#1: Driving Home For Christmas Author: CBB Secret Santa PostPosted: Sun Dec 18, 2005 1:33 pm

I wrote this really quickly so sorry if it's a bit disjointed but I really wanted to write a christmas drabble and didn't know when else I'd have time to. Hope you like it!
Happy Christmas! ? x

Con Maynard was driving home for Christmas. Home was the Maynard family home of Freudesheim on the Gornetz Platz. It had been nearly a year since the last time she had been home. On New Years day she had packed the new car she had been given for Christmas to drive across Europe and “find herself”.
She had travelled through Germany, France, Italy, and Austria and had even ventured into Franco’s fascist Spain. Her travels had unintentionally provided her with material for her very first novel, which was sitting proudly next to her on the passenger seat of her small car, waiting the critical opinion of her famous author Mother.
The only person she had seen who was linked to her life on the Platz was Roger. Con smiled as she thought over their meeting. It had been in a busy Rome square, when she had spotted him out of the corner of her eye. Despite the firm statements she had made that she needed time away from family and friends to be able to gain independence and become more assertive she had felt completely unable to ignore Roger’s presence. Impulsively she had run up to him and placed her hands around his eyes, before saying excitedly “Guess who!”
Roger, of course knew who it was. He had been in love with Con since he was twenty one, but had not know how Con felt about him and was to scared to ask her. A week was spent with Roger in Rome, and when Roger had gone back to his job in England Con was faced with the revelation that she loved Roger. At first the idea haunted her, what if he didn’t feel the same way? But then remembering certain looks that had been exchanged she became more used to the idea and began to have hope.
The drive home had been long and tiring, it seemed to never end. The last hour took forever before she pulled through the gates of Freudesheim and stopped her car in front of the house. Everyone had been looking out for Con and in no time at all a small army of Maynard’s and Maynard friends had descended on her.
“You’re back! You’re back!” The younger children shouted and screamed their faces full of laughter. “Have you brought us lots of nice Christmas presents?”
Con grinned, “Maybe I have and maybe I haven’t! It depends on how good you have all been!”
“There’s so much to tell you!” Her triplet sisters said in unison slipping arms around her waist. “Who’s married who, who’s been born, and then there’s all the interesting gossip to come to!”
“We’ll stay up all night tonight and exchange every bit of news we can think of.” Con promised.
“Con my dear girl,” Her Mother said capturing her daughter in a big hug. “It’s so good to have you home.”
“It’s good to be home Mamma.” Con told her hesitantly.
“What is it my darling?” Joey Maynard questioned knowing that there was something on her daughters mind.
“It’s just…” Con began, “Well I’ve written something and I think it’s quite good but I want your opinion. In fact I’m longing to know what you think. Will you look over it when you have time? Not now of course but in a few days maybe?”
Joey’s eyes had lit up with this news; she had always believed that her daughter could be a much better writer than herself. “Where is it Con? I’ll read it straight away, I’m sure that it will be excellent if modest you believes it to be quite good!”
“Are you sure? What about everything else you have to do?” Con asked anxiously.
“That does not matter now!” Joey told her, “All I want to do is read your master piece.”
Con retrieving her manuscript from the car handed it over to her mother. “I won’t go so far to say it’s a masterpiece.” She told her.
“I’ll be the judge of that!” Joey exclaimed taking it from her daughter and heading to her study.
As Con watched her Mother go into the house her eyes fell upon Roger, who was watching everyone greet her. Pushing her sisters gently away Con made her way towards Roger.
“Welcome home.” He told her as he gave her a hug.
“Thanks.” Con told him with a smile. A smile which told him everything.
“Merry Christmas Con.” Roger told her with such meaning in his eyes that everything fell into place for Con, and to herself she thought “This is going to be the best Christmas ever!”

Thanks, Secret Santa. That was such a lovely drabble for Alison. I'm glad Joey is being so encouraging and Con and Roger have realised they feel the same about each other.
