I've got a tiny germ of an idea, but need some clarification before I get any more carried away with my own imagination! Which book does the School move to Switzerland in? Do we have a rough idea of how many girls went with them?

Also, would the Welsh branch have recruited more pupils to fill up the gaps in the higher forms? I'm sure they wouldn't have had a problem restocking the lower forms, but realistically, how many people want to join a new school at 15 or 16? Especially as the School never seems to be very oversubscribed- they always seem to be able to squeeze extra needy cases in!

Thanks Very Happy

Moves to Switzerland in Barbara, only taking those of 12 and above (except for the Maynard Triplets who are special) Numbers down drastically - from 300 to 100 according to Lesley (one of Mary Lou's Gang, I hasten to add, not me! Wink )

Hope that's of help!

My initial impression was that the Welsh branch was supposed to be a mainly junior branch, with small senior forms, with the expectation that many of the girls would go to Switzerland at about age 14 or 15 if their parents didn't want them abroad before that.

However, aside from Primrose Trevoase, the Dawbarn twins, Gwen Jones, Doris Hill and Kitten Lucy, I don't think there are any other students who transfer from one school to the next. The two branches seem to be totally independent in later years - a domestic branch, presumably with mainly UK students, and a self sufficient Swiss branch with a very international student body and everything from kindergarten to a finishing branch.

I would guess that the Swiss branch would hold some free spots for San related students - i.e. girls who had a parent or relative who was being treated for TB and needed to come to the school at short notice.

I'd hate to be one of the fifth or sixth formers left behind, though. Most of the senior students seem to go to the new school, so they would be in very small classes, with most of the senior mistresses having left for the Swiss branch. If they wanted to recruit to bring their numbers up they'd have to hire all new teachers for the senior subjects, plus a new matron and PT mistress and art and senior music mistresses. *And* they'd have to do without Miss Denny Shocked

I think we hear about those, possibily because EBD remembered she'd left them behind to come later (or someone reminded her), but other girls from the English branch we've not got to know, so she doesn't bother bringing them across and introducing them.

It's a shame - it'd be interesting to see if over the years things diverged between the two branches and what differences there might be for a girl moving from the Welsh to the Swiss branch. Or perhaps a continental girl whose parents decide they'd like her to have some education in the UK sending her from Switzerland to Carnbach!
