Was Jack at the San from the start? If not when did he appear?
I spy a small bunny in the distance.

I think he joined fairly early - first reference is in Head Girl I think.

According to the A-Z, Jack is first mentioned in Princess.

From Princess

Quote:

The civil wedding had taken place the day before, but there hadn't
been any guests there - only the three girls and Dr. Maynard, Miss
Maynard's brother, who had come to join Dr. Jem at the sanatorium.

Wonder if that means Jack was Jem's best man - and if so, did they know each other from before Jem came out to Austria?

So looks like it's pretty fuzzy; he could have joined Jem at the start or Jem could have started alone.
Seems unlikely there'd be just Jem though. As that fits what I want, I think he can be there from the start unless anyone finds evidence to the contrary!
Thanks guys.

He possibly applied for a job there because his sister was already teaching at the Chalet School and maybe she told him about the San and he liked the idea, but he and Jem do seem to know each other quite well. Come to that, Mollie and the Bettanys et al seem very close - Mollie takes Grizel, Joey and Robin to stay with her parents (just before Head Girl) whilst Madge and Jem are at a conference.

Joey and Co first stay with the Maynards during the Easter holidays after Jo of - whilst Madge and Mollie are having their Guide Leader training at Foxlease. So, likely the Bettanys at least would have met Jack then. I suspect he was at the San from the start - which must be somewhere before Princess - although trying to work out his age, he may not have finished his full training when he joined Jem. He is very much 'young Maynard' in Princess, not to be left on his own at the San for very long.

So, I suspect he either applied to join the San having met Jem through Mollie and the Bettanys, or Jem invited him to join the San after having met him via Mollie / Madge. Do we know when Gottfried Mensch joined them?

Caroline.

Caroline.

So he could easily have met the Bettanys by the middle/end of Jo of? That would be perfect.
(If not, there's always the option to ignore inconvenient evidence, though it doesn't seem like I'll need to, hopefully.)

Edited, minor corrections.

Not for a while! I still have my other one that I am trying to make work and it's very slow. One day I may post some, you never know. And it is very silly. I'm not sure I can write any other sort.

Somehow, it wouldn't feel right to have two on the go. I am a bit the same with reading books. Not that it stops me reading more than one, I just know it will take me longer to finish the first book if I start another)

Edited for spelling.

Jack appears in a short story - Joey Sticks Her Oar In, so I think he might have joined later. Or it is another EBDism Rolling Eyes

Hmm, was he new in that or was he an established chaaracter? I can't remember. Because he should have been an established character if he is in Princess.

There's actually quite a few EBDisms with that story - irrc, Joey's about sixteen or seventeen in it (and possibly a prefect).

I'm sure I've read something by Helen McLelland about trying to fit "Joey Sticks Her Oar" into the actual CS timeline (such as there is one!)

Ray *fuzzy*

I agree Ray - a lot of inconsistencies. I think from memory, Jack was new at the San and had received a rowing blue at Oxbridge ... and Bill was trying to show him that Joey was a good rower.
