Post subject:  Moving With The Times (updated 25/09 p.2)

This has been sitting on my PC for ages so I figured if I put it up, and got some comments that might inspire me to write some more...

"I say chaps, what do you think of all this palaver then? Do you think the kids have the right idea?" asked a girl with red streaks through her otherwise plain brown hair.

"Well you can hardly blame them can you? The staff live in the 19th century most of the time, and its about time they realised it!" chipped in another of the girls, whose long black tresses were the envy of most of the other girls.

The others looked thoughtful at this, they all appreciated Sadies point of view as she was the only one of the prefects, and in fact one of the few in the school, who did not have any previous connections with it.

"Well its hardly their fault, it's really the Smith-inator, i dont imagine half of the others, really want to spend their saturday nights supervising us lot doing boring dances and paper games."

None of the others had really thought of this before, and they turned to the girl who had said this with interest. It was none other than Seffy Russell, youngest grandchild of Lady Russell the founder of their school.

This had perhaps been one of the contributing factors in the rebellious nature that Seffy had shown throughout her first five years of school. She had only really calmed down in this her last year at the school.

"If they wanted off of it that bad they would have done something by now" pointed out Sadie.

It was Lil cravens turn to talk now.

"Even Mum is getting fed up with it, she thinks i go extra wild in the holidays 'cos i'm so pent up here!" there were grins at this, Lils mother, philippa, was famous in the school as the only Maynard who had ever gotten expelled from the school.

"Well talking 'bout it isn't going to change anything" Reese, the current headgirl, heaved a sigh, "though it would be fun if we could stage a bit of a revolution don't you think?"

"Can you imagine if we actually got to meet boys..." said another of their midst dreamily.

"As if!" Reese quickly squashed this hope, "no point dreaming about what's never going to happen!"

At this point two more girls entered the already crowded room, that the grandees of the school called their own.

One of them was instantly hailed by the girls, she was immediately recognisable with her bright blues eyes and cheeky smile, not to mention the bright pink that was her hair. She was known to all and sundry as Smee, though the reason for this was not actually known.

"Smee! What took you so long? We were missing your pink locks in assembly earlier." Reese exclaimed.

Smee, who's real name was Alexandra (though few people knew this) also bore the distinction that not only had her older sister been head girl, but also her mother and grandmother (once known as Bride Bettany). She had however been more than happy for Reese to be head girl, for she had never particuliarly loved responsibility herself.

Smee cleared her throat, "Guys! This is Jean Mctavish, she's joining our lot this year" she turned to Jean, "Jean you said you knew Sinead?"

Jean nodded at this.

"Anyone know what class Sinead is likely to be in this year?" asked Smee to the room.

"Lower Sixth" supplied someone.

"Ta muchly!" she turned to the shy new girl, "Do you want to go see her now, or shall I introduce you to all these ugly mugs first?"

The 'Ugly mugs' yelled loudly at this, till Reese bellowed at them to shut up. Reese turned to Jean kindly.

"Well obviously you know our one and only Smee here, but the rest of us are Seffy, Sadie, Em, Sue, Jackie, Lil, and myself Reese."

The others all smiled at her genially.

It was Seffy who spoke first

"Do you have any connection with the school? Don't worry if you don't cos you'll be more of a novelty then." she finished with a laugh.

Em, of the red-streaked hair chipped in, "Seffy was pretty much born in the school! and some of us others aren't much better."

Jean looked at them slightly bewildered, but she summoned up her courage to speak.

"Well it had to be arranged for me and my sister to come away to school, and Gran got to make the decision cos dad is awfully busy with work and stuff, and she chose here cos she went here when she was a kid. She wanted to send her own girls here but she had four sons so that didn't exactly work."

"Well who is she then?" asked Sue curiously, her parents were divorced so her mum was forced to work around the clock. Meaning, she had mostly been brought up by her own grandparents, and her Gran had been at the school from almost the very beginning so she tended to know more than most about the history of the school.

"Kathie Mctavish" replied Jean more confidently.

Sue screwed up her face, trying to think.

"I have no idea" admitted Lil eventually, "I can't think of anyone by that name- we could go look at the honours boards though later if you like?"

"Wait!" said Jean going red, "I s'ppose you'll want her maiden name rather than her married one?"

"Idiot! said Smee jokingly, "Well what's the maiden name then?"

"Gordon"

"Kathie Gordon" said Sue thinking.

"I've heard of her!" said Sadie surprisingly.

The girls looked at her surprised, how would Sadie know?

"She was an ace tennis player, she went on to play at Wimbledon!"

The others looked suitably impressed.

"I say, that's rather cool Jean! and trust you Sadie, to know about the famous sportswomen of the school!"

Sadie grinned complacently.

"But is this such an awful school?" asked Jean worriedly

"Oh no, its not half bad" exclaimed Reese

But I thought.." she stammered

"Its just a bit... well... old school I suppose" supplied someone. “pardon the pun!”

"We might as well be living in Victorian times" translated Smee

"Well at least we aren't in Switzerland!" conceded Em.

The Swiss branch was notorious for 'being posh'. They all longed for the English branch which was rumoured to be more modern and up to date.

"Yeah, but we aren't at Carnbach" pointed out Jackie, her first words of the evening.

"Ah yes, but it's like a big, happy family here!" said Smee in her best cheesy voice.

Tirol, was old-girl central. Somehow pupils with connections with the school always seemed to end up at this branch.

As Madge Russell had once said, back almost 30 years when she had reinstated the school in Tirol. "It's every chalet girls dream to be back here, where it all began..."

Reese laughed.

"Well most of us only have another two terms here, so we might as well just stick it for another couple of months."

There was sense in what she said, but Seffy was loathe to give up her hopes of modern life.

"Well we only have two more terms, so lets get jiggy with it, and give this school something to really remember us by!"

"Ye! Instead of remembering the legends, lets make some of our own!"

Reese grinned. "Well I suppose i cant really go against all of you. so iIm in. But only if you promise to never say 'lets get jiggy with it' again Seffy!"

"Cheers" laughed Sue.

Lil grinned at Jean, "Poor you Jean. You seem to have come just in time for a mad revolution!"

Reese took control swiftly.

"Lil you are vaguely sensible..."

This again brought shouts from the others, not least Lil herself.

"Now I sound like the really boring one." complained Lil.

"If you would let me finish!" exclaimed Reese.

Okay I am being inspired

Lil scrutinised her toes carefully, making sure the bright red she had painted them was not smudged. Then with a fierce blow to try and dry them off she sat up. She, along with some of the other prefects was sitting under a big shady tree, at the far end of a magnificently flowered field. In the distance was the glimmer and sparkle of the lake.

She looked at the girls sitting around her, bored.

One of them was leaned up against the tree idly flicking through a glossy magazine. Another, was lying a little away from the tree, out of the shade, with as much of her body showing as possible, without her looking completely indecent. She rolled over a moment later, so that, to quote her, she would be evenly baked all over.

"Sadie if you don't cover up a bit you'll have someone on us like a shot." she pointed out.

Reese looked up from the gossip magazine she was reading. "I don't see anyone. But you will burn if you don't come into the shade a bit Sadie."

"Some head girl you are." said Lil.

"Like you care" pointed out Reese, "and it's not like she is about to fall into a ravine or something!"

The last of their group, Seffy Russell, pulled up at this moment.

"Juice anyone?" she asked, a two litre plastic bottle of coke swinging from one hand.

"I'll take some" said Sadie sitting up, "I'm parched."

"No wonder! It must be hard lying there trying to get skin cancer." said Seffy sarcastically, but nonetheless she passed over the bottle she had just bought.

"Where are the others?" she asked.

With a final blow on her toe nails Lil replied, "They are off being Prefectly somewhere..." she drawled.

"Stupid buggers" said Seffy unsympathetically.

"It's our turn tomorrow" pointed out Reese, closing over her magazine.

"I don't understand how you can read that" said Lil wrinkling her nose.

"What? Because it's trashy or because it's in German?" asked Sadie, determined to make a dig at someone else for a change.

"Both" said Lil.

"That's how I can speak good German." said Reese somewhat primly.

"I wouldn't have thought that 'tart', 'boob job' and 'WAG' were necessarily considered good German, but i'll take your word for it." said Seffy taking a swig from the bottle of Coca-cola.

"I don't suppose John from the shop would have minded you talking about them to him" said Sadie giggling.

Seffy went crimson. "As if" was all she said however, as the others giggled at her discomfort.

Some more...

"I suppose if we are on duty, we might as well do something vaguely useful." said Reese resignedly.

Seffy unfurled the paper fan she had just made, and started fanning herself vigorously.

"And what do you suggest, your majesty?" she asked.

"I think you need your highlights re-done Reese" interrupted Sadie somewhat randomly.

"Do you think so?" asked the head girl, momentarily distracted, as she swivelled round to look in the big mirror which hung in the room.

"who cares" said Lil, "actually I do think they need done again, you are awfully dark on top. But the point is we are meant to be out there" here she made a wild gesture towards the window "in five minutes."

"I always have to wonder why you weren't made head Lil, you are so unbearably sensible" complained Sadie, "no offence to you Reese!"

“I think its Lil you are offending actually” said Reese mildly.

“Your grand plan please?” asked Seffy boredly whilst she watched Lil stick her middle finger up at Sadie.

“Okay, Sadie man the tennis courts and make sure nobody steals any tennis balls or rackets, and keep an eye on the basketball court will you? For some reason it seems to be our fault in the Head's eye if the place gets graffitied.” here Reese sighed, “Lil if you watch the bike and boat sheds, make sure people take helmets, life jackets and the like and hopefully your presence will keep the smokers away. Seffy and I will walk around the premises and keep the hounds away”

“If Seffy is there they will come running.”

“Especially John” chimed in Sadie with a wicked wink.

“No wonder, with the length of skirt she wears” said Reese rolling her eyes.

“It's no shorter than yours Reese Campbell!” retorted Seffy.

“No but Reese doesn't have your gorgeous ass” said a voice from the doorway.

“Smee! What crazy are you talking now?” called Reese.

“Oh it's a quote” said Smee, “Sorry Seff, I don't swing that way I'm afraid.”

Here there were giggles from the others.

“Me and Jackie were down at the shop and we heard those local lads talking, you know that gang that beat up your John Seff? Well anyway they were calmly having a conversation comparing our asses and cleavage. Seffy dear you one the Ass Award hands down, Reese and Jackie were tied for Best Boobs.”

There was silence in the room as the girls digested this.

“I feel like something out of one of Reese's stupid magazines” said Lil, looking offended.

Smee just giggled, “Oh no need to feel aggrieved because you weren't in the running Lil, you were the girl they would most like to shag!”

Lil's mouth fell open.

Reese was torn in between laughing at the ridiculousness, and feeling very very annoyed.

“Hey Reese! Calm down.” said Seffy warningly. “You saw what they did to John they could do a hell of a lot worse to you.”

“Doesn't it make you angry?” asked Reese bristling.

“Yes” said Lil, who was secretly kind of flattered by the attention.

"You saw John, I was already angry with them for that, and not because I fancy him 'cos I don't! This is degrading and disgusting, but there isn't anything we can do about it." said Seffy

Finally a wee update.

"So Seffy, what are you going to do?" pressed Sadie, twiddling her newly highlighted hair.

The other prefects turned with interest to Seffy. Love troubles were far more interesting than assigning Prep nights.

"I don't know." fumed Seffy, "I don't even fancy him!"

Reese rolled her eyes.

"What do you think?" asked Lil waving her newly painted nails.

"I don't understand how you do french manicures." said Smee wistfully. "I can never do anything like patterns" ,her own nails were luminous pink, an only slightly brighter shade than her hair.

"So why are you going to all the trouble?" asked Reese.

"Trouble..." said Lil looking around wildly. "I'm not..."

"What is it?" asked Sadie immediately on the scent of gossip.

"I've got a date" she mumbled incoherently.

"A date!" squealed Jackie.

"Is that how you are going to do your hair?" from Sadie.

"Who is it?"

"Is it John?"

Reese whirled around at this.

"It's not John is it?"

"Of course not. I wouldn't" said Lil huffily.

"What's wrong with John?" asked Seffy indignantly.

"Nothing Seffy" said Reese soothingly, "Only the fact that you are head over heels in love with each other."

"I'm not." protested Seffy.

As one, the others ignored her.

"Are you really going to wear your hair like that?" repeated Sadie.

"Oh shut up girl. Who cares?" cut in Smee, "WHO is it?"

Sadie pouted. Lil blushed.

"Who is it?" asked Reese interestedly.

"Friedel." she said eventually.

"FRIEDEL MEUSELER?" shouted Reese.

"yes" murmured Lil, then more defiantly. "Yes. What's worong with that?"

"Friedel Meuseler" murmured Reese to herself.

"Friedel..." repeated Seffy uncomprehendingly.

"Ughh!" she shrieked. "Friedel, he's.. he's..."

"Yes" said Reese angrily, "Friedel is in Antonio's gang. The one that beat up John-from-the-shop, and who sold the Fourth formers weed, and who COMPARED US LIKE WE DIDN'T EVEN EXIST AND WE WERE JUST BUMS AND BOOBS."

"So Lil, how are you going to sneak out?" asked Smee, as she brushed her luscious bubblegum pink locks.

"Dunno." muttered Lil. She had never quite fitted in with the other girls, occasionally finding herself at the butt of her peers jokes, for she worked hard, and didn't have quite the same ideas as the other girls, and she often sounded bitter and cynical for her age.

She had been flattered by Friedel's offer, although she was half afraid that he was just making fun of her. But Reese's anger at her had really scared her, although she knew that Reese had no power to sway anyone, she was popular, and Lil knew she had been made head girl for a reason. She led the others, and said what she thought regardless of how popular or unpopular it would make her.

Reese had stamped down on the first signs of drugs coming into the school, despite people thinking she was a pain in the ass and fearfully up herself. When she needed to she could lead the prefects, and the school, and Lil knew that she could not compete with this girl.

She doubted Reese would voice her opinion again, or at least not in public, but she had made her views known earlier. And whatever other flaws she had Reese at least knew the difference between right and wrong. So the question really was, was Reese right?

Well this is back, after an extraordinarily long abscence, and i hope you all enjoy it. I've read the whole thing through, and realised that there are mild references to sex, drugs, alcohol and some borderline swearwords. I'm happy to leave it here, but I don't know, does anyone think it should be moved to St Mildreds?

"Well?" asked Seffy Russell indignantly.

"Well what?" was Reese's reply, as she struggled with the cork of the wine bottle.

"Oh give me that!" exclaimed Smee impatiently, "some of us have had an extremely stressful day."

A select group of the prefects had snuck downstairs after lights out and were now huddled in Reese's cubby hole of a study.

Sadie put down the ghd's she had been using, and fetched an assortment of mugs.

"Couldn't you have got some white or at least some rose Seff?" complained Sadie, "I do hate red wine."

"Well don't have any then" said Reese calmly.

"Ye" chimed in Seffy, "In case you haven't noticed none of us are eighteen yet, John was doing me a favour as it was. I wasn't exactly going to ask him to change it! Anyway I like red."

After a few sips or in some case gulps of the red wine they settled to talking again. Needless to say Sadie had a mug along with the others.

"Well Reese?" asked Seffy, repeating her earlier question. "What are you going to do about Lil?"

"What can I do?" was Reese's reply. "Unless of course you want me to go and explain the facts of life to her and make sure they use a condom?"

"Ha ha." was Seffy's sarcastic reply, "I'm serious Reese, he's a bad lot."

"Well of course he is but anything I say is hardly going to make her see that. It's more likely to make her want to go." pointed out Reese.

"Is he hot?" was Smee's question.

"What does it matter?" asked Seffy exasperated, "he's still an a**hole."

"Yes, but these things are good to know." insisted Smee.

"He's average, broad shoulders, dresses quite well, his lips look like they would be quite good to kiss, but he's got the most awful piggy eyes." said Sadie, whilst straightening her hair.

Smee held out her empty mug for a re-fill.

"I think I have an idea."

Reese groaned. "Look we can't interfere. We've gave our opinions. It's up to Lil what she does."

"But..." said Seffy

"Listen!" exclaimed Reese, "I am going to support her, and I urge you all too as well."

"But Reese!"

"Reese I thought you hated him?" questioned Sadie.

"He is dangerous, and he has no respect for anyone." agreed Reese.

"And you think a schoolgirl sneaking out at night by herself to meet him will be fine? Apart from the fact that Lil is barking for liking him, it could be dangerous Reese." said Sadie angrily.

"Don't you think I know that! If we all go along with it, she is more likely to confide in us. If we are friends to her, we can cover for her and she can sneak of during the day. If she must date the sleazebag at least it can be in Starbucks down at Spartz rather than in the pitch dark with no one around but the pair of them rolling around in the bushes."
