Is the name of Jack's family home in the New Forest,

Pretty Maids or Merry Maids?

I can't remember which.

And when did he give it to the National trust?

Many Thanks for any help on this

Phil

It was called both at different times in the books, I think. I prefer Pretty Maids and I think it's called that more often. I *think* he gave it to the National Trust around the time of Oberland Smile

I think its normally Pretty Maids, but occasionally Merry Maids (an EBDism). I can't remember when it goes to the NT, only that it's before they go the Switzerland.

It's only called Merry Maids once in Changes, so I think Pretty Maids is right! Very Happy

Mine was a Con related one, where she visits it and explores her childhood memories.

Don't know exactly when they give it to the National Trust, but the idea is first mentioned in Changes.

Quote:
“But what about your other home?” Mdlle asked, speaking for the first time since she had greeted Jo. “You have Merry Maids near the New Forest. What, then, do you do with that?”
“Jack’s handing it over to the National Trust, lock, stock and barrel – after we’ve rescued the things we either want or ought to keep.

There is also a mention of it in Reunion and the fact that they call it Pretty Maids suggests to me that EBD did consult the early books while writing Reunion, as the last time Pretty Maids is used is Jo to the Rescue:

Quote:
Down-stairs, the old grandfather clock which had told the time for nearly three hundred years at Pretty Maids, the former Maynard home, but which had been brought to Switzerland after Jack had agreed to let the Government have the place for their own purposes, chimed six bell- chimes
