Well, after the roaring success ( Wink ) of the La Rochelle disucssions, I hope you are more prepared to discuss the Lost Staircase! Personally, I enjoyed it and it was nice to find out what the actual story was after it was hinted at by Jesanne and Lois in the CS series I thought Ambrose was such a sweetie and I adored the dogs - especially Beowulf - I only wish I could train my dog to such exacting standards!!

I also enjoyed it as it gave us the background behind the characters, I also enjoyed the 2 Janie books for the same reason.

Feel that I want to add something as this is the only non-CS EBD that I have read. However, other than that I enjoyed it, I'm not feeling very inspired.

I liked this too. It gives more character to girls that really only get a passing mention in the CS books. You get a good impression of the house and lifestyle, though you do have to suspend belief a little more than usual when it comes to the staircase itself!!!

I enjoyed this book, more for it's descriptions of life in Dragon House, and for the chance to meet Jesanne than for the actual story of the Lost Staircase itself. What does puzzle me is the geography of the house itself. Spoiler for those who haven't read the book and want to (though I think it is already hard to get hold of). Jesannes suite is stated as being in the south wing. The staircase is clearly at some part of the main wing, since that was the only part of the house that was built at the time. So how does Tommy kitten fall into iot having left Jesannes window? It must be right underneath, because the men are running up and down on ladders between her window and the staircase when they do find it. Also, where do all the creepers etc that are covering it hang from? Finally, how were the stairs supported? Did they just ignore gravity and stick out, or were they built up solidly from underneath? In which case how did they deal with the two upper floors that existed at the time? Despite my questions, I loved the part where they were finding all the different items within the staircase. That worked with the Journall in giving a sense of life to relatively ancient history. And just on a random note, I heard a reporter on the radio the other day, called Sanchia! It startled me a bit, since I'd never heard the name before reading this bokk, and it hasd developed canine associations.

I enjoyed it it was the first (of 2) non-CS EDB books. My books have been inaccesibly stashed around my parents for about 12 years, so it's probably been longer since I read it. Now, I have them back so will have to read it will noe-pad & graph-paper next to me before I can comment on Miriam's remarks about the layout. I'm still waiting for my daddy to spoil me like Sir Ambrose does when he realises what a nice girl Jesanne is.Rachael said

I think you need to have special EDB powers to train dogs like hers! Smile

I really like this one. In a way it reminds me of blyton-esque adventure stories but I liked getting the story after it is mentioned briefly in CS and its nice knowing the history of Louis and Jesanne.
