Is anybody actually taking any notice of these, or am I being sad and typing to myself?? Oh well, here goes anyway!Having read this, I do feel sorry for Heather at being taken away from her school, but I also agree fully with her parent's concerns and reasons for doing so, and if I were ever in the same position (ha!) I would probably do the same. Heather's reaction of going off into monumental sulks is so typical of a teenager. EBD got it right this time! I do love hte classic EBDism in this chapter though. It is meant to be a three hours trip from the school to their home, they leave around 12 noon, stop somewhere for lunch at 1.30pm and still don't get home until 5.00pm!!!! I'm just glad my 3 hour stints at work don't last that long *grins*I actually like the way that Heather's "transformation" doesn't take place overnight. it begins gradually on Guernsey, mainly as Heather wants to be friends with Janie and Co and follows their example, then is almost forced into carrying on as she encounters Cressida Shakespeare and her superiority (sp?). The other Shakespeare girls seem like pleasant, ordinary girls and I do wonder how they managed that with Cressie at the helm! The finding of the secret passage, while pure EBD is also fun. I do wonder why Cressie doesn't get more into trouble for not allowing Hero to phone. I would hit the roof if I'd been Mrs or Major R. But hey, I'm obviously not an EBD perfect parent, lol! I found the part of the storyline with Alured Saxon (who must have the crowning glory of EBD names!) quite sad, especially as he "died fighting", I must admit though that I thought it a rather pointless part of the plot - apart from there being a man around to help the girls catch the burglars. No offence ot any ill people, but from the sound of his state of health, he was probably in a lot less of a fit state to be fighting anybody that a trio of fit and active girls were! All in all I did enjoy this book. I think this one and Seven Scamps are my favourites of the La Rochelles. I would defintely recommend this series to anybody who hasnt' read it yet.

I'm only posting so you don't feel lonely, Lulie Rolling Eyes Not really! I haven't read them but promise myself a treat some day so it's interesting to read a review. I must admit the Seven Scamps made we think we were reviewing Enid Blyton. It doesn't sound terribly EBDish.

I'm taking notice Lulie, and I enjoy reading the views on these books. But I'm afraid I haven't read any of the ones we've done so far besides Gerry. I wish I had *sigh*.

Ditto, I've only got access to the transcripts on Raya's site at the moment. So La Rochelle is a bit of a mystery at the moment :dontknow: JackieJ

This is the first of the La Rochelles that I've got, but I haven't read it for quite a while So saying I really did enjoy it, although I felt that Alured was introduced purely so he could die and EBD could make the point that death is just going to paradise and he's quite happy now (cynical moi Wink ) As Lulie says Heather's reformation is very believable especially as it doesn't happen quite overnight (unlike Juliet Carrick etc) Cressida would have been enough to drive me to murder rather than the excessice politeness that Heather uses with her. Miss Christopher (the governess) is lovely - although I can't help feeling that she must have the patience of a saint as well as wonderful organistaional abilities. I wonder if EBD was portraying the ideal (as she saw it) rather than the reality of her own experience.
