Could anyone tell me which Chalet girls had died by the end of the series and when they died? I can only think of Luigia Di Ferrara and one of the Mercier sisters (can't remember which!), but I'm sure there's someone else. Thanks!

Didn't Jeanne le Cadoulec die at some point? Or am I getting mixed up?

Jeanne le Cadoulec died when the ship in which she was leaving Brittany sank.

Suzanne Mercier died during the war - she was thrown out of her house when she was weak after just having had a baby, and she got a cold and died of it ( Confused ).

Maureen O'Donovan was at St Scholastika's not the CS, but she died of rheumatic fever just before the war if that's any help!

There are non-specific references to the fact that quite a few of them might have died during WW2. Jo mentions in 'Joey and Co in Tyrol' that one reason the Peace League document is so precious is that may of those who signed it are now beyond their reach. Miss Annersley donates a window on the chapel those girls who were 'called to higher service'.

One of the Herbert girls was killed in a car accident. We hear about it about it some time afterwards when Con, I think, talks about it. But I'm not sure that she was ever actually a pupil, although her sisters were.

Ruth Herbert

She does appear briefly at St Briaval's, in Shocks, I think, as a mischevious middle, but is said to have been killed at age 14, before coming to Switzerland.

Thekla von Stift vanishes during hte war.

Of the mistresses, Mademoiselle LePattre, Matron Venables and Miss Bubb have died before the end of the series.

Of the girls who vanish during the war, the following are continental characters who have reasonably fleshed out roles in the Tyrol books, but who aren't heard about after the school leaves Austria.

Lisa Bernaldi, Eva von Heiling, Luigia Meracini, Luise von Rotheim, Klara Meltarni (Austrian)

Paula & Irma von Rothenfels, Cyrilla Maurus (Hungarian)

Giovanna Donati (Italian)

Lilli van Huysen (Dutch)

And if you're going with the fill-ins, (whited out to avoid spoilers) Gertrud(e) Beck(er) from Peace.
