Post subject:  The Transformation of Jack Lambert - Part 2

As the previous part is now at 25 pages, I thought I'd start a new thread.

Chris came back with Jack's wine and sat down in the chair opposite her. "Go on," he urged her. "Open it."
"You first," she said, passing the gifts she had given him across to him.
Chris opened the first gift carefully, peeling back the sellotape and finally removing the paper. "Brilliant, thanks," he exclaimed, seeing the record she had bought him. "I've been wanting this for ages. Now it's your turn."
Nervously Jack peeled off the sellotape and unwrapped the little velvet covered box. She lifted the lid and gasped as she discovered what he had bought her.
"Well?" he asked, grinning at her. "Do you like it?"
"It's fabulous," she told him truthfully. She carefully lifted out the delicate silver chain so that she could examine the charm hanging from it more closely. It was a perfect little car, beautifully made and very detailed, and Jack could not stop grinning at him. "I absolutely love it," she told him. "Thank you so much, Chris."
Chris grinned back at her, glad that he had followed his instincts and bought it for her. He could not remember ever seeing her wearing any jewellery, but he felt that she would feel more comfortable wearing something silver than something gold. "Here, let me help you," he said, getting up and taking the chain from her hands. He fastened it carefully around her neck and smiled down at her. "I'm glad you like it," he told her. At that moment the doorbell rang and Chris stepped away from her. "I expect that's my parents," he said as he went to answer it.
Jack watched nervously as Chris' parents came into the living room. His mother was tall and slender and very much older than she had expected, with white hair and the same warm, brown eyes that Chris had. Chris' father was just an inch or two taller than his wife, and much stouter. He was balding and had one of the kindest faces that Jack had seen.
"Hello," Chris' mother said, advancing on Jack with her hands held out. "You must be Jack! I'm Millie, and this is Chris' father, Oliver. It's lovely to meet you at last!"
Expecting to shake hands, Jack reached out her hand, but instead was gathered into a big hug. "It's nice to meet you, too," she replied, rather taken aback by this greeting.
Chris' mother released her and Jack waited nervously to see how his father would greet her. He grinned at her, but seemed content to shake her hand. "What do you think of the Cobra?" he asked her.
"It's fabulous," she answered enthusiastically.
"I'll take you for a spin in it if you like," Oliver told her.
"I've already said I'll do that," said Chris at once. "You did say that I could."
"That was until I saw what a pretty girl she is," replied his father. "From all you said, I thought she'd be plain and manly, but she's definitely not."
Jack glared at Chris, wondering exactly what he had told his family about her. Obviously it was nothing flattering, and she resolved to give him a piece of her mind later on.
"I said nothing of the sort!" Chris exclaimed. "I told you that she's lovely."
"Oliver didn't believe you," Millie explained. "Well, as you are obviously going to have one of your boring discussions about cars, I will go and see what is happening to the dinner. Jack, I imagine you're able to do more than feign interest in their discussions, but if you get fed up with them, do tell them to shut up."
Jack, who had no problems with discussing the magnificent car out on the drive, grinned at Millie. "I'm sure it won't come to that," she said.

Glad Jack liked Chris's present. I wonder who will take her for a spin! It seems both chris and his dad are as mad about cars as Jack is.

Hope Jack can show Millie that she is able be have a conversation with her about things other than cars as well.

The Christmas lunch served by Chris' mother was excellent, and as they chatted, Jack found herself liking his parents more and more. When they had finished eating, Jack and Chris did the clearing up and then they all enjoyed a cup of coffee and some of the chocolate mints that Millie had brought with her. Finally, Chris told Jack that they should go for a spin in the Cobra.
Eagerly Jack pulled on her jacket and once Chris had promised that he would be very careful with the car, they ran down the steps and got into the lovely blue automobile.
"It's a fabulous car, isn't it?" said Chris happily as he started the engine.
"Absolutely," Jack agreed, equally delighted by the vehicle.
He backed off the drive and soon they were flying along the deserted streets, enjoying the purring of the engine and the wind in their hair.
"I love the way that everyone looks at us," Jack laughed, as a pair of teenaged boys pointed excitedly at the car.
"That's what my parents like," said Chris. "They enjoy being noticed."
Eventually they decided that they should return to Chris' place, or his parents might be annoyed to find that they preferred to spend their day cruising around in the car rather than socialising with them. By the time they reached Chris' house, though, Oliver was sound asleep on the settee and Millie was dozing in an armchair while the Queen made her Christmas speech. Closing the living room door quietly, Chris caught Jack's hand and pulled her into the kitchen.
"Let's leave them to sleep," he said. "Shall we have a cup of tea?"
"That would be nice," she told him. "I do feel thirsty." She sat down at the kitchen table, which was spotlessly clean in honour of Millie and Oliver's visit, and watched as Chris made a big pot of tea.
"What are you doing for New Year?" Chris asked as he sat down opposite her.
"I thought we were going to the party at the theatre, with Jane and David?" said Jack. They had not definitely agreed, but she had assumed that they would, once Jane had mentioned it.
Chris tried not to plan too far ahead where Jack was concerned, so he had not considered the arrangement anything more than a possibility. "My parents are having a New Year party," he told her. "They usually invite a few friends and my brother will be there. Mum said that she'd love it if you could come as well."
"I would love it if you could come as well."
Jack looked up as Millie appeared in the kitchen, pulling out a chair and joining them at the table. "Your father's snoring woke me up," she complained, pouring herself a cup of tea. "So will we see you on New Year's Eve, Jack?" she asked. "We have plenty of room, so you could stay the night to save driving all this way back after the party."
"Thank you," said Jack. "I'd love to come."
"Good," said Chris. "Now, who wants some Christmas cake?"

This was supposed to be the start of the second part of this; about a year and a half has passed since Renata's wedding.

It was a lovely sunny afternoon in August and Jack and Chris were sitting in the park enjoying a picnic. They had spent the morning in the National Portrait Gallery and had enjoyed looking at all the paintings there, but as both were essentially outdoors people they were glad to leave the gallery and head off to the park. It was lovely there, surrounded by flowers, a slight breeze alleviating the heat of the day, and the hum of the bees and the birdsong to serenade them. They had bought meat pies to eat, and were washing them down with a can of beer. As Jack stretched herself more comfortably on the slightly brown grass, she wondered if she had ever been as happy as she was now. She and Chris still got on like a house on fire, and she liked his parents very much. She had finally introduced him to her parents, and to her relief they had welcomed him gladly into their home and told her afterwards how much they liked him. He had visited Anne and John several times now, and when arrangements for family events were being made, everyone now invited 'Jack and Chris' as opposed to Jack on her own.
"Would it be considered indecent if I were to go to sleep here?" Jack wondered, finishing her pie and lying out full length on the grass.
"Judging by those people over there, no," Chris answered, gesturing towards a trio of young men who were sprawling on the grass in attitudes that suggested they were sound asleep.
Jack closed her eyes and sighed contentedly. "It's been a lovely day," she said happily. "I almost don't mind not going to work when we have such fun."
"We can always have fun like this," said Chris seriously and Jack felt him take her hand. She was used to his displays of affection now, and never even thought of pulling her hand away as she would once have done.
"So what shall we do tomorrow?" she enquired, for they had taken a whole week off work, deciding to enjoy themselves in and around London rather than going away with their respective families or other friends.
"Jack," he said, and something in his tone made her open her eyes.
"What?" she asked.
"I've been wondering," he said hesitantly.
"About what?" she asked curiously.
"Well, we have had a good time together," he continued. "And it's been great spending all this time together. I was just thinking that we could spend more time together if we...well, if you...I mean..."
Jack sat up abruptly. It was not like Chris to be so inarticulate. "What on earth have you been thinking about?" she asked.
"Getting married," he said with a rather sheepish grin. "Jack, you must know how I feel about you. I've never been as happy as I am when I'm with you. Will you marry me?"

Oh, with my usual lack of thought, I'd not considered that they might have a problem with their work if they married. If this is set in the early '70s, would they have a problem?

Jack was rather taken aback by his words. She knew that she could not imagine her day to day life without Chris, but it was very difficult to think of them living together, to imagine waking up at his side in the morning and getting his breakfast before going off to work with him. They would always be together, and that was rather a frightening thought. She would not be able to go into the bedroom and close the door in order to have some time on her own, because it would be his bedroom as well. And yet when they were together she seldom felt the need to get away from him, she realised. They could sit together in a companionable silence, reading or listening to music, and often when she was alone she missed him.
"What?" he asked, as she continued to stare at him.
"It's a funny thing," she said solemnly. "Getting married to someone and being with them all the time."
"It's not that funny," he answered, dying to laugh at her serious face. "Lots of people think it's quite a good idea."
"But I'm not ready to get married yet."
"We don't have to get married yet," he told her, encouraged by the evident thought she was giving the subject. She had not replied in the negative, so there was still hope for him. "I thought we could be engaged for a year, or two years if that makes you more comfortable. We'll need time to arrange everything, so we wouldn't be able to get married straight away."
"Hmm," said Jack thoughtfully. "Do you think we'd like being married?"
"Yes, I think we would," he answered honestly. "We are good friends and we share a lot of interests. We've got to know one another very well and we get along well pretty much all of the time. And I'm absolutely crazy about you."
"Yes, I am about you, too," she said, sounding surprised. "Do you know, I think you are right. Yes, Chris, let's get engaged!"

Once they had finished their leisurely lunch, they decided to go shopping for an engagement ring. Chris had not bought one, fearing that Jack might not agree at once, and having little clue as to what kind of ring she would like if she did accept his proposal. They wandered along the busy street, looking in the window of each jeweller's shop they passed, and Jack found that the more she looked at the glittery rings the more she wanted to own one of them. Her initial thought had been that they were all far too gaudy, but she soon realised that though there were some that were rather impractical for everyday wear, there were also some that were really lovely.
"What about that one?" Chris had listened to all Jack's comments - and they had been many and varied - and on noticing a ring in which the diamond was set into the slender gold band he thought he might have found just the thing.
"At the back?" she asked, and then she said, "Oh, in the third tray? Yes, I can see it. It's beautiful!"
"Come on, let's go and try it on." Grabbing Jack's hand before she could change her mind, Chris pulled her into the shop and soon he was slipping the ring onto her finger. "It's not going to get in your way," he said, looking at her hand from all angles. "It's so well set that it hardly sticks out at all."
"It is lovely," she agreed, thinking how different her hand looked with the ring adorning it.
"Then we'll have it," he said, noticing how her eyes were shining. "Happy?" he asked in a whisper.
"Very," she told him, dropping her eyes and blushing. It felt odd to be discussing such a personal thing as happiness over a new engagement in front of a shopfull of people.
Chris bought the ring and Jack almost said she did not want it when she discovered how much it cost. He ignored her nudges and whispered protests, though, and soon they were leaving the shop, the little box safely in Chris' pocket.

Chris and Jack headed away from the main shopping area once they had bought the ring, and they went into a quiet wine bar. Chris chose a table in the corner of the room, behind a flourishing pot plant, and once the waitress had brought the bottle of champagne that he ordered, he drew the little box out of his pocket. Jack watched spellbound as he opened it and lifted out the ring. It looked just as lovely as it had in the shop, and as he took her hand in his she felt her heart skip a beat. He slid the ring onto her finger and then looked up, his eyes meeting hers. "I love you," he mouthed, knowing that she would probably have kicked his shins if he had uttered the words aloud in such a public place.
Jack squeezed his hand. It was the first time he had ever told her that, and although it was an embarrassing thing to do in the middle of a wine bar, Jack was unable to stop herself from grinning foolishly and saying, "I love you, too."
Still holding her hand, Chris raised his glass. "To us," he said holding it out to her.
She tapped her glass against his. "To us," she repeated. "Chris, thank you. This feels so right."
"Yes, it does," he agreed happily.
They drank their champagne and then decided to celebrate in style with a candlelit dinner in a really nice restaurant. Jack protested that they were not really dressed for such a place, so Chris took her back to her flat and gave her half an hour to transform herself into a suitable looking woman while he nipped home and put on a suit. Jack, who might be able to dress well now, was still not one for taking her time over her toilette. Within twenty of her allotted minutes she was attired in a simply cut summer dress and strappy sandals and was even wearing lipstick. She went into the living room to await Chris' return and it was there that Jane found her when she returned home a few minutes later.
"I thought you were on holiday," she said, surprised to find Jack at home.
"Oh, we're going out for a nice dinner," Jack explained, and then, to Jane's surprise, she blushed. "Look!" she instructed, holding out her left hand.
"Jack!" shrieked Jane. "Oh Jack! Darling!" She gave Jack a hug and then took her hand and examined the glittering ring on her friend's finger. "It's absolutely divine!" she declared. "I'm so happy for you! Did he go down on one knee? Was it terribly romantic?"
"We were in the park," Jack told her. "We were lounging around on the grass, so he couldn't really go down on one knee. Yes, I thought it was romantic, but you probably wouldn't have done."
"As your idea of romance is an afternoon spent under the bonnet of your car, I probably wouldn't," Jane agreed hugging Jack again. "But really I'm delighted for you both. That sounds like Chris. Go and enjoy your romantic dinner and I'll see you when you get home. You can fill me in on all the details then."
"All right," Jack agreed as she dashed off to meet Chris.

Jack and Chris were in no hurry to get married. Chris could not wait for the day he stood at the top of the church and watched Jack walk down the aisle towards him, but there was no point in rushing her. If he was patient she would come around to the idea of marriage just as she had to the idea of a relationship with him in the first place. And he knew that Jack was worth waiting for. She was so perfect for him that he could not even begin to imagine what his life would be like without her. So he continued to spend as much time with her as their jobs allowed and let her suggest the wedding date and introduce the discussions about the ceremony and the reception and everything. He was sure he wanted a traditional wedding, and was rather relieved when she announced her intention of looking for a conventional wedding dress. He had had a few nightmares in which Jack had wanted to get married in a registry office after work, with them both wearing jeans and although he assured himself that she was now far more feminine than he had ever thought she could be, he could not help but wonder if she would want such a start to their married life.
When Jack asked her to come and help her choose a wedding dress, Jane was thrilled. She made a few phone calls and discovered the best bridal shops around and then the two of them spent one Saturday checking out the shops and the dresses available. Jack gamely tried on a variety of dresses, most of which she declared she would not be seen dead in, and it took five visits to the shops for her to find a very simply cut dress which would be absolutely perfect for the big day. She was disgruntled when Jane told her that she could not walk down the aisle in such a lovely dress with her head bare, and reluctantly began the search for a suitable veil. Once they had bought the shoes, Jack thought that she was all set for the wedding, but then Jane informed her that she would need a going away outfit and some decent underwear, too. On top of that she would need an alluring negligee to wear on her wedding night, some new clothes to wear on the honeymoon and lots of new make-up and perfume, too. And then she could start to think about the bridesmaids dresses...

By the time they had finished the planning for the wedding, Jack was so eager to get the marriage over and done with and to get off on her honeymoon for a rest, she almost considered telling Chris that they should just elope and have done with it all. She knew that he was looking forward to it, though, and he had worked just as hard as she, writing invitations, phoning catering companies and booking the reception and the honeymoon and doing countless other little jobs to help her out. The weekend before the wedding Chris was taken out by the guys at work for his stag night. Jack was miffed that she could not go; Jane had arranged a girlie party for her but Jack knew that she would enjoy a rowdy evening with the boys more than a demure gathering of ladies. In the end it was not nearly as bad as she had feared, though. Anne came, and so did Renata and Wanda, and Jane had manged to get a number of other friends to show up. The icing on the cake, however, was the arrival of Len Entwhistle, Jack's mentor from her school days, and once she had heard that Len would be attending the wedding, too, Jack was resigned to her girlie night in.
They drank champagne from long, slender glasses, ate delicious canapés that Jane had ordered from a caterer used by the theatre for closing night parties, and talked and laughed through the evening. Most of her friends brought wedding gifts, and Jack opened them delightedly. Chris had lived in his house for years, and had a kitchen full of essentials, but she was thrilled to have some things that were theirs, not just his.
"Although I'm not sure you will know what to do with half of these things," said Renata with a chuckle.
"I can use a toaster," Jack giggled, "and I shall invite Jane round when I need to use anything else."
"I shall come around and teach you how to use everything else," Jane promised, refilling Jack's glass again. "Drink up, darling, there are plenty more bottles in the fridge."
Most of the guests left well after midnight, by which time Jack was more than a little tipsy, but Wanda, who was not flying back home until the next morning, was to stay the night with Jack and Jane. The three girls changed and got ready for bed and then gathered in Jane's bedroom, sitting on the bed in a way that would have brought the wrath of Matron down on their heads had she known about it.
"I hope you'll be really happy, Jack dear," said Wanda, guessing that they would not have much chance of talking to Jack on her wedding day.
"She will be," said Jane confidently. "He's perfect for her, Wanda."
"It's a match made in heaven," Jack said with a giggle.
"Well, a match made in the garage," Jane amended, almost falling off the bed as Jack clobbered her with the pillow.
"Even if she is a bit drunk she's handy with a pillow," Wanda said, grabbing Jane's arm and hauling her back up onto the bed. "Pax, Jack. I have to be up early tomorrow, so I think I'd better get some sleep."
"Come on, then. You're in my bed, Van, and you can have my alarm clock to wake yourself up with."
"Won't you wake up with me, Jack?"
"Of course I will," Jack agreed, although she guessed that she would have quite a headache the next morning. Wanda was an old friend, though, and she certainly would not be allowed to leave without breakfast and a lift to the airport. "Night Jane."
"Night darling," Jane responded, climbing into bed. "Turn off the light will you, please?"
Having done as she asked, Jack showed Wanda where she was to sleep and then headed off to the settee, where she was soon slumbering peacefully.

The following week flew past and almost before she knew it, Jack was sitting with Jane in their kitchen on the eve of her wedding day.
"I just can't believe it," she said as she sat at the table, her chin resting in her hands. "Tomorrow I'm going to get married. And, what's more, I'm actually quite looking forward to it."
"And so you should be!" Jane exclaimed. "You have a gorgeous dress and you will look simply beautiful. You are marrying a really great guy, who absolutely adores you, and you're going to be really happy. What is there not to look forward to?"
"Being grown up and responsible," Jack said seriously.
"You already are grown up and responsible," Jane told her with equal seriousness.
"Yes, but only on the outside," said Jack with a grin.
"You know that's not true," said Jane, trying to ignore the fact that Jack looked very little changed from her school days, despite the elegantly curling hair and the clean, shapely nails she now sported. "You've turned out far better than I thought you would when we first met."
Jack turned scarlet; thoughts of her earliest dealings with Jane were very embarrassing to say the least.
"Don't look like that, darling," said Jane, patting Jack's shoulder. "You know we agreed to forget all that. I just mean that you were such a tomboy. Now you are a much more rounded person and you are more than ready to become someone's wife. Besides which, Chris is well aware of what he's getting himself into. He won't expect his socks to be darned or his dinner cooked, he'll just be annoyed if you forget to change the light bulbs and wash the car."
Jack laughed. "I know. It's just it all seems so...so..."
"Responsible. Yes, you said."
"And we'll have to think about things like children." Jack dropped her eyes, embarrassed to mention the thing that was worrying her the most. "What on earth will I do when we have children?"
"Oh Jack!" Jane did her best not to laugh. "You can talk about that with Chris. But you like Anne's daughters, don't you? And you got on well with Wanda's Marie, too."
"Yes," Jack agreed dubiously. She could not imagine feeling maternal about a baby, though, and had visions of herself struggling to change nappies and forgetting where she had put the baby when she wanted to go out. "Thank you for everything Jane. You have been so wonderful to me, helping me get ready for this wedding and just making me...well...nicer."
"You already were nice on the inside," Jane assured her, gathering Jack into her arms and hugging her. "I just helped you sort out the exterior."
"And thank you for that," Jack went on, returning the hug with unusual emotion. "Here, this is for you." She pulled a little box from her dressing gown pocket and pressed it into Jane's hand.
"Darling, you shouldn't have!" Jane exclaimed.
"I wanted to," Jack told her, sitting down again so that she could watch Jane open the little box.
Jane gasped as she saw the pretty necklace that Jack had given her, a delicate silver chain with a glittering blue stone in the shape of a raindrop hanging from it. "It's beautiful," she said softly. "Thank you Jack. Oh, darling, I am going to miss you so much!"
"I'll miss you, too," said Jack, "but you'll always be welcome to come and visit us. We'll still be best friends, Jane."
"I know we will," Jane agreed, wiping a tear from her eye. "Things'll change, not for the worse of course, they'll just be different." Jane warmly kissed Jack on both cheeks. "I think we'd better go to bed," she said, trying to sound practical. "Imagine if we overslept in the morning!"
"That would be a disaster," Jack said as she stood up. "See you tomorrow."

SLOC retired from the day job over 13 years ago, and though he still does a bit of bookselling, he's home during the week [most of the time] whereas my p/time job is 4 weekdays so I'm around weekends if he's away at a bookfair in the day...so he's doing a goodly chuink at the moment - and what's more - he does the shopping :D :D - properly, too - he makes lists and buys bargains and thinks of what to cook with what he's bought :smug: :smug:

I'm sorry I've left you all wearing your hats for so long; here's a little more that I hope will inspire me to continue this.

Jack and Jane were up early the next morning; the wedding was to be at eleven o'clock, so they had to make sure that Jack was ready to leave the flat by quarter to. Her father-in-law to be was coming to drive them to the church in a Bristol 401 that he had recently aquired and it was there that they would meet up with Jack's parents and Anne's daughters, who were to be the other bridesmaids.
A friend of Jane's came round to do Jack's hair and attend to her make up and by the time that Oliver arrived Jack had been well and truly transformed into a blushing bride. She could not remember ever wearing so much make up before, and spent the whole time worrying as Jane's friend seemed to slather more and more stuff onto her face. When she looked at herself in the mirror, though, she was staggered to see how natural it all looked. Her complexion was flawless, her eyes subtly enhanced and her lips delicately pink. "I still look like me!" she exclaimed, beaming at Jane. "I was worried," she admitted. "It felt as though I was getting every tube and bottle and pot from the whole collection on me and that I'd end up having to scrape it off with a knife!"
Jane giggled. "You said you wanted a natural look," she reminded her. "As if I'd let you get married looking anything other than perfect."
Jack emerged from her bedroom and found Oliver waiting in the hall. "Hello," she said, and then she laughed as he turned to look at her and ended up gaping at the vision she made.
"Jack, you look exquisite," he told her once he had recovered his breath. "Not that I expected anything less, of course."
"Thank you," she said, suddenly realising how comfortable she felt in the long white gown, the lacy veil perched on her beautifully curled hair and her feet in dainty white sandals. She had not imagined that she would enjoy dressing up, yet here she was, more splendidly attired than at any other time in her life, eager to go off to the church and receive admiring looks and compliments from her family and friends. "Come on," she said impatiently. "I don't want to be fashionably late, I just want to go and get married."

I have been reading back over this, and can't find Chris' surname anywhere. Can anyone remember what it was, or if I actually gave him one? And I also noticed that his mother changed her name, so I've been back and let her keep the same name throughout - I hope, anyhow! Sorry to keep losing the plot in such a pathetic way.

When they reached the church, Jack leapt out of the car, catching her foot in her long skirts and almost tripping. Oliver, who had got out at the same time, managed to catch her, thereby saving her from inelegantly measuring her length on the path outside the church.
"Calm down darling!" Jane exclaimed, bending to brush some specks of dust from the hem of the wedding gown. "He's going to wait as long as he has to for you."
"He'd wait forever," Oliver put in, patting Jack's shoulder. "Slow down, lassie. It would be a shame if you ruined your dress before he's seen it. And even worse if you twisted your ankle and had to be wheeled down the aisle."
Knowing that they were both right, Jack stopped fidgeting and let Jane arrange her dress and veil, then she walked sedately towards the church from which her father was just emerging. He beamed delightedly at the sight of her; Jack knew that he was very happy to be giving her away and that he was already very fond of Chris. She slipped her hand through his arm and beamed back at him.
"You look beautiful," he told her, a note of surprise in his voice. "I'm so happy for you, Jack."
"Thank you," she said, knowing he was speaking sincerely. "Now can we stop nattering and get into the church?"
Jane marshalled Liza and Ellie into place behind Jack and they processed sedately up the aisle. Jack had intended to look around the church to see who was there, but as she started up the aisle she saw Chris at the top of the church and her eyes met his and she could not look anywhere else. The admiration in his gaze made her heart beat faster and she had to fight the urge to pelt up the aisle and throw herself into his arms.
Eventually she arrived at his side, and her father was passing her hand to him and they were repeating their vows and turning to walk out of the church as husband and wife.

I know I've been awful at updating this; however, my bunnies seem to be reappearing, so here's a little more.

Outisde the church they posed for an endless series of photographs, but for once Jack did not mind. She knew that she looked lovely, and she was clinging to the arm of her new husband; why on earth would she not want to have hundreds of photos taken? After all, she would need something to remind her of this day, as it was passing so quickly and she felt that there might be some important details that she would be unable to remember later without the pictures to jog her memory.
After the photos had been taken to the photographer's satisfaction, Chris led Jack down the path and they climbed into the car amidst a positive storm of confetti and rice and good wishes. Chris closed the door and they waved as they were driven away from the church and onto the reception.
"You look lovely!" Chris told her.
"I can't believe we've done it!" Jack exclaimed at the same moment.
They both laughed and Jack felt happier than she had ever believed possible. They were husband and wife now, but nothing had changed; Chris was still her best friend and they would continue to enjoy one another's company. Not that she would have admitted that she was worried that marriage would change anything between them, but it was good to know for sure that everything would still be as perfect as it had been over the previous months. It would have been too dreadful for words if the easy friendship she had enjoyed with Chris had vanished in the haze of married bliss.
"I'm so happy," she told him, snuggling contentedly into his arms.
"I'd noticed," he replied, smiling down into her radiant face, his own happiness as complete as hers.
"Do you really think I look nice?"
"You look amazing," he said with simple sincerity. "I knew that you'd look...how can I put this without offending you?...beautiful...but I never dreamed that you could be so utterly perfect. Even after all the shopping and whispering and giggling that you and Jane have done, I still wondered if you'd turn up in your jeans and t-shirt!"
Jack elbowed him none too gently in the ribs. "I promised that I wouldn't wear jeans!" she protested, causing her new father-in-law, who was in the driving seat, to snort with laughter.
"I know," he agreed, catching hold of her hands and holding them firmly. "You are so much better than even my wildest dreams, Jack. And now we're at the reception. If I let you go, will you be nice to me?"
"I'll try," she promised with a smile, knowing that he truly meant what he had said about the way she looked.
"Come on then." He opened the door and helped her out onto the path, then they walked into the reception, where they found all of their family and friends waiting for them.

The reception was as wonderful as the wedding had been. The food was excellent, the speeches as witty and entertaining as anyone could have wished them to be, the dancing was enormous fun and everyone had a great time. Jack found, again, that the time flew past; before she knew it, she was being hustled up to her parents' room where Jane and Anne helped her to change out of her wedding finery and into her going away outfit. As they would be flying, Jack had refused to wear a skirt, but the grey trouser suit she wore was nothing like her usual style of trousers. She looked stylish and poised as she sat before the mirror to brush out her hair, and Jane and Anne could not stop chuckling.
"I never thought I'd see the day," Anne remarked with a giggle. "Jack, you look so elegant and ladylike!"
"You look beautiful," Jane added unnecessarily. "I hope you intend to keep this more feminine look now that you've got your man!"
Jack blushed furiously. "If I didn't know how disappointed Chris would be, I'd change into a pair of overalls just to shut you two up," she retorted, before chortling herself. "As for being ladylike, well, we'll see. I am going to try to wear a skirt now and again, but you'll still have to help me with my shopping, Jane."
"You know I will," said Jane, suddenly serious. "Now we'd better go, otherwise Chris'll be worried that you won't get away on time. Just imagine if you missed the flight."
"I don't want that," Jack agreed, flinging the brush into her open handbag and throwing her arms around Anne and Jane. "Thank you both so much. I'll see you in a fortnight."
"Enjoy yourself," Anne said, returning the unexpected hug.
"You'll have a brilliant time," Jane told her as Jack broke away from them both and seized her handbag and suitcase. "Are you sure you've got everything?"
Jack nodded, striding purposefully towards the door. "Come on, slowcoaches. I have to go."
They followed Jack downstairs and found Chris waiting in the foyer of the hotel, with Jack's parents and his own. He had been glancing impatiently at his watch and the slightly anxious look he had been wearing faded as his new wife approached. Oliver took the suitcase from Jack's hand and headed outside to put it in the boot of his car. Jack and Chris bade fond farewells to everyone and then hurried out into the car park. To their embarrassment, someone had decorated Oliver's car with signs advertising their newly-wed status and a whole string of tin cans, not to mention some balloons and a big posy of flowers on the bonnet. So that they would not disappoint the wedding guests, Jack and Chris climbed into the back of the car and with much cheering and sounding of the horn, they were driven away to the airport.
