#1: Baby Lois - Drabble challenge Author: JenniferG, Location: DurhamPosted: Thu Jun 15, 2006 10:16 am I've never had a writing muse strike me before, but Mia's drabble challenge evidently did the trick! Hope it's all right. "A scene EBD should have written": someone should have given Joey a bit of a shake for tactless comments once or twice, in my opinion! I've included a bit from "Coming of Age" for context.
“Hilary wants all of you to go along and see her so that she can show off the baby to you. It isn't everyone," he added cheerfully, "that has a ten-pounder to exhibit!"
"That's what I thought myself when Stephen arrived," Joey said detachedly.
"What-was he a ten-pound baby?"
"Ten-and-a-quarter, to be strictly accurate. (…) So don't you go getting swelled head, for I've beaten Hilary in every way, still."
-The Coming of Age of the Chalet School
Phil looked at her in exasperation, trying to control his rising temper. He was weary from lack of sleep and the strains of the past few days – while both Lois and Hilary were recovered and ready to receive visitors now, Hilary had had a difficult time of it. At one point it had seemed that Phil might be about to lose both wife and daughter, and all this woman was concerned about was that she’d “beaten” Hilary in some absurd way! She seemed to be able to breeze through life without considering anyone else’s difficulties, how could he get through to her?
“This isn’t a game, Joey,” he eventually managed to say gently. “We’re all fearfully glad that our darling Lois is here at last, why should we not be? Because you had one bigger?
“I might have lost them both, Joey. You and Hilary have been friends for years, is the size of our children really of more concern to you than Hilary’s health?”
Joey looked taken aback. “I, I’m, I didn’t…” she faltered. “I… how is Hilary?”
“They’re both all right - now.” he said, and moved on.
Joey was rather more subdued for a while.
