Having just read Althea this idea popped into my head. It's based on a very short conversation between Hilda and Rosalie about taking on an assistant for Rosalie for the Christmas term.....

"Exactly how many applicants has there been for the post," asked Joey inquisitively whilst pouring out a cup of tea.

"There were quite a lot, but we've shortlisted ten for interviews," replied Nell from the sofa.

Joey glanced over at Rosalie who was sitting quietly with her hands folded.
"And Rosalie, are you going to be in the interviews with Hilda and Nell?" she asked her old friend with a smile.

Rosalie raised her head and looked over at Hilda and Nell. "I shall," she announced with a grin which brought laughter from her friends. "I'm looking forward to some help. I'm not getting any younger..."

"Nonsense!" exclaimed Joey.

"I'm not getting any younger," Rosalie continued "And with the school expanding we really need the help. I've been snowed under the past couple of years and have very little time for myself."

"Very well, but I'll hear no more about getting old," Joey declared which again brought chuckles from her friends. "Are there any Old Girls going to be interviewed?"

"Yes, Clare Kennedy will be interviewed, but she is the only Old Girl," Nell informed her. "The rest are English, and there's also two foreigners: a French and a Swiss."

Joey nodded her head. "Clare seems the obvious choice to me. Hopefully her secretarial course was up to scratch!"

"Well, we'll soon find out," Nell replied helping herself to a biscuit.

Nell is the foreigner here not the Swiss applicant. Wondering if any are male.

Perish the thought  . It would be good to see Rosalie with a handsome young man to assist her rather than some boring Old Girl, though  .

"Oh, what rotten luck! I would love to have had another Old Girl working with us," Joey sighed.

"Well, it can't be helped I'm afraid. Mrs Kennedy needs help around the house, especially the operation so soon," Nell informed her.

The two heads of the school had just received the news earlier that morning that their first choice for the role of assistant secretary would now not be able to leave the family home in Ireland as her mother was due to have an operation.

"I do hope it's not a serious operation," Rosalie put it.

Nell shook her head. "It's not serious, but Mrs Kennedy won't be mobile for a good few months yet."

There was a short pause before Joey spoke again. "This of course means we'll have a new member of staff in September. Which of the other applicants will you choose?"

Nell chuckled and looked over to Hilda. "Well, it certainly won't be Miss Green. She certainly had the language and secretarial qualifications," in reply to Joey's amused expression. "But unfortunately her overall tone was rather informal. Everything was 'love' and 'duck' and her accent was rather broad to say the least!"

"Yes, I must admit that I sometimes had difficulty in underatnding her," Hilda added. "Which was a shame because to was very friendly and warm but I'm afraid we couldn't have foreign parents calling the school and not being able to understand our secretary!"

"Of the others, most of them didn't meet out language standards. They spoke French and German but not to the fluency we need," Nell continued.

"Then what decision have you made? Is there going to be an assistant?" asked a curious Joey.

Rosalie cleared her throat. "I can tell you that we will have a new secretarial assistant. She is arriving on Tuesday, which allow time for training before school starts."

"But what's her name? Where is she from? How old is she?" Joey the question mark continued.

**********

Gloria Bruni arrived on Tuesday morning at 10am. She had travelled from her family home in Ticino the previous day, stopping over night in Interlaken before heading up to the Chalet School that morning. She was young and petite, only 20 years old, with black curls that reached her shoulders and round black rimmed spectacles.

Miss Annersley greeted her new member of staff with a smile. "Good morning Gloria, welcome to the Chalet School."

Good to see more of this. Pity about Mrs Kennedy, but glad they picked a Swiss candidate.

Am glad they aren't going for an old girl. It'll be nice seeing someone of a different nationality at the school. Thanks Laura
