She says she will not sing.

I do not understand girls. Not at all. I never have and never will. You would think that the longer I teach them the more I would understand them, but I do not. The little maid with the silvery voice for example. She is completely beyond my comprehension. She refuses to sing because the music and words were written by a German. She says it is unpatriotic. Music does not recognise borders and flags. It does not fight wars. It transcends all languages to speak to the inner heart, to the soul.

But she says she will not sing because it was written by a German. Two Germans who lived long before this war or the one before came to be. Who know nothing of the world we live in now, but who left us this carol, the words telling us of the bringer of Peace, the music translating the message to a medium all can understand.

I know she loves music. That she is blessed with the gift to give and receive joy from it. By denying this she is denying herself, she is denying what she has, denying who she is, denying her reason for being.

She nods gravely when this is explained to her, she is not short on understanding, this little maid, but still she will not sing.

She says she will not sing because she has said she will not sing. How does one explain to this child that music is the gift of the gods to be shared by all, regardless of nationality? How does one make her understand that by closing this door she is depriving herself of beauty that cannot be expressed in any other way? How does one tell her that her pride asks too great a price? A price that one day she may regret. How does one persuade this girl-child, this woman in the making, that one cannot judge the work of one man by the acts of another?

The other girls sing. They do not refuse, they do not object. Why this one? Why the one to whom singing is so important? But nobody can persuade her. I only hope that somebody will help her. That somebody will speak the right words to reach her mind and her heart. That somebody will uproot her pride, her prejudice, before it deforms her character. Who can do it I know not. I can only pray.

~~~
O Jesulein suss, O Jesulein mild,
Hilf dass wir thun All’s was du will’st
Was unser ist, ist Alles dein,
Ach, lass uns dir befohlen sein,
O Jesulein süss, O Jesulein mild.
Mr Denny heard the silvery voice soaring and was filled with joy and contentment. She had sung.
One can see the understanding - and also the frustration, togther with the realization of how much Verity is hurting herself.
It was very interesting to see Plato's side of that story - you made it seem very real and likely.
Thank you Santa.
