Post subject:  CHALLENGE: Naming of sports

Today we have naming of sports. First
We have coasting over snow And then
There will be skiing over powder, but first,
First we will have naming of sports. The sun
sparkles on the ice crystals, outside on the mountain,
And today we will have naming of sports.

These are your ski tips, which are kept apart
By holding your feet straight in the snow. And please do not let me
See anyone crossing her toes, you can stop it quite easy
If you have sufficient strength in your ankles. The pine tree
Under the snow forms a shadow, never letting anyone see
Any of them crossing their toes.

This is the left-hand steering rope, and this
Is the right-hand steering rope, whose use you will see
When you get on your sled. And this is the brake,
Which in your case, you have not got. Her screams
Break the silence, of the clear mountain air,
Which in our case we have not got.

And this you can see is the senior. The purpose of this
Is to stop the middle, as you see. She can slide herself
Rapidly up the slope of the mountain: we call this
Saving the day. And up the slope of the mountain
The tree standing by the run halts the arc of the flying bodies:
And she lies there still and grey.

Such a sad poem but it gets in your head and stays there.

Interesting version (I only know this through a parody version by John Lloyd Williams which isn't as good!). Will read the original, now.

That was just amazing. I love Henry Reed - his 'Judging Distances' is in its own way, as good as 'Naming'.

Thanks Cat C :D

There are further parodies, and other information about the poet, on this site if anyone's interested.

I would have liked to copy the structure more exactly, but it didn't quite work out - I may see if I can re-work it at some point.
