For those who can remember this before it got eaten (both off here and my computer) please don't spoil the surprise for anyone new to it. I think most of the shocks had been revealed last time but I want to finish it so I have to start again Thanks Simone slit open the letter from Julie Lucy with an antique letter opener, which had been part of her husband’s inheritance. The note thanked her for the recent pictures of Pierre, and detailed how she had given one to his biological paternal grandmother, where it now took pride of place next to the only photograph she had of her late son. Knowledge that part of Jean lived on, even if she was not directly involved in his life had helped the fisherwoman move on and start living again. Simone looked across to her toddler son who was pushing a toy boat around the floor, considering they lived so far from the sea he had a keen interest in all things nautical, her friend Joey Maynard had teased her about signing him up for the Navy when older, stating the only boy she had known that fascinated was her own Mike. Folding the letter back up she spoke to her husband ‘What time are you leaving to pick Tessa up, cherie? I thought it may be nice for us all to go together and we could go to a patisserie for a treat on the way home.’ Tessa had just started her final term at a convent school in Paris, some 30 miles away. At present she returned home each weekend but would soon attend her mother’s old school in Switzerland, only returning home during holidays. ‘Andre, Andre are you listening to me?’ Simone touched her husband on the arm, suddenly afraid by the pallor of his skin ‘What is wrong? Has something happened, it’s not Tessa is it?’ The letter he was holding fluttered to the floor, Simone glanced briefly at it, not recognosing the round, girlish handwriting on it. ‘Simone, I think I need to tell you something’ |

Intrigued Simone rang the bell and when Odette answered she passed Pierre over to the maid to look after before sitting down opposite her husband. Andre, a deep red flushing his cheeks, could not quite meet her eyes. ‘Simone, you know that I love you and would never mean to hurt you but…. I’m so SO sorry.’ ‘What have you done?’ Simone’s tones were remincient of those she had used to naughty middles when she had been mathematics mistress at the Chalet School. Her fingers curled tightly around the handle of her coffee cup. ‘It was only once, I swear. I shouldn’t have done it but I had been drinking when we met. It was in Paris, the night before Henri’s wedding. I knew she had feelings for me when she was younger, but I thought that was a childish crush and I didn’t see her again after that time she stayed with us. I betrayed you, I’m so sorry. Can you forgive me?’ The cogs were turning in Simone’s head, Henri, Andre’s accountant, had not married recently, a thought occurred to her and with words of ice she asked slowly ‘Why are you telling me now? If you’ve kept it a secret and LIED to me for the past eight months why make a clean breast of it now?’ ‘She… she’s pregnant’ Andre hesitently admitted before ducking from the coffee cup Simone flung at his head.
