinated by Biddy, and the details of her early life at the school are very vague. I always feel there should be more of a relationship between her abd Nell Wilson than ever appears.
Thank you.

It was Corney who realized first on their way home.
“How is Gisela going to let us know what she thinks?” she asked. “I doubt we’ll get the chance to see her again.”
“Crumbs,” ejaculated Evvy, “I never thought of that.”
“Gisela will find a way,” said Margia confidently.
Gisela certainly did.
“Gisela has an idea or two,” said Maria bursting into the room when she came home. The girls were all changing for dinner.
“Well, what is it?” asked Margia impatiently.
“She has two ideas,” said Maria calming down a little, “and one of them we’ll need Stacie’s help. Has she met her?” she asked.
Evvy nodded. “She seems a little overawed by her,” she said.
“I wonder if the idea will work then,” said Maria reflectively.
“I’ll shake you Maria if you don’t tell us soon,” commanded Corney. Maria laughed.
“I wouldn’t want that to happen,” she said demurely. “Gisela thought that perhaps we could ask Biddy to keep Stacie company over the summer. Gisela know Stacie does get lonely and bored even though there is a lot going on in the house. She thought having Biddy keep her company especially if she is aware how hard Stacie finds it at times being stuck in a wheelchair or bed and it helps her out having company. We could ask her not to tell Stacie that she is doing it to help us out but because she wants to. She said we should emphasize that Stacie is a very good friend of ours. Or we could let Stacie know we’ve asked her to and why.”
“Evvy better suggest that,” Elsie said with decision.
Evvy flushed but knew out of the group she was the closest to Stacie.
“But do we tell Stacie?” she asked.
“I think so,” said Margia. “I think she would be glad to be included with this.”
“What is the other idea?” asked Ilonka.
“It is Gisela’s birthday coming up,” said Maria looking up at the ceiling seeming to change the subject. She was enjoying dragging this out and tantalising the girls.
“That does it Maria,” said Corney, “I’m going to shake you.”
Maria started laughing. “Gisela suggests that I ask Biddy to help her with Natalie for a few hours over the summer as my birthday present to her. Gisela wouldn’t get her to do anything too heavy, just play with Natalie and help with bathing and things. I think Gisela has something else in mind,” she added reflectively, “but she’s not saying too much at the moment.”
“Oh well,” said Margia shelving that comment for the moment, we’ve certainly got a few things we can work with.
Evvy nodded. “I’ll talk with Stacie after the kids go to bed,” she said.

Biddy was enjoying her weekend. She was starting to fall in love with Madge Russell. There was something so motherly about her and she liked the Robin. It had been a long time since she had played with dollies and puzzles. She had been too busy with school and trying to help out in an effort to repay the school for all their help. The other little girls at the village school were all from poor families and all were just as busy helping their own families, that none of them had much time to play until the summer. Biddy gave a little sigh of contentment
“Why do you call Tante Guito Madame?" asked the Robin when they were getting ready for bed.
"Because that’s her name," said Biddy surprised. "You should call her Tante Guito too if your going to live here suggested the Robin. That’s what I call her and your one of the family now."
Poor Biddy started crying. She couldn’t help it. The easy ‘Your one of the family now’ touched her and reminded her of how much she had lost.
"Don’t cry Biddy," said Robin running over and putting her arm around Biddy. "My Mama died too and Tante Guito takes care of me and your Mama died and now she taking care of you too."
It only seemed to make Biddy cry harder. When Madge came to say good night to the girls she found Biddy crying, with Robin’s arm around her.
"What’s wrong?" she asked gently, picking Biddy up and nursing her, with an arm around Robin.
"I miss Mam," sniffed Biddy, "and Robin said this was my home now and ..and I just started crying." She gave a great gulp. "That’s all right sweetheart you’ll always miss your Mother," crooned Madge. "She’ll always have that special place in your heart and you’ll always remember her."
"I know," nodded Biddy sniffing, "that’s what Corney said; she also said sometimes you could find someone who becomes like a Mother to you." Madge’s eyes nearly fell out of her head at that. 'Corney!' She thought.
"She’s right, sometime you do," was all she said gently.
"Robin said I could call you Tante Guito," said Biddy shyly, "and I know Tante means Auntie." Madge smiled. "It does," she said warmly, "and I would be very happy if you want to call me that."
"Thank you," said Biddy softly.
Madge put them both to bed with a hug and a kiss.
"Night Tante Guito," said both girls sleepily, when Madge turned out the light and left the room

Meanwhile, the rest of the girls were downstairs talking. Grizel and Juliet were having dinner with Gisela and Gottfried.
"Stacie," said Evvy hesitantly, "We have a favour to ask of you.
Stacie stared at Evvy, "what is it?" she managed, wondering why everyone was looking at her.
"You know how the school has adopted Biddy, well some of us came across her upset about losing her Momma-Stacie gave Evvy a keen look at this- and not being able to understand her school work and we decided to help her."
"That’s really nice of you," said Stacie eyeing them keenly,
"The problem is," said Ilonka taking up the tale, "she is now doing all our mending for us as a way to say thank you, but we don’t want her or us to get into trouble for it."
"Oh," said Stacie, "but how can I help you with that."
"We thought perhaps we could ask her to keep you company over the summer," said Elsie eagerly. "Say you’re a friend of ours and how lonely you are and how much it’ll help us out, by doing this."
Stacie was nearly convulsed at this. She struggled not to laugh.
"Certainly," she said managing to keep a straight face, "I’ll try to look really pitiful to so she really feels sorry for me."
"Stacie," wailed Evvy, "that’s not what we meant."
"I know but your faces," she choked.
"What’s the joke?" asked Juliet smiling as she and Grizel returned.
"Ask Stacie, she’s the one laughing like a hyena," said Evvy turning in disgust.
"Evvy," said Stacie warmly, "I’ll do it. It just sounded funny. I either develop a sense of humour about being stuck in this chair or go mad."
"Do what?" asked Grizel, "Will someone explain or we’ll go mad."

I really liked this last bit. Being in a wheelchair 95% of the time myself (I do walk a tiny bit) I totally understand the laughing or go mad idea. And the bit where Evvy didn't understand the joke - been there, done that. I have had people on the street tell me off for joking about being disabled. Because wheelchairs aren't funny to most people!

The seven girls looked at each other. It was never their intention to tell any one. Juliet caught the look.
"If it’s private, then leave it," she said kindly.
"No," said Margia slowly, "but promise you won’t tell anyone?" she asked.
"Guides honour," chorused both girls.
"We’ve been tutoring Biddy," explained Margia. "Evvy, Corney, Lonny and Maria found her upset one day about not being able to understand German and she was missing her mother, so we said we’d help," said Margia flushing a little, afraid of what Grizel might say.
"Anyway," she resumed, "Biddy has started doing our mending for us."
"Your not getting her to do that?" asked Juliet quickly.
"What do you take us for," said Evvy hotly. "We wouldn’t be so mean."
"I know," responded Juliet, "that could get you all into trouble."
"We know," said Elsie quietly, "except Biddy insists on doing something as repayment."
"And I thought Gisela could help us out," supplemented Maria, "And she suggested that perhaps we could ask her to keep Stacie company over the summer, and to help Gisela with Natalie."
"And all Stacie did was laugh like a hyena when we suggested it to her," said Evvy injured.
Juliet looked thoughtful at this explanation.
"Well I think it’s jolly sporting of you all to do this," cried Grizel generously.
The girls flushed at this unexpected compliment from Grizel.
"I think it’s not a bad idea," Grizel said slowly, "and I certainly understand why she suggested it. Oh no not out of pity for you, but there isn’t a lot she can do for the others and it’s not too taxing."
Stacie flushed, "Oh I realize that," she said, "it just quirked my sense of humour, and she added frankly, if I don't joke about it, it ends up getting me down."
Evvy slipped an arm through Stacie,s and gave a sympathetic smile.
"Perhaps though it taken one step further," continued Juliet. "What do you think about tutoring Biddy over the summer. You could certainly do that by telling her stories about History and the Classics. I’d be happy to help her with Maths and Science."
"What are you thinking Juliet?" asked Margia.
"I’m remembering about me before my parents died," explained Juliet slowly, "I know this won’t go any further-all the girls assented-but my parents dumped me onto Madame. She initially thought about training me as a student teacher, before my parents died and left enough money to pay for my schooling. It must be so much harder it must be for Biddy being so much younger. If Biddy did really well in school, then perhaps she could get a scholarship somewhere, even if the Chalet School doesn’t offer her one."
The girls all looked at each other. The idea hadn’t occurred to them. Juliet was looking a little uncomfortable about revealing something so personal. Grizel slipped a comforting arm through Juliet’s.
"I think that’s a bully idea," said Evvy characteristically the first to speak,
"What do you think Stacie?"
"I’d love to do it," said Stacie thoughtfully, "And it would be my way of thanking Madame, for all her kindness to me if I helped someone else," she said flushing, "She’d like that."
"And Gisela could only speak German to her when Biddy helps with Natalie," said Maria joyfully. "So it’s agreed then."
The girls all assented.
"I wish I could do something," said Grizel a little disconsolently when she and Juliet were alone later. "Madame has done so much for me, but I don’t think playing the piano or games would really help a lot."
"Maybe not," said Juliet, "but I’m sure you’ll be able to help in something. I just hope Biddy doesn’t mind all the plans we’re making for her life."

The next day the girls put their suggestions to Biddy.
"If you really want to do something for us this would help out a lot. Stacie does find it lonely at times and we’re not around as much over the summer," said Evvy persuasively,
"And," added Maria, "it would be the best birthday present for Gisela. I know she has been very tired since Natalie was born."
Biddy agreed happily to the suggestion.
"I just don’t like taking charity," she said sticking her jaw out.
"Oh we realize that," said Evvy hurriedly, not wanting to get into another argument.
And so the first day of the school holidays saw Biddy knocking on Stacie’s door.

“Hello Biddy,” said Stacie with a smile, when Biddy entered, “Coming to keep me company, Biddy. Thanks,” she said when Biddy nodded, “It’s a little boring being on my own,” continued Stacie, ‘thinking how do I start this,’ while Biddy was thinking ‘how do I talk to this girl.’
Biddy sat there staring around the room desperately trying to think of something to say.
“What were you reading?” asked Biddy when the silence was starting to become oppressive.
“I was reading some Greek legends,” said Stacie glad Biddy had spoken. “Have you heard any?” She queried.
Biddy shook her head.
“Would you like to,” she asked.
Biddy nodded, if only because it seemed to be an easy way to spend time with Stacie. She soon found herself enthralled by the tales and asked a lot of questions about the stories. Stacie wasn’t a natural storyteller, but was keenly interested in the topic and soon passed on some of her love of History and the Classics onto Biddy. Stacie told a lot of stories found in History and the Classic that summer, initially to an audience of one and then later to Robin when she started joining them. Joey sometimes joined them and Stacie and Joey got carried away arguing about some of their favourites topic in History. Biddy and Robin listened wide-eyed, but Biddy learned how to argue her point and Stacie on her part soon came up against Biddy’s obstinacy.
“You certainly know how to argue your point,” said Stacie laughingly, “but,” she added seriously, “sometime, your not always right, Oh I don’t mean you personally,” she added hastily at the look on Biddy’s face, “but more we both can be wrong and there could be a third idea and if you hold onto your point of view too tenaciously then you can miss that.”
Biddy nodded a little unwillingly at Stacie’s logic.
“Have you thought about what you’d like to do when your grown up?” asked Stacie.
Biddy shook her head, “I’ll probably be a maid like Mama,” was all she said, “All the girls at school said they usually work as maids in the hotels around the lake or for a family.”
Stacie felt a little sad. “What about teaching?” she suggested, “that’s what I would like to do; teach at a University and write about history.”
“But you go to school,” said Biddy, “my school doesn’t teach all of this.”
“You could get a scholarship,” said Stacie eyeing Biddy closely, “I know a lot of boarding schools offer them to people who are bright.”
“What do you mean?” asked Biddy surprised.
“In England a school will sometimes take a pupil who can’t afford the fees but who does well in school. It makes the school look good. They usually only offer them to people who are clever or show an aptitude to being smart,” explained Stacie, “so if you did well in the local school, you then sit an exam I think and then the person who does the best gets accepted by the school.”
Biddy looked thoughtful, “But isn’t that charity?” she asked quietly.
“Yes and no,” said Stacie surprisingly. “Yes the school pays for your fees, but people then look at the school and thinks all the pupils are smart. It makes the school look good, and, so it isn’t.”
“I wish I could get one to the Chalet School,” said Biddy wistfully. “I would like to go to the same school as everyone else, but I’m not very good at all the subjects.”
“You’re not too bad at History and English,” said Stacie surprisingly.
“But what about Maths,” said Biddy a little sadly.
Stacie hid a grin. “Juliet is a Maths teacher, you could ask her for help. You could offer to help set up the Annexe school, in exchange for her help with your maths.”
Biddy looked thoughtful. “Then do you think I’ll get a scholarship?” she asked hopefully.
“You could,” said Stacie thoughtfully, “but it may not be at the Chalet School.”
“I could try anyway,” said Biddy, “Thanks Stacie.”

Fascinating, and a lovely way for Biddy's interest in History to be stimulated.

In fairness to the school, they did seem happy to fund her when they realised she was bright and that the village school wasn't going to be enough for her (pity help the bright village kids, of course, but nonetheless ...).

Juliet was a little stunned by Biddy’s request.
"I’ll try to help you Biddy," she said kindly. "I know Madame helped me when I needed it."
So, Juliet did her part and in return for helping her set up the Annexe, helped Biddy with her Maths and a little Science. Biddy loved learning and soaked the teaching like a sponge. Juliet also talked with her about getting a scholarship.
"What do you think Biddy?” she asked.
"I would like to said Biddy shyly, but I would like to go to the Chalet School with all of the others."
"Hmm," said Juliet thoughtfully, "I know they don’t offer a scholarship at the moment, but they might at a later date. Anyway Grizel, Joey and I are off to our Guides Camp next week so you should take a break." Biddy nodded, she had heard all about the Guides camp from Robin who was disappointed about not being allowed to go.
“I’ve been a Brownie for ever so long she said I could camp."
Biddy looked at her wide eyed, she had never been a Guide or known anyone who had,
"Why don’t we see if we can camp here?" she asked. "I know it’s not the same thing, but it could be fun."
Robin was charmed with the idea.
"I wonder if Tante Guito will agree," she said hopefully, "I do hope she doesn’t say I’ll get too tired."
Madge agreed when the idea was put to her.
"The only problem is," she said, "we don’t have tents, so I don’t know that’ll you be able to camp as such but you can sleep in the hammocks outside and have picnics outside if you like."
"Me too?" asked Rix who happened to present.
“And me,” pleaded Peggy, not wanting to miss out.
Madge agreed saying laughingly, "well if you get too tired, you’ll be sleeping inside the next night, but you certainly can try one night."
The four were excited by the prospect of their own mini-camp.
"Let’s tell Stacie," said Biddy and the two girls ran to her room.
Stacie looked a little wistful at their chatter, but knew it would be long time before she would ever be able to do something like this.
"Why don’t you be our visitor?" suggested Biddy seeing the look on Stacie’s face. She had become very fond of Stacie over the past few weeks.
"Oh and Tante Guito and Davie too," cried the Robin clapping her hands "and perhaps we can have a Camp Fire with you."
Stacie’s face brightened at the two little girl’s obvious attempt to cheer her up.
"That would be fun," she said warmly.
"I’ll go ask Tante Guito," said Robin running off, she soon came back with her.
“What do you think Stacie, shall we?” asked Madge. She was aware how hard Stacie found it not being able to go to Camp with the other girls. Stacie smiled, "Why not?"
"Then you girls need to start getting ready," said Madge.
So the two girls ran off and started planning.

Jem wasn’t too happy when he heard,
"But Robin needs her sleep," he said not looking happy.
"I know," said Madge, "but it is cooler outside and they’ve all promised to be good. Surely it can’t hurt for one night. Come on Jem, Robin is so good about everything, This will be good for her soul."
Jem reluctantly agreed.
"I’m in charge of the Camp," said Robin, "and Biddy is my deputy and Peggy and Rix are the campers."
Jem nearly started laughing at their seriousness.
"Do I get to visit as well?" he asked solemnly. "Of Course," said Biddy "but not until we’re ready."
Eigen, the boy of all work had good naturedly helped set up their hammocks, while the four campers ran around collecting sticks. Eigen added a few more when the children weren’t looking and went on his way.
"Well I think we’ve collected more than I thought," said Robin staring at the pile. "This is how we make a fire. Joey showed me."
Biddy was a willing learner. She was so excited as she had never done anything like this.
"We bought some sausages for tea and potatoes to cook in the fire," said Madge coming along with Jem, Stacie and David.
"We also have some bread and butter and a fruit drink. Where would you like them."
Robin showed her and she and Biddy busied themselves playing hostess.
"I need to inspect the Camp," said Jem solemnly, "Hmm," he said looking around it, "I think it’s a better one than Joey and the others have."
Robin beamed. The two girls had fun that evening. Jem exerted himself, telling stories of his own schooldays, while Stacie told stories of Greek myths and legends. Even Biddy told an old Irish legend involving banshees and the like.
"I don’t know how you’d be able to sleep out here after that," said Stacie with a shiver. "That was most uncanny."
"Anyway," said Madge changing the subject, "I think it’s time for bed." She helped them all into their hammocks and said, "if you have any problems let us know."
What she didn’t say was that she and Jem would be checking on them throughout the night and she didn’t notice the look on Rix’s face.

What is Rix plotting?

Rix was very quiet when the grown ups had left. His mind was turning over Biddy’s story and he wanted to scare the girls by pretending to be a banshee.
'Wouldn’t they scream,' he thought.
Biddy and Robin were talking quietly together thinking Peggy and Rix were asleep.
Biddy yawned, "I’m going to sleep now. G’night Robin," she said.
"Night," replied Robin sleepily.
Rix started wailing when he thought all the girls were asleep, which although a long time seemed to have passed it was actually only a few minutes after Biddy and Robing had stopped talking and both girls were still awake. Biddy looked up in surprise and saw Rix wailing. She soon realized he was trying to attempt to scare them and she struggled not to laugh. Biddy noticed Robin was awake and the two girls communicated with sign language and both noiselessly slipped out of the hammocks and crept over to Rix. Biddy signed to tip the hammock but Robin shook her head and in a wonderful imitation of Joey put her hands on her hips and said
"Call that a banshee I could make a better noise than that."
Rix was so startled he moved and the hammock tipped over and he fell out of it. Both Biddy and Robin started laughing as Rix started crying. Biddy hauled him to his feet with more good will than gentleness.
"What seems to be the problem?" asked a genial voice. Both girls screamed, in shock, while Rix cried even harder. Biddy recovered first,
"Rix fell out of the hammock," she said
"and Biddy picked him up," added Robin.
Jem was dying to laugh. He had seen the whole thing.
"I see," he said gravely, "perhaps Rix might prefer to sleep inside."
"Nooo," said Rix slowly not wanting to miss out on any of the fun.
"All right, but you need to lie still otherwise you might fall out again," he said seriously, knowing if he relaxed he would burst out laughing.
"I will," said Rix with a gulp.
"Sleep well," said Jem as he checked on Peggy to see if she was alright, wondering how she managed to sleep through all the noise.
"Madge," said Jem when he slipped into bed, "I see what you mean about Robin. Biddy is good for her," and he explained what had happened.
"Poor Rix," laughed Madge, "he wouldn’t have known what had hit him."

Stacie laughed the next day when Robin and Biddy were telling her all about their camp.
"How did Peggy sleep through it all?" she asked in wonder.
"She doesn’t know but she wishes she had seen it," said Biddy with a chuckle. "Anyway, I’m off to Gisela’s. I promised I would help with Natalie."
She was a different person around Gisela these days. When she first met Gisela, she had been extremely shy but now she chattered away. She had adored her from the first time she had seen her. There was something so motherly about her and at times she reminded her of her own Mother.
"Do you think my brother will remember me?" she asked wistfully one day of Gisela.
"I don’t know," said Gisela honestly, "I think if he were to see you again, something in him will recognize you as someone he feels at home with, but I don’t think he would remember you."
Biddy looked slightly sad.
"I know he’s happy with his Aunty, but I would like to see him again," she said. Gisela looked thoughtful,
"Maybe you will one day," she said. "You could visit him in Italy when you’re older."
"I’d like that," said Biddy, her smile lightening her face

Joey laughed until she was nearly sick over Madge and Jem’s account of Robin’s and Biddy’s Camp.
"You should have seen her Joey, Robin gave the perfect imitation of you," chuckled Jem. "I’ve never seen Rix floored like that. He wasn’t expecting to get a shock like that."
Joey herself could see a change in Robin in the two weeks she had been away. She was still as sweet and sunshiny as ever, but she was definitely starting to become older. Part of her missed the old Robin, but another part of saw the person Robin was becoming. She was becoming more of a friend and less of the little girl to pet. Biddy’s caused this she thought half-resentfully and yet she knew Robin needed to grow up. Robin herself was feeling different; used to being younger by so many years or older by so many years, Robin loved having a companion her own age, but she did find it something to get used to. The older ones tended to make her a pet or see her as being a baby and the younger ones tended to look up to her, Biddy didn’t do either. She argued, put her point of view across, played with her, laughed and was all the things Robin had missed by not being with other girls her own age.

Grizel and Juliet had almost finished setting up the Annexe.
“I hope it’s a good term,” said Grizel, “It’ll seem strange teaching rather than being the student.”
“I know,” said Juliet. “I’m glad we’re teaching together.”
“So am I,” nodded Grizel.
No more was said for a moment until Grizel spoke.
“I kind of have an idea,” said Grizel flushing a little, “What if a few of us all club together and cover her school costs. Guides already cover her food and clothes and accommodation, if a few of us agree we could do the rest. I think Gisela might help. She is already and I know Stacie said something about wishing she could.”
“That’s not a bad idea,” pondered Juliet, “we should talk to them about it at least.” Later that day Juliet and Grizel wandered over to Gisela’s to talk the idea over with her. Gisela laughed when she heard their suggestions.
“I had thought about doing that myself,” she admitted. “Biddy is a dear little thing, and so brave with being alone in the world.”
“We thought if a few of us clubbed together,” said Grizel, “we could offer her a scholarship to cover what Guides doesn’t.”
“That may make it possible,” said Gisela. “Let us add it up.”
The three girls looked at each other in dismay.
“We’re still short,” said Grizel dismally. Even with the money Stacie said she could give out of her trust. I wish I was allowed to use some of my trust fund but father won’t let me until I’m 35. And we’re all starting out.”
“Oh well,” said Gisela with a sigh, “Maybe something will happen that can make this possible. It’s not like we can ask anyone to join us. It wouldn’t be fair.”
“I still think we should tell Madame,” said Juliet, “At least then if anything did change she would know what we’re prepared to do.”

Accordingly, Juliet, Grizel, Stacie and Gisela spoke to Madame.
"I think that’s a wonderful idea," said Madge warmly, "It’s lovely of you all to think of it, especially as you’re all just starting out."
The three girls flushed,
"Oh, but you’ve helped us so much," mumbled Grizel almost incoherently, "I’d be a pig not to help others after what you’ve done for me."
"The school has helped all of us," said Gisela gravely, "it is also our way of repaying the school."
Madge flushed at their compliments, "You don’t know how glad I am to hear you say that," she said. "I only wish Jem and I could make up the difference, but everything has been put into either the San or the school, though we could do it in a few years time, I just don’t see how we can now."
"That’s all right Madame," said Juliet hurriedly, "we just thought we’d let you know, in case something could be done about it."

School was soon resuming and Biddy getting ready happily. She was feeling more at home with the Russell and the Chalet School, though a part of her was wishing she could go to the Annexe with Robin or at least be a part of the school proper. She was also looking forward to seeing Corney, Evvy, Margia and Lonny again. She had seen Maria and Elsie a few times that summer as Maria had stayed with her sister for the past few weeks and Elsie lived on the Sonnalpe. Elsie spent most of her Summer visiting her sister in the Sannatorium. Biddy had come across her one day in tears and feeling shy she had sat beside her and arm around her not knowing what to say.
"Thanks kid," said Elsie when her tears were spent. "I know Lilias will get better, but oh it does seem a long haul for her."
"She’s your sister isn’t she," said Biddy quietly.
Elsie nodded. "I hate seeing her like this," she burst out. "I wish I could do something."
Biddy sat there in mute sympathy. Her heart ached and she wished she could help one of the girls who had helped her.
"Thanks Biddy," said Elsie after awhile, giving her a quick smile. "Thanks for helping."
Biddy’s mind was in a whirl, 'how did that help,' she wondered. 'I didn’t do anything.'

There's so much about Biddy's life that is glossed over in the books. If the school has adopted her, they should surely be responsible for her education. I always wanted more about the Bill/Biddy relationship - it is Bill she grabs when she's scared because she thinks the Linders girls are ghosts.

Grizel, Juliet and Gisela are lovely here, not to mention Stacie - actually all the characters are!

I've always wondered about the legalities of it to be honest. Who, for example had permission to take Biddy out of Austria and into the UK in 1938? And adoption seems to have been a fairly grey sort of area around that time anyway; ISTR that the whole concept was only formally legalised in 1926, and "And Jo" where Biddy first appears was written in 1931.

Biddy was so nice to Elsie here!

It was indeed lovely! But, Lesley, it is well possible that Madge and Jem, at that particular moment in time, were indeed "cash-poor" - they had invested a great deal in both the school and the San, and I'm afraid that not all the upper-middle classes had vast amounts of reserves to call on then, any more than they have today! And the school might just have had as many "free" pupils as it could carry just then, especially with the Annex about to open.

Fiona, I'm really enjoying this story - thank you so much! Lots more of it, please....

What 'free' pupils? I don't think there were any during the Tyrol days. Biddy was being housed, clothed and fed by the Chalet School already - allowing her to also be a pupil there can't have been all that different. And Madge and Jem cannot have been that hard-up - they didn't need Joey to earn her keep, they not only had a comfortable house with servants but, in a couple of years, could also buy St Scholastikas

I had thought about Madge and Jem paying but wanted to show other people being equally generous. My thought is they do later on especially when they go to England. They do offer to pay for her University fees if she doesn't get her scholarship. The other thought was Madge and Jem couldn't have much free cash if Margot had to go to work. She hadn't been well and had a two year old and this is back in the day when brothers did financially support the widows and single females of the family

"I’ll miss you," said Robin mournfully, when the holidays were drawing to a close.
"So will I. I wish I was going to the Annexe with you," said Biddy wistfully. "The only ones I know at the Chalet are all older than me and I go to a different school."
Robin nodded, "Maybe you’ll get the scholarship your hoping for," she said.
She and Biddy had discussed this at great length.
"I hope so," said Biddy with a heartfelt sigh.
"Oh well," said Robin, "at least I’ll see you at half term and we can write."
Biddy flushed. "I’ve never gotten a letter before," was all she said feeling close to tears. "Well, I’ll write if you will," she proposed.
And the two girls agreed. The girls returned to their school. Biddy found a letter waiting for her from the Robin. It didn’t say much only how fun the holidays were and good luck for her plans for a scholarship. Jo grinned when she saw it. Robin had asked if she could deliver it for her. Biddy was also excited to catch up with her mentors and excitedly told them Stacie’s idea for a scholarship.
"That’s not a bad idea," said Evvy and Lonny, whom she was speaking with. Evvy was turning over idea in her mind.
'I wish Poppa could offer a scholarship here,' she thought. But she knew it was something she could never ask. An indulgent father in everything, Evvy couldn’t imagine her father reaction if asked to pay for another girls fees. It was a pity in a way because Mr Lannis would have done it. He was an extraordinarily generous man. Evvy made up her mind that one day she would help another girl to be able to come here for free. It also made her determined to help Biddy as much as possible.

Hope that they're able to meet Biddy's costs without making her feel in any way that she's being a burden.

I'm sure Mr Lannis would have paid if Evvy had explained to him that Biddy was an orphan, but it would have been awkward for everyone.

Thanks Fiona. I like Biddy - well, she is a fellow historian after all Laughing - and I've always thought it was a shame that EBD glossed over the issue of her fees etc, especially as it's something that didn't really occur with any other character.

The six girls redoubled their efforts; all except Corney. Corney had been kept down in the fourth form and she was starting work hard so that she would get a remove, spurned on by her friends who were determined she should be with them as much as possible. Biddy also tried to help her, which touched Corney.
“It doesn’t seem so bad working with you,” said Corney, “but I hate schoolwork,” she grumbled. Biddy stared at her wide-eyed,
“What do you like doing?” she asked.
“Having fun, anything but this,” was Corney’s careless reply, but she added, “I hate being left behind and I guess I should do better. I know Poppa would like me to and Evvy said it’s more fun with me in her form than not.”
“I know,” nodded Biddy. “I wish I could go to school with Robin but I doubt I’ll get a scholarship to the Annexe.”
Corney’s eyes widened at this. “Why don’t you get to know some of the girls here she encouraged. You and Robin will always be friends, sometime your closer to someone despite the distance. I have friends at home that don’t come here and we’re still good friends. It hasn’t made a bit of difference. Well,” she amended, “we haven’t stopped being friends because of it. Why don’t you get to know some of the girls you age. There’s Mary Shaw, and Alixe Von Elsen, or even Emmie Linders. I’m sure they would be friendly enough.”
“I don’t really see them so much and they’re young ladies at school,” said Biddy doubtfully.
Corney hid a grin, “You will be soon if you get this scholarship,” she observed. Biddy wriggled uncomfortably. “I-I-I,” she stammered,
“That’s all right, you’ll make friends soon enough,” soothed Corney, “and you’ve always got us. Don’t you forget that,” she instructed.
Biddy smiled shyly, pleased and bent her head over her work.

Biddy worked hard and one day her hard work was rewarded.
“Miss Wilson,” said Luise, one of the maids. “Fraulein Bartels is here to see you.” “Thank you Luise,” said Miss Wilson looking puzzled. Who is Fraulein Bartels she wondered. Oh the village school teacher she realized when Fraulein Bartels entered the room.
“Please sit down,” invited Miss Wilson.
“Miss Wilson,” said Fraulein Bartels coming directly to the point, “I need to speak to you about Bridget O’Ryan.”
“I hope she hasn’t caused any problems?” asked Nell Wilson quickly.
“Yes and no,” replied Fraulein Bartels slowly. “She is very well behaved child.” “Good,” smiled Miss Wilson, “then what is the problem?” She asked cordially.
“I don’t think our school can offer her much more than what it has,” said Fraulein Bartels simply.
“I teach children who mainly become cowherds, or maids. Rarely do I have a child who will do much more than that. In fact I have taught every single maid at this school. I grew up in this area and my teacher knew I could do more than become a maid and at great personal cost, my parents ensured I became a teacher.”
Miss Wilson’s eyebrows raised at this. “That would have been very difficult for your parents,” she said softly.
“It was,” nodded Fraulein Bartels. “However, my Father wanted more for his children, than what he had had. Like my teacher before me, I can see the potential in Bridget and think she will need more education than what she will ever receive in our little school. We just don’t have the funding for it,” Fraulein Bartels announced. “I went to Innsbruck to finish my education and fortunately was able to stay with family there.”
“Fraulein Bartels thank you for bringing this to my attention,” said Miss Wilson, “I will see what I can do.”
“Thank you,” smiled Fraulein Bartels. “Bridget is a very bright child and I will be sorry to lose her.”

Nell Wilson sat at her desk thinking for awhile. She stood up and made her way to Mademoiselle and gave her the entire story and added.
“I know I could help a little with the costs of Biddy’s education she added but I can’t cover it all.”
Mademoiselle smiled. “Nell,” she said gently, “it is very good of you to offer. I’m sure it would please you to know that three other people connected with the school, have made similar offers.”
“They have,” said Nell sitting upright. “Who?”
Mademoiselle smiled, “Gisela Mensch, Stacie Benson Juliet Carrick and Grizel Cochrane. Each of them wanted to do it as a way of thanking both Madame and the school.”
“That so generous of them,” said Nell stunned, “all of them are just starting out and Stacie is still in school.”
“I know,” said Mademoiselle, “Stacie is using some of her inheritance money. Neither Madame nor I were able to manage as we both have family we’re already educating, though we may certainly be able to help in another few years or so. With what you have offered, then there will be enough to cover this years school fees.” Nell flushed. “I’m glad, she said, “But what do we tell Biddy.”
Mademoiselle smiled. “We say that her teacher has said she has a lot of potential to go further with her education and as such we feel we are able to offer her a scholarship here. Neither Gisela, or Stacie, or Juliet, or Grizel wish Biddy to know it came from them and I will leave it up to you if you wish her to know about your part.”
“No,” said Miss Wilson thoughtfully. “She should be free to enjoy her time here without feeling she owes me anything. It can all be done through you and Madame.” Mademoiselle smiled. “As you wish,” she replied gently. “I will talk to Madame and discuss this with her and I think Biddy can start at the school at half term.”
“Dollie will be relieved about one thing,” observed Nell, “At least it will mean that Biddy won’t have to walk to school in the snow. Well, I’ll leave you to break the news to Biddy.”
“Thank you Nell,” said Mademoiselle softly, “It is very generous of you.”
“It’s the least I can do,” replied Nell lightly

Mademoiselle smiled. “Nell,” she said gently, “it is very good of you to offer. I’m sure it would please you to know that three other people connected with the school, have made similar offers.”
“They have,” said Nell sitting upright. “Who?”
Mademoiselle smiled, “Gisela Mensch, Stacie Benson Juliet Carrick and Grizel Cochrane.

Shouldn't that be four, Fiona? Wink

Lovely episode - Nell is wonderful.

Just caught up with several pages of this. It's so sweet and lovely. I especially liked the little ones camping out in the garden and the growing-up of the Robin. Thank you Fiona.

Mademoiselle discussed the situation with Madge. Juliet, Gisela, Stacie and Grizel had all agreed it could go ahead and paid the first term’s fees at once.
“Biddy may I speak to you in my study,” she said after Abendessen. Biddy looked nervous at the thought of seeing the Head.
“Biddy,” said Mademoiselle gently when Biddy came to see her. “Your teacher at school thinks you are doing extremely well and believes you would benefit from further education, with that in mind the school had decided to offer you a scholarship here.”
“Me,” said Biddy stunned, feeling close to tears. “
You like that my pet?”
“Oh yes,” said Biddy with shinning eyes. “I’ve always wanted to come here. I’m glad said Biddy a little unsteadily.
Mademoiselle smiled understandingly. “You begin at half term and you will still make your home with the Russell’s for your holidays. Now I’m sure your tutors will want to know your news.”
“Thanks Mademoiselle. I’ll try to make you proud,” said Biddy unevenly before giving the regulation curtsey and speeding off.
“Well done Biddy,” said Evvy, Margia, Lonny, Elsie, Corney and Maria admiringly when Biddy came and told the others her good news, “That’s great news.”
“Thanks for all your help,” said Biddy shyly, “and if there is anything I can do to help you, just let me know.”
Biddy left to write to Robin, Stacie and Juliet, thanking them for their help and to let them know she had been given a scholarship at the school and how excited she was. “Read this Grizel,” said Juliet handing a letter.
“Thanks for all your help,” read Grizel, “I’ve have just been told I have a scholarship at the Chalet School.” Grizel started laughing, “I take it she’s pleased then,” she twinkled.
Robin was thrilled and wrote back straight away full of ideas and plans. Her final words were, I’m so glad you got your dream of becoming a Chalet School girl. That’s great. And so Biddy joined the Chalet School.

Thank you Fiona, it's so good to read more about Biddy, she's one of my favourite characters. It's really nice that Evvy, Corney and everyone carried on looking after her, the scene with Elsie crying was so sweet.
